Advisory Committee Resources
[Note: WRIS Packet #3 published a full list of members of key
DOD, NASA, and EPA federal advisory committee members. This
update for 1991 shows what some of the DOD committees were
doing and lists new academic members to these committees.]
On an early February trip to Washington, DC, WRIS
Clearinghouse Coordinator Rich Cowan visited the General
Services Agency Committee Management Secretariat (tel. 202-
632-1135) and extracted the following information:
o In 1991 the DoD had 66 Federal Advisory Committees, 26 of
which were "technical" and 7 of which were "national policy"
related. The committees held a total of 504 meetings, 151 of
which were open to the public. The non-federal members were
paid $568,914 for their attendance at these meetings; $2.3
Million was spent on travel. The total DoD federal advisory
committees budget was $14.7 Million. All committees are re-
quired to issue a public report summarizing all Closed Meetings.
o Two task forces, the National Space Council and the Task Force
on US Government International Broadcasting failed to release
their membership lists. The National Security Agency Scientific
Advisory Board again released only one name on its
membership list; we have filed a FOIA request to discover this
information.
o The Board of Visitors of the National Defense University still
has no academic members. A new Defense Environmental
Responsibility Task Force was formed in 1991; it also has no
academic members.
o A new Federal Advisory Commission on Consolidation and
Conversion of Defense Research and Development Laboratories
was created. Only academic member: Dr. John Palms of the
University of South Carolina. This title looks quite promising
indeed, but the all-male panel does not appear to have any
experts on converting weapons labs to peaceful uses.
