the real situation - plus other breaking news

NaturalNews Insider Alert
(www.NaturalNews.com<http://www.NaturalNews.com/>) email newsletter

Dear NaturalNews readers,

As of right now, the situation remains desperate in Japan, with a
confirmation coming this morning that the food near Fukushima is
now radioactive.

Efforts to cover the spent fuel rods with cooling water have failed
again and again, and now there is concern that at least one of the
fuel rod storage pools may be cracked, meaning it cannot hold water.
Thus, there's no way to cover the fuel rods no matter how much water
you pump in (and the pumps aren't even operating yet anyway...)

The official government explanations about radiation exposure in
Japan are an insult to intelligence. A few days ago, they would say
things like "The amount of radiation people are experiencing is
only equal to that of a chest X-ray."

Today with the irradiated food, they now are comparing your exposure
to "the amount of radiation you might get from a CT scan." What
they don't tell you is that a CT scan emits up to 600 times more
radiation than a chest X-ray.

What's next on this scale? Are they soon going to announce that
people are only exposed to "the same amount of radiation as a
miscalibrated mammogram?"

And folks, the radiation exposure in Japan is constant radiation,
meaning it's like getting a CT scan that just keeps scanning 24/7
(if you're close enough to the Fukushima plant). This isn't one
limited dose that turns off in two seconds, it's an ongoing radiation
avalanche that keeps coming.

The mainstream media has all but abandoned accurate reporting on
this issue, almost as if they were all ordered by the White House
to just stop talking about Fukushima (because it was scaring people).
Here's my story on that:

Breaking: French military jet opens fire in
Libya<http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-middle-east-12776418> --French
aircraft have destroyed four Libyan tanks in air strikes 19 Mar
2011 The first shots have been fired in Libya by French military
jets enforcing the no-fly zone voted for by the UN. French aircraft
are preventing forces loyal to Libyan leader Col Gaddafi from
attacking the rebel-held city of Benghazi, French President Nicolas
Sarkozy says after a meeting of world leaders in Paris.

French aircraft also flew over "all Libyan territory" on reconnaissance
missions, according to French military sources. Dutch Prime Minister
Mark Rutte tells journalists he believed British, French and Canadian
aircraft would launch the first airstrikes, a BBC correspondent
reports.

Western powers launch airstrikes on Libyan military

on Saturday to prevent Moammar Gadhafi from crushing the rebellion
in the eastern city of Benghazi. In a dramatic statement, French
president Nicolas Sarkozy announced that French airplanes were in
the air over Benghazi to prevent Gadhafis aircraft from bombarding
the city. Sarkozy said the planes would also attack tanks on the
ground if necessary to end any assault. The west will oppose any
aggression against the civilian population in Benghazi, Sarkozy
said. [Except when Israel attacks the 'civilian population' in Gaza,
or when US killer drones bomb 'civilian populations' 24/7 in Pakistan,
Afghanistan, Iraq and any other place where there's oil, gas or
opium routes to control -- then no problem! Am I the only one that
sees through this hypocritical humanitarian bullsh*t and pathetic
calls to oust dictators -- aka previous CIA assets 'going rogue,'
recipients of tons of US armaments? The US government doesn't give
a *damn* about civilians, anywhere! The US just wants oil production
to slow to a crawl so Exxon Mobil's profits can skyrocket. More
'bad economy' equals more union busting and further decimation of
the working class. --LRP]

Muammar Qaddafis promise of an immediate cease-fire, even if
implemented, falls short of the demands set by the U.S., U.K. and
France to avert allied military strikes as soon as this weekend.
President Barack Obama, speaking at the White House, described
specific demands set in coordination with U.K. Prime Minister David
Cameron and French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Qaddafi must immediately
stop attacks on civilians[and leave that task to the US/UK/France],
halt his advance on Benghazi, and pull back forces from three
embattled cities, Ajdabiya, Misrata, and Zawiyah.

frank ultimatum to Moamer Kadhafi, threatening military action if
he ignores non-negotiable demands for a ceasefire and a retreat
from rebel bastions. The US warning was immediately backed by France,
Britain and Arab nations which have driven demands for a no-fly
zone and other measures, now enshrined in a UN resolution mandating
action. The US president made dramatic and forceful on-camera demands
of Kadhafi, saying the world could not stand by because, if left
unchecked, Kadhafi would commit atrocities in which thousands would
die.

