mc in mintty has wrong characters

Started using mintty after years of using the cygwin.bat and I really like it but when I run midnight commander it shows the wrong box characters.

but when I ssh to a linux server and then run mc I get the proper boxing characters.

I've been messing around with LANG and LC_ALL and anything else I can think of but I can not get this working. Anyone have any ideas that may help:?
