அனைவருக்கும் தமிழ் இலக்கியம் போய்சேரவேண்டும்   என்ற ஒரே காரணத்திற்காக  ....

மலிவு விலையில் ரூபாய் ஒன்றுக்கு தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களை வெளியிட்டார் .

 

வரலாற்று மீது பற்று கொண்டதால்

பல்லன் கோயில் செப்பேட்டை  உலகுக்கு வெளிக்கொணர்ந்தார்.

(இச் செப்பேடு தான் தமிழ்நாட்டில் கிடைத்த பழமை வாய்ந்த செப்பேடு -கி.பி ஆறாம் நூற்றாண்டு - பல்லவர் காலம் )

( இதன் முதல் செப்பேடு உடைத்துள்ளது அதன் ஒருபாதி பகுதி கிடைக்கவில்லை.)

Late Sri. Rajam was born on 22.11.1904.  After a good academic career, he became a Chartered Accountant.  Later he along with his brother became a Partner of an Auctioneering Firm, Murray & Co. Sri. Rajam was a partner and then the sole proprietor of Murray & Co. for more than thirty five years and he was popularly known as `Murray Rajam’. Sri. Rajam developed great interest in Tamil language from his school days. He was captivated by the beauty of the language. Late Sri. U. V. Swaminatha Iyer was his role model and Sri. Rajam often used to speak about him with great reverence. Sri. Rajam was disturbed by the fact that Tamil was not given the importance it deserved and decided to publish Tamil literature and sell them at a subsidized rate to make is accessible to the not so affluent. Sri. Rajam was encouraged and supported by several tamil scholars like Sri. Saw Ganesan, Sri. S. Vaiyapuri Pillai, Sri.Kandasami Pillai, Sri. P.N. Appuswami, Sri. T P Meenakshi Sundaram Pillai, Sri. A.S. Gnanasambandam, Sri. P. Sri Aacharya, Sri. M.V. Venugopal Pillai, Sri. K.V.Jagannathan, Sri.V.M. Subramanya Iyer. In 1955, he started publishing old Tamil literature through the series of ‘Tamil Ilakkiya Selvam’. Subsequently, with the encouragement of the above said scholars, Sri. Rajam published ancient tamil books such as Mudhalayiram, Thiruvaimozhi, Eyarpaa, Periya Thirumozhi, Thiruvasagam, Silappathigaaram, Manimegalai, Kalladam, Ashtap Prabandham, Paththuppaattu, Ettuthogai, Paattum Thogaiyum, Kamba Ramayanam, Villi Baratham, Tholkappiyam. With his lofty ideals of making the books available to all sections of society, Sri. Rajam sold these books at just Re. 1, even though the cost of publication was substantially more.

எனக்குத் தெரிந்த சில விவ்ரங்களையும் சொல்லலாமே. முர்ரே ராஜம் பதிப்பித்த தமிழ் இலக்கிய புத்தகங்கள், மிக அழகான பதிப்புகள். எஸ். ராஜம் வரைந்த சித்திரங்களைக் கொண்ட அட்டையுடன் வெளிவந்தன. எனக்கு அவை அறிமுகமானது 1957-ல். அப்போது தான் அவை வரத்தொடங்கின. அட்டைப் படம் வரைந்த எஸ் ராஜம் சங்கீதத்தில் ஆழ்ந்தவர்.  அவரது தம்பி தான் வீணை எஸ் பாலசந்தர் என்று சொல்லக் கேள்விப்பட்டேன். ராஜத்தின் சித்திர வல்லமை பற்றித் தெரியாத இன்றைய இளம் தலைமுறையினர், மிகவும் பிரபலமான எல்லா இடங்களிலும் காணப்படும் சங்கீத் மும்மூர்த்திகளின் உருவச் சித்திரம் எஸ் ராஜம் அவர்கள் வரைந்தது தான்.

இவ்வளவு பல்கலை வல்லுனராக இருந்த எஸ் ராஜம்  மிகவும் அடக்கமானவர்.  சமீபத்தில் தான் மறைந்தார்.