Japan Finds Contaminated Food Up to 90 Miles From Nuclear
Sites<http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/20/world/asia/20japan.html>
20 Mar 2011 The government said Saturday that it had found higher
than normal levels of radioactive materials in spinach and milk at
farms up to 90 miles away from the ravaged nuclear power plants,
the first confirmation by officials that the unfolding nuclear
crisis has affected the nations food supply. While officials played
down the immediate risks to consumers, the findings further unsettled
a nation worried about the long-term effects of the damaged nuclear
power plants.

Radioactive iodine found in Tokyo
water<http://www.presstv.ir/detail/170780.html> --Radiation above
national safety level found in spinach and milk 19 Mar 2011 As
looming nuclear crisis threatens Japan, the government says small
amounts of radioactive iodine have been detected in tap water in
Tokyo and five other areas. On Saturday, the Japanese government
said a sample of tap water from the Japanese capital contained 1.5
becquerals per kg of iodine 131, well below the 'tolerable' limit
for food and drink of 300 becquerals per kg.

normal 19 Mar 2011 Japanese authorities earlier this week issued a
recommendation that people leaving the area near a tsunami-crippled
nuclear power plant should ingest iodine, the U.N. nuclear watchdog
said on Saturday. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
also said radiation at the damaged Fukushima Daiichi plant had
stabilised at "significantly higher" levels than normal, but these
were still in a range allowing onsite recovery measures. Earlier
this week, the Vienna-based U.N. agency said Japan had provided
230,000 units of stable iodine to evacuation centres as a precautionary
measure in the nuclear emergency.

67 exposed to radiation in Fukushima prefecture following radioactive

19 Mar 2011 Up to 67 people have been exposed to radiation in
Fukushima prefecture following leaks of radioactive substances from
the troubled nuclear plant, local media reported Saturday. The
prefectural authorities detected radioactive substances on their
shoes and clothes after having conducted radiation checks on 42,440
people at 13 locations in the prefecture, said the reports.

Six workers at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant have
been exposed to radiation beyond the previous limit for an emergency
operation, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said Saturday. Kyodo News
reported the employees, whose job titles were not known, were
continuing to work despite having been exposed to more than 100
millisieverts of radiation. The Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry
raised the exposure limit to 250 millisieverts for the current
nuclear crisis.

rd7BCxMKQ> 18 Mar 2011 Radioactive fallout from Japan's crippled
nuclear plant has reached the US, with experts saying there is a
small chance it could soon reach Britain. Meanwhile, the evacuation
of Britons from the disaster-hit country gathered pace as the
situation at the dangerously overheated Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear
facility continued to deteriorate. The Nuclear Energy Agency, part
of the international Organisation for Economic Co-operation and
Development, said radiation from the plant was likely to reach
everywhere in the northern hemisphere but in extremely small
quantities.

U.S. nuclear officials suspect Japanese plant has dire
breach<http://www.latimes.com/news/nationworld/world/la-fg-japan-quake-wrapup
-20110318,0,2262753.story> 18 Mar 2011 U.S. government nuclear
experts believe a spent fuel pool at Japan's crippled Fukushima
reactor complex has a breach in the wall or floor, a situation that
creates a major obstacle to refilling the pool with cooling water
and keeping dangerous levels of radiation from escaping. That
assessment by U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission officials is based
on the sequence of events since the earthquake and information
provided by key U.S. contractors who were in the plant at the time,
said government officials familiar with the evaluation. It was
compelling evidence, they said, that the wall of the No. 4 reactor
pool has a significant hole or crack.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. said it restarted the residual-heat removal
pump at the No.

the least damaged at the facility. The utility began cooling the
pool in the reactor that contains spent fuel rods, it said in a
statement today. Temperatures in the pool had earlier fallen to
67.6 degrees Celsius from 68.8 degrees, Kyodo News reported.
Temperatures should be kept below 25 degrees Celsius, according to
international guidelines.

