Dear Sir

One thing that is amiss in MIS is monthly planner that gives parents an idea about daily activities planned in the school for each subject. Parents should be notified at the start of academic year for day-to-day plan of each month (at least for major tasks, chapters to be covered etc.).This is a common practice followed in all the leading schools.

Also, in summer, do you think school start timings could be pre-poned a little, could be even for sports activities.

Would appreciate your thoughts.

Dear Parent,

Both the points are very valid and needs some discussion.

I can meet the Principal Madam and discuss the matter with her.

hi,

I personally feel that it is a great idea to seek more visibility about what is happening in the school. It communicates very strongly to every stakeholder (students, teachers and even the school management) that parents are interested to support in the learning of students. This can create possibilities of more collaborative parent-teacher interaction and improved student learning.

However, we should be careful that we should let the teachers have the freedom to delve more on concepts with which students of a particular class are struggling and then lesser on others topics. In that context, a monthly to weekly granularity of topics to be covered/ concepts to be introduced etc. is more appropriate (than the day-to-day plan).

We should leave some autonomy with the teachers to judge on-the-fly if the class needs more support for a concept, instead of trying to follow a plan that has been insisted upon - because when such a detailed plan exists, then some parent will insist on it to be followed 'exactly', and that will limit the flexibility with the teacher and subsequently the learning of the students.

what do you think?

Dear Sir

Thanks so much for sharing our concern. We agree with the other suggestion that weekly-monthly planner would go a long way in enabling parents to track various concepts/chapters/topics to be taken up with students, and thereby guide children more effectively, & strengthen their concepts.

At present, such plan is not being followed consistently, and at times, new topics/concepts introduced to children come as a surprise to parents; children are not adequately prepared for upcoming topics. Planner could include curricular as well as co-curricular activities, in addition to reviews/assessment/exercises scheduled for each month.

Also, if a new game/sport could be introduced in each class for girls as well. Currently, girls in some primary classes have been excluded from regular sports coaching.

Look forward to a positive outcome in this direction.

Dear all,
A lot has previously been discussed at this forum about the monthly planner/ schedule being folowed in  the class w.r.t. text books available with the students. A concrete outcome is still awaited. It would certainly be helpful to all if parents are aware of the individual subject schedule. Text books assigned in the school are really helpful but in certain subjects, hardly 50% of the text is being covered in all. In certain subject, the assigned text book was not even opened in the class.
Some parents may further evaluate themselves that over the years, the topics covered in recent academic years are less than what it was earlier in preceeding years.
A sincere request to all concerned to initaite the circulation of monthly or quarterly planner atleast on trial basis.

regards,
Harish

Dear Sir

Going by these posts, it is our collective onus to ensure that MIS does not lose its sheen, and parents contribute by giving constructive suggestions. We reallly appreciate the steps you have taken, or intend to take in future to take MIS to the highest pedestal, however, please increase visibility of new ideas that have been implemented thus far.

I seek your opinion on the feedback by a parent that some chapters/topics were not covered in the class vs. the previous year and also on the following points

1. Frequency of parent-teacher interaction - 3-4 times in a year of which twice it will be for signing the report card
2. Need for objective feedback on ward's perfromance by teachers teaching key subjects (not just the class teacher, as is the practice in PTM)
3. Need for monthly/quarterly planner that gives parents complete visibility on topics/assessments to be covered in the class
4. Number of opportunities for students to learn new skills - confidence building measures, debates/declamation/quizzes/recitals, co-curricular activities, rigorous sports coaching etc. Mindspark was one such excellent initiative introduced by school.

We need to encourage parents to come forward with suggestions, involve them more for improvement in various spheres. We had high hopes from this forum, wherein parents could share inputs, constructive criticism, positive feedback to raise the level in academics, value education, sports, etc. on the lines of chintan-shivar organized by political parties, ofsite branstorm sessions by corporates in order to look within and improve further.

We need to hear from you, if not from school management, on how MIS is evolving, keeping pace with changes around us for betterment of students.

