New DVD celebrates Haitis BiCentennial
Two films and special features highlight art and history

Haiti Rising: Celebrating the First Black Republic, an educational DVD
produced by Green Valley Media of Burlington, Vermont, is being
released to coincide with the 200th Anniversary of the Haitian
Revolution.

Haiti Rising features two award winning videos. Black Dawn is a history
of the 1804 Haitian Revolution animated by 13 of Haitis foremost
artists with narration in four languages*, and enjoyable by children
and adults. Melinda Miles of Haiti Reborn has commented, With colorful
paintings, music and folklore, Black Dawn depicts the true Haiti. It
reminds us that Haiti's story is not the story of the Haitian people,
but of all people who have struggled against great oppression. Haiti
Rising is an essential reflection for anyone who wants to honor the
200th Anniversary of the Haitian people's victory over slavery.

Haitian Pilgrimage, a Haitian American familys journey back to their
roots in central Haiti, is especially useful with teenagers and
students of comparative religions.

Special features include actor and activist Danny Glover discussing the
slave uprising that culminated in the Haitian Revolution. Glover says
that it is important to acknowledge the January 1st Anniversary because
[it] becomes a reaffirmation of our identity, an identity that strives
for independence, for self-determination for development Danny
Glover is the foremost American celebrity working on Haitis political
and social issues. He is chair of the TransAfrica Forum and
Ambassador-At-Large for Cruising into History/ Haiti 2004 Initiative.

Distribution of the DVD will center on Haitian communities and schools
in Chicago, New York City, Miami and Boston, metropolitan areas where
the majority of Haitian immigrants live, as well as art centers and
museums. Producer Robin Lloyd intends Haiti Rising for use in schools
and libraries to support the study of Haitian history and culture.
Teachers can access educational materials on the DVD for classroom
presentations. A traveling art show consisting of 10 paintings used in
the production of Black Dawn is also available.