UN says nuclear fuel was in fire area at
reactor<http://wvgazette.com/ap/ApInternational/201103181181> 18
Mar 2011 The U.N. nuclear agency says all the fuel from a reactor
at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant in Japan was transferred
last November to the spent fuel pool where a fire broke out Tuesday.
The International Atomic Energy Agency said Wednesday the transfer
occurred when Unit 4, one of six reactors, had routine maintenance
on Nov. 30. The fire in Unit 4's fuel storage pond, an area where
used nuclear fuel is cooled, caused the release of radioactivity
into the atmosphere.

Greater Danger Lies in Spent Fuel Than in
Reactors<http://www.nytimes.com/2011/03/18/world/asia/18spent.html>
--Electric utility: 11,125 spent fuel rod assemblies were stored
at site, about four times as much radioactive material as in reactor
cores combined 18 Mar 2011 Years of procrastination in deciding on
long-term disposal of highly radioactive fuel rods from nuclear
reactors are now coming back to haunt Japanese authorities as they
try to control fires and explosions at the stricken Fukushima Daiichi
Nuclear Power Station. Japan, like the United States, has kept
ever-larger numbers of spent fuel rods in temporary storage pools
at the power plants, where they can be guarded with the same security
provided for the plants. Figures provided by Tokyo Electric Power
on Thursday show that most of the dangerous uranium at the power
plant is actually in the spent fuel rods, not the reactor cores
themselves.

Japan raises threat level for nuclear
crisis<http://abclocal.go.com/kabc/story?section=weather/earthquake_center&id
=8020376> --Japanese officials raised the severity level of the
accident because the scope of the disaster has spread beyond Japan.
18 Mar 2011 The threat level of the nuclear crisis in Japan has
increased from 4 to 5 on a 7-level international scale. The Japanese
government is now acknowledging it has been overwhelmed by the scale
of the twin disasters that hit the country, which has slowed its
response to the nuclear crisis. It's also now welcoming U.S. help
to stabilize the Fukushima Dai-ichi nuclear plant. Damage to the
facility is extensive after several explosions.

conceded on Friday that burying a crippled nuclear reactor in sand
and concrete may be the only way to prevent a catastrophic radiation
leak, the method used to seal huge leakages from Chernobyl in 1986.
Officials said they still hoped to fix a power cable to at least
two reactors to restart water pumps needed to cool overheating
nuclear fuel rods. Workers also sprayed water on the No.3 reactor,
one of the most critical of the plant's six.

in the crisis at its dangerously overheated nuclear complex, while
the UN atomic energy chief called the disaster a race against the
clock that demands global cooperation. At the stricken complex,
military fire trucks began spraying the troubled reactor units once
more with tons of water in an attempt to prevent meltdowns that
could spew dangerous levels of radiation.

message released Thursday.

Its a move that comes as the White House urged Americans to stay
at least 50 miles away from the plant, and authorized military
dependents and families of other U.S. government employees to
relocate from northeastern Japan.

earthquake activity. These include the Fukushima Daiichi reactors
at the center of Japan's nuclear crisis. Fourteen, or 3%, are in
areas of high activity. Ten of those are located within a mile of
a coastline, making them at risk for both earthquakes and tsunamis.

========= Welcome Worry-Free Nuclear Power: Rossi's Energy Catalyzer

Traditional nuclear energy uses dangerous radioactive materials as
fuel and produces hazardous waste. The solution is Cold Fusion. No
Rads - No Waste - No Problems!

[cid:2A40AB07-61E3-4E13-9A85-A156BED75CFC] Concept image by PES;

by Hank Mills<http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Hank_Mills>
Pure Energy Systems News

In recent days the dangers associated with conventional fission-based
nuclear technology have been made clear to everyone. The world has
been watching Japan's efforts to minimize the radiation released,
as multiple reactors damaged by the recent earthquake experience
partial meltdowns and explosions.

As we watch the news, our understanding of these reactors grow as
we are introduced to terms such as "containment vessel" and "cooling
pool."

However, the world also needs to understand that there is an emerging
nuclear energy technology that offers a completely safe and
economically attractive alternative. This is the Cold Fusion "E-Cat"
(Energy
Catalyzer)<http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Andrea_A._Rossi_Cold_Fusion
_Generator> technology of Italian engineer and inventor Andrea
Rossi. The principles of safety of their technology is typical of
what is found in the field of cold fusion, or Low Energy Nuclear
Reactions (LENR) in general.

