Child murdered after abuser wins custody

Kayla McKean was found dead last week, Nov.25 in favorite place -- near a
creek
southeast of the popular Alexander Springs Recreation Area in the Ocala
National Forest near Orlando, FL.
Kayla's dad, Richard Adams confessed to slamming Kayla's small body against a
wall and beating her when she soiled her underwear. His defense? "Accidents
happen," Adams said, "I asked for help for my anger problem…and they didn't
help me."
In October a Florida DCF supervisor reported that Adams could benefit from
parenting and anger-management classes, but no one told him about it.
Adams had a violent arrest record, yet Judge Jerry Lockett, only considered a
report on Kayla's black eyes and swelling, not many other injuries, and
recommended custody be awarded to the father.
"We made some bad decisions. I think all the parties involved made some bad
decisions," said Pamela Paulik, district administrator for Florida's
Department of Children and Families.
In several Georgia and North Carolina custody cases, violent abusers have won
custody when the mother or physicians reported child abuse to police
officials.
Consider the following psychologists' reports on a typical domestic violence
case:
Pamela Laughon, Ph.D., Dept. of Psychology, UNC-Asheville. -- "In my brief
interview with Amelia, she indicated she wished to live with her mother at
this time…..According to her teachers for the past three years, Amelia has
consistently shown greater attachment to her mother, and has expressed her
desire to return to live with her mother."
"Michael has been evaluated using an offender protocol by Dave Evers, who
concluded he was not a pedophile or child molester……Michael Wrightson, on the
other hand, is a man who feels deeply wronged by the "system"; he is
understandably angry and bitter, and he resents most forms of authority.
Although I personally like him very much, he is somewhat of an intellectual
and can be harsh and judgmental about others. As a result, he has made a
number of "enemies" in Asheville, and has been described to me in various ways
as the "most dangerous" man one person ever met, a definite "pedophile", and a
"frightening and intimidating person."
David L. Evers, M.A., Family Relations & Intimacy Center, Asheville --
"Psychological testing shows Michael to be defensive, overly cautious and
unwilling to admit to many personal faults…..When threatened Michael is like
to react with self-righteous indignation, complaining that he has been
wronged. Or, he may "clam up" only to "blow up" later in response to no
apparent provocation. He bears grudges and is not likely to easily be able to
"forgive and forget" after an argument."
"IMPRESSIONS: 309.9 Adjustment disorder manifested in social withdrawal,
hypersensitivity to criticism and argumentativeness."
"RECOMMENDATIONS: 1. I found no signs of sexual maladjustment in my
examination….As noted his daily functioning is somewhat compromised by the
stress generated by this case. He might find some temporary assistance with
medications such as Prozac…..2. Counseling will only add another stressor
because it will be perceived as an additional assault on his self by Michael
and is not recommended."
Dr. Judith Pohl, Ph.D. The Pisgah Institute, Asheville, -- "…the impact of
Amelia being physically separated from her mother should be evaluated, and I
question the emotional impact of Amelia's feelings and desires in this matter
having been ignored at each phase of these proceedings over the past several
years."
"Although the findings of this evaluation suggest that Amelia is now
retracting her previous disclosure of sexual abuse, it should be noted that if
Amelia were coached or influenced by her mother prior to the disclosure, it is
also possible that she is feeling direct or indirect pressure from living with
her father to retract previous statements. It is my opinion however, that the
original disclosures of sexual abuse were examples of undesired or
uncomfortable touches and not sexual abuse…..Amelia perceives her father as
very angry and is having difficulty addressing her feelings and thoughts
directly to him."
Dr. Jonathan Lauter, MD, Psychiatrist in Atlanta --. Dr. Lauter said "Amelia
is not at risk with her father, particularly with Elena (Scott) present,
meanwhile, Michael should undergo individual therapy for stress/anger
management."
In a report filed by DSS, Cindy Graene, Anna's teacher at the Jewish Community
Center, stated that Anna Scott had recurring, unusual and inappropriate
behaviors such as "sucking on a stick that another child was holding right
below his waist and that Anna looked to see if anybody was watching her, and
during body tracing she colored hers and drew a long pointed mark between her
legs."
A physical examination of the Scott child revealed evidence of anal and
vaginal penetration. The Scott child then disclosed that Michael Wrightson
would put her on his lap, that his "bone would get hard" and that he would put
his bone in her vagina.
Kimberly Rowland, Social Worker, Buncombe County DSS -- "that during the
investigation Mr. Wrightson was uncooperative, hostile, and made several
threatening statements to me and to other individuals in the Buncombe County
Department of Social Services; specifically, that Mr. Wrightson would have our
jobs and that all the women were involved in a lesbian group form Georgia to
Asheville and they were tyring to deprive him of his child. Jeannie Wrightson
was not the reporter in the Anna Scott case, and the only contact I had with
Jeannie Wrightson ws on August 31, 1994, when I contacted her and requested
that she sign a release of information so that I could talke to Amelia's
therapist." (He also threatened to shoot them as stated in another report.)
Connie McMillan, Social Worker, Buncombe County DSS -- "Amelia disclosed to
the Department of Social Services worker that her father touches her private
parts" She confirms her as "a NEGLECTED juvenile and does not receive proper
care, supervision, or discipline from her parent, guardian, custodian or
caretaker and that she lives in an environment injurious to the juvenile's
welfare."
Cynthia Montalvo, LCSW, ACSW, Alpharetta, GA -- "She stated that her father
"does things for me that I can do for myself", such as, "washing my hair, my
body, my cooter, and my butt hard with his hand and a bar of soap….During the
course of the evaluation, Amelia also disclosed that she and Anna touched each
other's private parts while playing "doctor….exploration with fingers and a
"penis game" in which she and Anna place a "recorder" in front of their bodies
and pretend to have a penis…..Delores Roys of the Highland Institute…According
to her, 90% of sex offenders do not use the boundary of a wash cloth and only
use their hands and soap so that they can fondle private parts during a
child's bath. She also stated that the "massage" could be a ploy to appear
helpful while touching the buttocks for his own sexual stimulation. She
further indicted that the "doctor play" between Amelia and Anna was too
sophisticated for their age group."

Judge Cash said in his final order that because everyone in Asheville,
including the police, social services, citizens thought Michael was a child
molester or heard that he was, then he should be allowed to move to Chico, CA
to avoid the stimgma.
In addition, to child sexual abuse, according to unrefuted courtroom testimony
he is also a violent batterer. He perjured himself when he denied having and
DUI's, when in fact he lost his GA drivers license due to over 40 points of
DUI's and was arrested for driving with a suspended/revoked license. He has
thousands of child pornography posts in child sex usenet sites.
Like Richard Adams, Michael Wrightson was advised to take anger management
therapy, he didn't, and like Adams he won custody.