Let us be more open and reach out to parents for suggestions, because all of us want to see MIS to be the most admired school in Delhi.

Best Regards,
MIS Parents

According to many published research articles (here is one: http://pediatrics.aappublications.org/content/115/6/1555.abstract) children learn better after 9 or 10. Google will find many others. So, in essence we are already starting too early. If anything we should start later -- especially in winter.

Dear Parents,

I have discussed the matter of monthly planner with the Principal Madam. Last term the whole syllabus of the term II was put up on the MIS parent portal. This time I have requested for uploading monthly syllabus to be covered. For class IX the syllabus with monthly coverage has been given by some subject teachers. Others I am hoping would come out soon. Principal Madam has given me assurance that it will be done soon.

Infact one of the issues that parents of Class XI were requesting was combination of Psychology and Biology in Class XI. It has now been offered after a lot of discussion and persuasion.

I thought  I will share with you these. A lot of parents helped me in this regard. My sincere thanks to you all.

best regards

Dear Mr Banerjee,

What is the PTA view on the following for the Academic Session 2013-14.

1) The new bus routes notified have created a lot of confusion and are not properly planned. The parents were not consulted on the reorganisation of routes.

2) The School is charging Rs. 3600/- as annual fees for Mindspark (does not have CBSE approval) ostensibly to cross subsidise the EWS category of students.
Mindspark is for classes 1 to 10. Each class has 5 sections making it a total of 50 sections. Each section has an average of 35 students. Total no of students are 1750 making the total fee collection to Rs.63 lacs. The average number of students who are to be fully cross subsidised by the school will be 77.

Is a figure available how many EWS students have been admitted by the School and how much will be utilised for this cross subsidy since a part reimbursement is also being made by the Delhi Govt.again this has not been discussed with the parents, it has just been added in the fees and parents have to pay up.

No one is questioning the thought behind the cross subsidy but should the school not take the parents into confidence before unilaterally implementing it.

I would like to raise an even more fundamental aspect re MIndspark. We have subscribed for a year now -- although in my son's class a large number of mindspark sessions were cancelled in favor of some other activity. Nevertheless, an evaluation of the impact of the subscription has to be considered critically. Did the collective ability of MIS students go up? Is there an objective measure before and after?

Dear Parents,

Your concerns are justified but I have some facts to share with you -

1. Midspark is only from Classes 4 to 8 and not 1 to 10. It was not compulsory last year and is not compulsory this year also.

2. Even if the parent has paid the fee, they can opt out of it. They will get an adjustment in next term. If they have paid for the whole year, they will get a refund. This option is there till the classes start.

3. EWS burden was not passed on to other parents. Midspark is supposed to give them free.

4. Delhi Govt has as yet not released any money to the school. Many reminders have gone.

5.     Regarding the issue of the bus routes, I understand that many routes were catering to areas where it was very difficult to maneuver the low floor buses and also the buses were running long distances for the sake of, in many case, just one student.

best regards

Sujit

Dear Mr Banerjee,

The school says Mindspark is compulsory from this year onwards and the decision is not reversible. In case there is a notification by the school with regards to point no 2 in your trailing mail the same may kindly be posted in this forum.

As regards the EWS burden being cross subsidised via Mindspark it is the school administration dept. that is saying this?

Can you share your cell no with the group.

Dear Mr Bannerjee

Mindspark should NOT be discontinued since it is an innovative tool to increase mental ability, and analytical aptitude of students. I don't think we should go by opinion of a few vociferous parents, and request the school management to seek feedback from all parents, and then take a final call.

While we all go on vacation or dine outside, we never worry about frittering away a few thousand bucks.

Sir - this needs your urgent intervention. We are for Mindspark to continue, and at best it can be made optional.

Kindly help!!

Regards

MIS-3 has the highest no of stops with Max load. Needs to make it 5 stops, in line with other bus routes. Its very urgent.

Try Khan Academy www.khanacademy.org it is much superior and better than Mindspark.