Andrea Rossi has developed a safe, economically attractive, and
simple nuclear technology that holds the potential to rapidly negate
the energy crisis if quickly implemented. Instead of using uranium,
plutonium, or a combination of both (such as used in highly toxic
"MOX" nuclear fuel rods) his system simply utilizes ordinary
non-radioactive materials. By putting nano sized nickel powder in
a small container (one liter in volume), mixing it with undisclosed
(for proprietary reasons) non-radioactive catalysts, pressurizing
the container with hydrogen gas, and bringing the contents up to
approximately 450-500 degrees Celsius, he can induce nuclear fusion
and produce a large amount of energy.

No Radioactive Fuel or Waste

One critically important aspect of his technology is that no
radioactive materials are put into the system. He is simply using
common non-radioactive elements. This is vastly different from
conventional nuclear power reactors that utilize uranium or plutonium.
In addition to not being radioactive nickel and hydrogen, the fuels
used in his system are both cheap and plentiful.

The nuclear reactions occurring in his system do produce radiation
(mostly low energy gamma rays) which interacts with the materials
used in the reactor's construction to produce heat. This resulting
heat is used to warm or boil water. Unlike the massive containment
vessels needed to shield the radiation of conventional nuclear
plants, Rossi's reactor only requires two centimeters of lead
shielding. This is a far cry different from the thick iron and
several meters of concrete needed around a fission reactor!

In a conventional nuclear reactor when the uranium or plutonium
fuel is spent it remains radioactive for potentially thousands of
years. It has to be cooled in pools of constantly circulating water
for over a year until it is safe to transport to storage facilities.
This presents a potential safety and environmental hazard. In Rossi's
system only minutes after the device is turned off no radioactivity
can be detected inside of the reactor. The result is zero nuclear
waste. Not only is this a huge benefit in terms of safety, but it
is also an economic advantage of the technology. Preparing, handling,
and storing nuclear fuel rods of fission reactors is expensive due
to all the safety precautions involved. The safety precautions
involved when transporting ordinary nickel will obviously be much
less costly.

Inherent Safety of Rossi's Cold Fusion

Even in a situation such as the one that recently impacted Japan,
Rossi's system would remain safe. In the event a facility utilizing
his reactors was hit by an earthquake or natural disaster, it is
possible one or more 10 kW modules could suffer damage. Such damage
to a conventional nuclear power plant could result in a very serious
release of radiation that could present a human health hazard; and
the damaged cooling system could result in runaway meltdown. Due
to the fact that Rossi's system does not use radioactive materials
and does not produce any radioactive waste, any possible leak of
reactor contents would not represent a radiological risk. There
could potentially be a very brief spike of radioactivity for a
moment if the vessel cracked or failed, but the venting of the
hydrogen gas would immediately end the nuclear reactions taking
place and any production of radioactivity. A technician could
immediately start sweeping up any nickel powder on the floor without
risking radiation exposure.

The safety benefits of Rossi's technology are clear. However, the
potential economic benefits of the technology is equally impressive.
As previously mentioned, the fuel used by his device is cheap, but
also very little is used.

One hundred grams of nickel powder can power a 10 kW unit for a
minimum of six months. Do to the fact nickel costs less than twenty
dollars a pound (nano-nickel in bulk may cost slightly more) the
fuel cost to run these reactors is insignificant. Basically, with
one of these systems you only need to spend a few dollars on fuel
to produce an amount of energy that would normally cost a few
thousand dollars.

In addition to being safe and economical the E-Cat technology has
the potential to be mobile and portable. Producing enough energy
to power a full-scale modern car or truck is not possible with solar
or wind power. Also, it would be too dangerous to utilize conventional
nuclear fission technology in a vehicle even if a reactor could be
scaled down to that size. A single car wreck could pollute a whole
neighborhood or city with radioactive particles.

That would not be a danger if the E-Cat technology was used. Also,
the potential power density of this technology is more than high
enough to power a vehicle.

Perhaps the most fun thing about a cold fusion powered vehicle might
be the ability to go for months or years without re-fueling. Your
range could be literally tens of thousands of miles or more! When
you were not driving your car perhaps the same module could double
as an electric generator to power your home or sell back to the
electric company. If the power to weight ratio can be made high
enough, perhaps this technology could be used in aviation as well.
There might be a race to see how many times someone can circumnavigate
the globe non-stop without fueling... on nickel and hydrogen! But
given how far they could go without stopping, keeping track of them
might become more boring than watching bowling.

