One of my users has a mysterious problem running karma (kvis, kpvslice,
...) now.
It's a great tool to visualiza and dissect data cubes (kpvslice is my
favorite), but the
source is not maintained anymore. Binaries are made available and I
usually pop them
into the miriad summerschool release.

In this particular case "it used to work" (quoting the user), but
doesn't anymore. It
dies with the horrific

Port allocated: 5621
Host: "/tmp/launch-EdqIZJ/org.macosforge.xquartz" not in database
xi_check_shared_images_available: error getting Internet address of X server

message. My interpretation is that the way Mac has once again decided
it's going to
hack how X works on a mac has changed, although programs like xterm work
fine.
I think ds9 also works, but good old karma not as of now. Mac does't
seem to
use the $DISPLAY variable, so I don't know how to get this working. I
know very
little about the inner workings of a mac, so if somebody has this
working, oryou has
the same error, I'd love to know.

If you have the school version, but never used it, and want to send me a
blurb if it's
working or not, the command kvis or kpvclice should suffice. either it
crashed, or it
brings up a window, let me know

Hi,

Karma (kvis and kpvslice) has not been working, since I have updated my Mac's operating system from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion. I get the error message below when I try to run both kvis and kpvslice.

-bash: /Local/karma/bin/kvis: Bad CPU type in executable

What about this error? Any idea?

I came up with a discussion (old) on the internet having the same problem (https://atcaforum.atnf.csiro.au/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=128). They are talking about x86_64_Darwin but there is no version of this for Mac 10.8 Mountain lion, only up to 10.7 (according to this link including karma distribution: ftp://ftp.atnf.csiro.au/pub/software/karma/). Apparently some people have karma up and running on their Mountain lion.

Best,

I should add that this user also has 10.9 where things are working fine.

their website may be out of date, my build script does grab a binary but might be more up to date.

I also have some source code, but that's an older version. it frankly baffles me from the author who was a.big supporter of.open source, and who wrote this code while being paid for as his phd, that he has not donated this back to the community.

I can happily report it works again, although the error message
persists. To quote the innocent party:

I upgraded Xquartz to 2.7.7 and now it works, albeit with the same error message.
Not sure if it was upgrading Xquartz or just restarting Xquartz that did the trick.