Murray S. (Sakkai) Rajam is different from Tamil movie actor and great
painter, S. Rajam
who just recently passed away. My relatives have many paintings done
by the actor/painter
S. Rajam who was Veenai S. Balachader's brother. Lalitha Ram, of
Bangalore, has written
nicely about S. Rajam & his paintings, movies etc.,

நல்ல செய்திக்கு நன்றி திரு வெ. சா! எஸ். ராஜம் வரைந்த அட்டைப்பட ஓவியங்கள் மிக நுணுக்கமானவை, அருமையானவை. என்னிடம் அவர் பதிப்பித்த நூல்கள் (அந்தக் காலத்தில் வாங்கியவை) சில உள்ளன.

அவருடைய இன்றைய தலைமுறை அந்த நூல்களை மீள் பதிப்புச் செய்யலாம், அல்லது ஆங்காங்கே கிடைக்கின்ற நூல்களையாவது மின்னாக்கம் செய்ய இசைவு கொடுக்கலாம்.

"சந்தி குறியீட்டு விளக்கம்" நூல் பற்றியும் "சாசனமாலை" நூல் பற்றியும் நண்பர் மணிவண்ணன் மூலம் கேட்டும் சாந்தி சாதனா பதிப்பகத்தாரிடமிருந்து பதில் வரவே இல்லை. என்ன செய்ய? கம்பராமாயணம், ... இன்னும் சில நூல்கள் (மர்ரே + எஸ். ராஜம் பதிப்பு) என்னிடம் இருக்கு. என் காலத்துக்குப்பின் இந்த நூல்களை என்ன செய்ய என்று என் மகனுக்கெல்லாம் தெரியாது. எங்கே போகும் என்றும் சொல்லமுடியாது.

You had said that lexicography is well advanced in Tamil and Malayalam. What are the reasons?

Tamil has a long literary tradition, especially after the discovery of the Sangam texts. S. Vaiyapuri Pillai did great work in compiling the Tamil Lexicon and after him Murray Rajam initiated further important lexicographic work. The Malayalam Lexicon of the University of Kerala is following this lead. I hope Tamil scholars will extend their work to the study of cognate languages, in particular small tribal languages with no native linguists, and thus enlarge the understanding of the common prehistoric background of all Dravidian languages. The study of the Indus script suffers greatly from inadequate knowledge of ancient compound words, which have not survived in Tamil or Malayalam, but [have] possibly [survived] elsewhere.

elder bro. of VeeNai S. Balachander. Lives in Mylapore
tank street. My family & relatives have decades of
relatioship with him. And, we have several original pgs.
by S. Rajam. Rajam started painting for KalaimakaL,
his sketches for Ki. Vaa. Ja.'s explanation of
sangam poetry is exquisite. He also did the cover
pages for Murray S. Rajam's edition of sangam and later
tamil literary works.

This gentleman helped Murray S Rajam in his publications

He came to Madras, joined the Madras Christian College High School, and served there from 1929 till 1964 as a teacher.

In 1939, he wrote his B.O.L. in Madras University. [[date given by TVG]]

While in Madras, he stayed in Triplicane. His house was not far from U.V.S.'s house (which can be seen even now in Triplicane).

Until the time of UVS's death, in 1942, he would go in the early morning and help him in his task of bringing out editions of the old Tamil classics.

In vacation times, he would also go with him on trips to find Tamil palm-leaf manuscripts.

Later, he staid in Nungambakkam (according to T.V. Gopal Iyer, who met him there in 1961).

VMS was connected with UVS library

VMS was also connected with Murray Rajam: he worked with Mr Rajam and helped to his publications [comment by P.B. Seshadri]

விஷ்ணம்பேட்டை முத்துரங்கையர் சுப்ரமணிய ஐயர் (04 06 1905 ~ 06 10 1981):II

சற்றே தேற்றிக்கொண்டேன். பேராசிரியர் நாகநந்தி அவர்களின் குடும்பமும், திரு.ஹரிகி போன்ற மாணவர்களும் சிரத்தை எடுத்துக்கொண்டதால் தான் அவருக்கு மணிமண்டபம் நிறுவப்பட்டது. அவரது படைப்புகள் பத்திரப்படுத்தப்பட்டன. இனியாவது நாம் யாவரும் இயன்றவரையில் நம் மரபுகளை அழிக்காமல் இருந்தால், நலம். போற்றி பாதுகாத்தால் நன்மை. ஆய்வுகள் பல செய்து நம் இலக்கிய அறிவின் தரத்தை உயர்த்தினால் மேன்மை. இடைச்செருகல்கள்/ இரவலுக்கு சொந்தம் கொண்டாடுவது/ஒருவர் படைப்பை உருவி போர்த்திக்கொள்வது போன்ற குற்றங்களை தவிர்த்தால், பட்டொளி வீசி பறக்கும், தமிழன்னையின் புகழ். தடையேதும் இருந்தால், சொல்லுங்கள். கூடி, விடை காண்போம்.