Ready to Replace Conventional Nuclear Power

Unlike some other potential alternative energy technologies, the
E-Cat cold fusion technology is commercial ready. It is beyond the
prototype stage and is in process of being implemented. A one
megawatt plant producing thermal energy is planned to open in Greece
the second half of October later this year. This technology is not
a "pie in the sky" possibility, but a reality that due to a lack
of mainstream media coverage is not being broadly noticed or
anticipated.

If in the coming years, existing conventional nuclear plants are
shutdown, or if plans for new plants are canceled, the E-Cat could
easily take up the slack and then some. For the cost of one
conventional nuclear power plant producing a certain quantity of
output, a facility powered by Rossi's cold fusion reactors could
produce many times the power. It would also do so safely without
the risk of a meltdown or leak of radioactivity. There would be no
special storage areas needed for spent fuel, and local residents
could live their lives without fear of accidents endangering their
families.

With all of the recent debate on nuclear energy, Andrea Rossi's
technology deserves to be noticed and recognized as a potential
game changing energy source. A clean and safe source of energy could
give concerned individuals hope for a future world without the
potential of nuclear disasters.

It is apparent that scientists at the University of Bologna in Italy
have noticed the potential of the E-Cat due to the recent successful
tests of the system performed there, and the one year research
program on the technology that recently began. They have taken this
technology seriously and are vigorously racing to fully understand
the mechanisms that allow it to work.

Hopefully, this curiosity will spread and combat the remaining (but
dwindling) skepticism around this technology some people still
express.

Embracing the Solution

If the people of the world desire an affordable, clean, and safe
alternative to conventional nuclear power they have it RIGHT NOW
with Andrea Rossi's nickel-hydrogen cold fusion technology. Worry-free
nuclear power is here, being implemented. The only questions remaining
are, "who is on board" with this emerging technology and "who will
be left behind" due to irrational skepticism or ignorance.

Fission Tragedy Could Be Averted

The communications industry pumps 25% of their revenue back into
research. The result? Slim iPhones and androids and many amazing
communications wonders.

Meanwhile, we starve energy research for funds with just 0.3% of
the energy budget going to R&D, and wring our hands over oil spills
and meltdowns.

by Rezwan Razani, Executive Director, Focus Fusion
Society<http://peswiki.com/index.php/Directory:Focus_Fusion> Adapted
for Pure Energy Systems News

I am filled with sorrow at the tragedy unfolding in Japan. In an
effort to get something constructive to come of this, I offer the
following:

The tsunami triggered an emergency at the Fukushima nuclear fission
plant, reminding everyone of the dangers of fission. Now that people
are worrying about these dangers, it's prime time to point out the
lack of energy options on our planet, the still unfulfilled promise
of fusion, and most importantly, the lack of systematic action
towards the goal of better energy options. (see - David
MacCay<http://www.withouthotair.com/>)

In the US, the energy industry as a whole spends less than 0.3% of
revenues on Research and Development, compared with an average of
3% for all other industries (an order of magnitude!), and 25% for
communication technologies.

(Data from "Post Partisan Power
Report<http://thebreakthrough.org/blog/2010/10/postpartisan_power.shtml>"
of AEI & Brookings Institute).

Imagine a world in which energy research was a priority and we kept
coming up with better, safer and cheaper energy options, as they
do in the communications sector. The energy sector seems content
to stick to old technologies and have us deal with horrible oil
spills and terrifying meltdowns. Energy advancement has a long way
to go.

Again, the amounts required are not that great: The cost of the BP
gulf oil spill last summer has reached $40Bn
(source<http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2010/nov/02/bp-oil-spill-costs-40-
billion-dollars>). In contrast, to date, the US has spent $22Bn on
fusion research over the past 50 years, (yes, fifty YEARS) (More
info<http://focusfusion.org/index.php/site/reframe/wasteful/>).
Whats wrong with this picture?

As noted, the communications industry pumps 25% of their revenue
back into research. The result? Slim iPhones and androids and many
amazing communications wonders. Meanwhile, we starve energy research
for funds, and wring our hands over oil spills and meltdowns.

