ஓவியர் மனோகர் தேவதாஸ் அவர்கள் மறைவு அதிர்ச்சி அளிக்கிறது! கண் பார்வை இருந்தபோது, மதுரை மாநகரின் பல இடங்களை வெகுநுட்பமாக வரைந்தவர்!

1977 சென்னை பெருவெள்ளம் நினைவிருக்கிறதா? கோட்டூர்புரம் குடிசை வாரியக்குடியிருப்பு பகுதியில் வெள்ளம்!
சென்னை மியூசிக் அகாதமியின் எதிர் வரிசையில் அப்போது மாக்ஸ்முல்லர் பவன் இருந்தது. அதில் நடைபெற்ற வெள்ளப் புகைப்படக் கண்காட்சியில்தான் முதன்முதலில் இவரைச் சந்தித்தேன். 'மெட்ராஸ் யூத் காயர்' உறுப்பினர் இவர்! வங்கி ஊழியர் கலைக்குழு ( BEAT) சங்கர நேத்ராலயா பரங்கிமலையில் நடத்திய நிகழ்ச்சிக்கு வந்திருந்து சிறப்பித்தார். அப்போது மருத்துவர்/ இயக்குநர் பத்ரிநாத் அவர்களும் வாழ்த்தினார்.( நான் 'பீட்' வீதிநாடகக் குழுவில் இருந்தேன் ).
இவரது இணையர் மகிமா அவர்களும் சிறந்த ஓவியர்! (ஆங்கில இலக்கியத்தில் முதுகலை) ரோம மறுமலர்ச்சி கால ஓவியம் போன்றது மகிமாவின் திருமுகம்!

இளைஞர்களின் சண்டித்தனம் நிறைந்த டிரைவிங் காரணமாக ஏற்பட்ட சாலை விபத்தில் முதுகுத்தண்டு முறிவினால் சீர்செய்ய இயலாதபடி சக்கரநாற்காலியிலேயே இறுதிக்காலம் வரை கழித்து உயிர் நீத்தார்!
இணையரைச் சக்கரநாற்காலியில் அமரவைத்துத் தள்ளியபடி பொதுநிகழ்ச்சிகளுக்கு வருவார் ஓவியர் மனோகர்!
அன்பு இணையர் இல்லாத வாழ்க்கையை அவர் கடந்த விதம் துயரமானது!

இதேபோன்ற ஒரு கிறிஸ்துமஸ் மாதத்தில் மகிமாவும் காலமானார்!
வெகுகாலம் முன்பு, சாந்தோம் கஸ்டியன் பீச் தெருவிலுள்ள இவரது இல்லத்திற்குச் சென்று சந்தித்திருக்கிறேன். கிறிஸ்துமஸ் வாழ்த்து அட்டைகள் வரைந்து அனுப்புவார்; தமது ஓவியங்களை பிக்சர் கார்டுகளாக விற்பனை செய்து அவற்றை சமூகத் தொண்டிற்காகச் செலவிட்டார்!

மனோகர்- மகிமா இணையர் நினைவுகள் அன்பு மயமானவை! விபத்து ஏற்படுத்திய இளைஞர்களையும் மன்னித்த மனிதர்கள் இவர்கள் !

He never missed any of my lectures.

On to his left you can see Sujatha Shankar. With her text and Mano's line sketches a coffee table book titled "Madras Inked" has been published. It has a foreword by me..
He was such a dear friend to me. As Madurai men we got along well. He was college mate of my younger brother Dr K R Balasubramaniam (later principal of Madura College).
For my book Aalavai he has provided 4 full page drawings of Madurai.