Could we one day live in a world of amazing energy wonders? Could
we have a broad selection of attractive, well developed energy
options? Could there be ever more elegant, small, easily deployed
energy production units that could quickly restore power in disaster
prone areas? We have not yet begun to put our best foot forward.
Aside from the mainline fusion approaches, there are many fascinating
ideas that might blossom with reliable funding
(LPPX<http://focusfusion.org/index.php/site/category/C30/>, for
one-and many others as well).

The main message here is fund fusion, fund energy alternatives.
Rise above these collective action problems and live up to our
potential as energy creators.

also once believed radiation had little danger, putting volunteers
at risk to prove this.

Below is a list depicting the rampant use of humans as guinea pigs
in government, military, and medical experiments over the last
century. Links to reliable sources are provided to confirm the
information on each item presented. There are still today officials
in the government, military, and even business leaders who sadly
feel no need to inform us when we are used in potentially hazardous
experiments.

Note that some of these experiments specifically targeted minorities
and those in poor areas. Thankfully, this kind of unethical
experimentation is much less common now, but it continues in hidden
pockets around the globe. And large-scale experimentation with risky
technologies like genetically modified foods, nuclear power, and
nanotechnology used in consumer goods is still rarely questioned
in the media or government. By educating yourself and spreading the
word, you can help build the critical mass necessary to make a
better world for all. See the "What you can
do<http://www.wanttoknow.info/humanguineapigs#what>" box at the end
of the list for ideas on how you can make a difference.

History of Experimentation on Human Guinea Pigs

1932 to 1972 - In the infamous Tuskegee syphilis study, 200 black
men diagnosed with syphilis are never told of their illness, are
denied treatment.

They are used as human guinea pigs in order to follow the progression
and symptoms of the disease. They all subsequently die from syphilis,
their families never told that they could have been treated. The
study continues for four decades.

1939 - At an orphanage in Iowa, 22 children are the subjects of the
so-called "monster" experiment, which attempts to use psychological
abuse to induce children who spoke normally to stutter. The experiment
is designed by Dr.

Wendell Johnson, one of the nation's most prominent speech pathologists,
for the purpose of testing one of his theories on the cause of
stuttering. (CBS

1940 - In Chicago, 400 prisoners are infected with malaria in order
to study the effects of new and experimental drugs to combat the
disease. Nazi doctors later on trial at Nuremberg cite this American
study to defend their own actions during the Holocaust. (Life

1940 to 1979 - The U.K. Ministry of Defence conducts open air tests
using disease-producing bacteria and viruses. Many of these tests
involved releasing potentially dangerous chemicals and micro-organisms
over vast swaths of the population without the public being told.

1944 - The U.S. Navy uses human subjects to test gas masks and
protective clothing. Individuals are locked in a gas chamber and
exposed to poisonous mustard gas and lewisite. By the time the war
is over, more than 60,0000 U.S.

servicemen have been used as human subjects in chemical defense
research programs. They are told that they should never reveal the
nature of the experiments.

1945 - Project Paperclip is initiated. In this top secret program,
the U.S.

State Department, Army intelligence, and the CIA recruit Nazi
scientists and offer them immunity and secret identities in exchange
for work on secret government projects in the United States. (BBC

1945 - "Program F" is implemented by the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
This is the most extensive U.S. study of the health effects of
fluoride, which was a critical chemical component in atomic bomb
production. The use of fluoride in drinking water, it is found,
causes adverse effects to the central nervous system. But much of
the information is squelched in the name of "national security"
because of fear that lawsuits would undermine full-scale production
of atomic bombs. (Project

1946 to 1953 - In an experiment sponsored by the U.S. Atomic Energy
Commission and the Quaker Oats corporation at the Walter E. Fernald
State School in Massachusetts, 73 mentally disabled children are
fed oatmeal containing radioactive calcium and other radioisotopes,
in order to track "how nutrients were digested." The children are
not told that they are being fed radioactive chemicals and are
instead told by hospital staff and researchers that they are joining
a "science club." (CBS

1950 - In an experiment to determine how susceptible an American
city would be to biological attack, the U.S. Navy sprays a cloud
of bacteria from ships over San Francisco. Monitoring devices are
situated throughout the city in order to test the extent of infection.
Many residents become ill with pneumonia-like symptoms. At least
one man dies. (San Francisco

1950s - In Project GABRIEL and Project SUNSHINE, researchers in the
U.S. and the U.K. attempt to determine how much nuclear fallout
would be required to make the Earth uninhabitable. Examination of
human bodies could reveal how readily fallout from already exploded
bombs was taken up and hence how much damage it caused. Researchers
secretly collect human bodies and bones from all over the world

1953 - CIA initiates Project MKULTRA. This is an eleven year research
program designed to produce and test drugs and biological agents
that will be used for mind control and behavior modification. Six
of the subprojects involve testing the agents on unwitting human
beings. (Washington

1953 to 1970s - The CIA and Department of Defense implement Project
MKNAOMI, designed to maintain, stockpile and test biological and
chemical weapons. It establishes a robust arsenal within the CIA's
Technical Services Division (TSD) consisting of various lethal and
incapacitating materials. (Time

1960 to 1971 - Dr. Eugene Saenger, funded by the Defense Atomic
Support Agency, performs whole body radiation experiments on more
than 90 poor, black Americans. He forges consent forms, and does
not tell them what he is doing (they think they are receiving medical
care). He exposes their chests to the equivalent of about 7,500
x-rays, which cause intense pain, vomiting, and bleeding from their
nose and ears. At least eight, and as many as 20 of the subjects
die as a result. (Los Angeles

1963 - The CIA Inspector General completes a report on the MKULTRA
program stating, "A final phase of testing of MKULTRA products
places the rights and interests of U.S. citizens in jeopardy. Public
disclosure of some aspects of MKULTRA activity could induce serious
adverse reaction in U.S. public opinion." Only one copy of the
report is made due to its "unusual sensitivity." (Declassified CIA

1973 - The last of more than 2,000 volunteers, nicknamed the "white
coats,"

pass through Fort Detrick, where they have offered up their bodies
for science since 1954. The volunteers are conscientious objectors
who agree to be infected with debilitating pathogens. Many are
Seventh Day Adventists who choose to become human guinea pigs rather

1980 - The U.S. Department of Defense completes 35 years of detonating
nuclear weapons at various sites around the world, sometimes
monitoring downwind residents for medical problems and mortality
rates. A Centers for Disease Control and Prevention/National Cancer

1981 - The first cases of AIDS are confirmed in homosexual men in
New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, triggering speculation
that AIDS may have been introduced via the Hepatitis B vaccine
trials started in 1978 in these same cities. (Medical Knowledge

1985 to 1986 - According to the journal Science, HTLV and VISNA, a
fatal sheep virus, are very similar, indicating a close taxonomic
relationship. The Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
states HIV and VISNA are highly similar and share all structural
elements, except for a small segment which is nearly identical to
HTLV. This leads to speculation that HTLV and VISNA may have been
linked to produce a new retrovirus to which no natural immunity
exists.

1986 - A report to Congress reveals that the U.S. Government's
current generation of biological agents includes: modified viruses,
naturally occurring toxins, and agents that are altered through
genetic engineering to change immunological character and prevent
treatment by all existing vaccines.

(Citation needed)

1987 - The U.S. Department of Defense admits that, despite a

1994 - U.S. Senator John D. Rockefeller issues a report revealing
that for at least 50 years the Department of Defense has used
hundreds of thousands of military personnel in human experiments
and for intentional exposure to dangerous substances. Materials
included mustard and nerve gas, ionizing radiation, psychochemicals,
hallucinogens, and drugs used during the Gulf War.

(Rockefeller Report<http://www.gulfweb.org/bigdoc/rockrep.cfm>)

1994 to 1995 - Dr. Garth Nicolson at the MD Anderson Cancer Center
in Houston, TX discovers that many returning Desert Storm veterans
are infected with an altered strain of Mycoplasma incognitus, a
microbe commonly used in the production of biological weapons. He
then uncovers evidence that biological agents used during the Gulf

1999 - Jesse Gelsinger dies as a result of a University of
Pennsylvania's gene-therapy trial. The principal investigator in
the study, James Wilson holds a 30% equity stake in Genovo, which
owned the rights to license the drug being studied; the university
owned 3.2% of the company. When Targeted Genetics Corp. later

From 1988 to 2008, the number of overseas clinical trials for drugs
increases by 2,000%, to approximately 6,500 trials. These trials
are often conducted in areas with large numbers of poor and illiterate
people who grant their consent by signing an "X" or making a thumb
print on a form. The tests are rarely monitored by the FDA, and
have in some cases proved deadly. 49 babies die in New Delhi, India
during a 30-month trial. The cost of testing in countries without
safety regulations is much lower; and, due to lax or nonexistent
oversight, pharmaceutical corporations (or research companies they've
contracted out to) are able to more easily suppress research that
demonstrates harmful effects and only report positive results.

to Haiti Seven years after he was ousted in rebellion, former
president arrives on election eve talking of Haitians' plight

Jean-Bertrand Aristide, the pastor-turned-president last seen in
his native Haiti<http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/haiti> making a
rapid, undignified exit seven years ago, has returned home to a
rapturous welcome, injecting another variable into a febrile election
atmosphere 48 hours before a drawn-out presidential race climaxes.

Alexandre Meneghini/AP)Aristide, the only Haitian leader to have
been forced from office twice, offered an exotic mix of poetry and
gratitude to the hundreds of supporters who feted him at the airport
and took a sideswipe at the troubled electoral process.

The atmosphere at the airport was charged. It was here after all
that Aristide was bundled on to a plane in February 2004, leaving
behind a rebellion in full cry and a power vacuum. Since then the
country has endured landslides, political stasis and enduring poverty
all compounded by last year's earthquake which killed more than
300,000 people.

"Since the earthquake, the humiliation of the people under tents
is the humiliation of all the Haitian people," Aristide said.

For many Haitians, the former populist president who helped oust
the Duvalier regime is still admired as a champion of the poor. His
repatriation in defiance of US efforts to keep him away until
Sunday's election has run its course is seen by many as a restitution
of dignity. "President Aristide is a strong leader who doesn't take
orders from a superpower such as the United
States<http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/usa>," said Johnny Mazart,
36, a carpenter. "That's why they ousted him, because he listened
to the Haitian people, not foreigners," he told Reuters.

Journalists trampled over barriers to reposition themselves to film
the former president as he descended from a long-range private jet
accompanied by his family and black rights activist Danny Glover.
His wife, Mildred, had tears of joy in her eyes as her daughters
buttressed her down the steps on to the Haitian tarmac.

Outside the airport, hundreds of supporters gathered with rara bands
and welcoming chants. "Modern-day slavery will have to end today,"
said Aristide.

"The greatest richness of Haiti is Haitians. Remedy for Haiti is
love."

Aristide thanked the government of South Africa, which had hosted
him, and the friends who helped him return. He switched between
Haitian Creole, French, English, Zulu and Spanish, and onlookers
cheered at his linguistic and geological references and metaphors
about Haiti's plight and his repatriation.

"You can cut off our feet but not our roots that go all the way
back to Africa
... This country needs education with dignity without social exclusion ... The
exclusion of [his party] Lavalas is exclusion of the majority. The
solution is inclusion."

In the Citi Soleil slum, crowds of people were reported to be
chanting for the annulment of Sunday's election, which pits the
popular musician Michel "Sweet Micky" Martelly and the former first
lady Mirlande Manigat. In Solino, another neighbourhood where
Aristide commanded much support, the streets were calm but people
were unsure sure how to react to the arrival of such a divisive
figure on the last day of campaigning.

"He is not here to interrupt the elections," said Wesly Desalan.
"He is here to help Haitians get out of the current political
crisis."

Later, attention turned to Aristide's house in Tabarre where thousands
had gathered and, as at the airport, disregarded the barriers to
flood the yard.

By contrast, the other towering figure who returned in January,
Jean-Claude Duvalier, has been arrested and charged with corruption.
Most people, even those who revile Aristide, think he has every
right to be back, particularly as Duvalier's return was tolerated.

In front of the crumbled national palace everything was unusually
quiet.

Saturday is the last day of campaigning before Sunday's run-off
vote, and one of the candidates' campaign managers said more than
50,000 people had gathered there on Friday night for a concert by
Wyclef Jean, Busta Rhymes, Black Alex and Ti Vice, a group of Haitian
musicians endorsing Martelly.