திரு. வி.எம்.சுப்ரமண்ய ஐயர் (வி.எம்.எஸ்.) அவர்களுக்கு வருவோம். நேற்று தொடர்பு லேசாக பிரிந்தது. குடமுருட்டி ஆறு, துள்ளலும், ஓட்டமுமாக, அசைந்தாடி வரும் திருக்காட்டு பள்ளி என்னும் பாடஸ்தலத்தில் பள்ளிக்கல்வி, அவருக்கு. தமிழ்த்தாத்தா என்று பிற்காலம் புகழப்பட்ட திரு. உ.வே.சா. அவர்களின் அறிமுகம் கிடைத்தது. அண்ணாமலை பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் முன்னோடியான மீனாக்ஷி கல்லூரியில் தமிழில் (வடமொழி வினாத்தாள் ஒன்றும் உண்டு.) வித்வான் பட்டத்துக்குப் படிக்கச்சொல்லி, அவர் ஆலோசனை தந்தார். முதலிடம் பெற்ற வி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்களுக்கு  திருப்பனந்தாள் மடம் 1000 ரூபாய் பரிசு அறிவிக்க, அதை 1929ல் கும்பகோணம் போர்ட்டர் ஹாலில் நடந்த விழாவில், தலைமை தாங்கி உவேசா அவர்களே வழங்கினார். அந்த உயர்ந்த பரிசை பெற்ற முதல் மாணவன், திரு. வி.எம்.எஸ். இரண்டாமவர்: வித்வான். வி.பூவராகம் பிள்ளை ~ 1930 (என்னே அழகிய திருமண் நாமம்.): மூன்றாமவர்: வித்வான்.கே.சுந்தரமூர்த்தி ஐயர் ~ 1931: நான்காவது: வித்வான் டி.பி. பழனியப்பப்பிள்ளை ~ 1932: ஐந்தாவது: கி.வா.ஜகந்நாத ஐயர் ~ 1933. நமக்கு பொதுவாக, கி.வா.ஜ.அவர்களை பற்றியும், அவருடைய சிலேடையை பற்றி திருப்பூர் கிருஷ்ணன் அவர்கள் சொல்வதும் தெரியும். ஏதோ, தமிழன் செய்த பூர்வஜன்ம சாபல்யமாக,வி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்களின் புதல்வி நாகலக்ஷ்மியின் செவிவாய் செய்திகளை அடித்தளமாக வைத்து, ஃபிரான்ஸ் நாட்டு தமிழ் புலவர் ழான் - [Jean-Luc Chevillard]ம், முனைவர்  எஸ்.ஏ.எஸ். சர்மா அவர்களும் தராவிடில் திருவாசகத்தை ஆங்கிலத்தில் அருமையாக மொழி பெயர்த்த வி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்களை முற்றிலும் மறந்து இருப்போம். தமிழன்னை நம்மை மன்னித்திருக்கமாட்டாள். மற்ற மூவரை பற்றியும் செய்திகள் வந்தால் நல்லது. கூகில் தேடுபொறியில் அவர்களை பற்றி ஒரு தகவலும் இல்லை. எண்பது வருடங்களுக்குள், தமிழில் முதல் பரிசு வாங்கிய அறிஞர்களை பொது நினைவாற்றலிலிருந்து தமிழார்வலர்கள் தொலைத்து விட்டார்கள் என்று நேரடியாக குற்றம் சாற்றுகிறேன். இது நிற்க.

1929லிருந்து 1964 வரை சென்னை கிருத்துவக்கல்லூரியில் ஆசிரியராக பணி புரிந்த வி.எம்.எஸ். அவர்கள் 1930 ல் பி.ஓ.எல். பரிக்ஷை எழுதினார், திருவல்லிக்கேணியில், உவேசா அவர்களில் இல்லத்தருகே, வசித்து, அன்றாடம் அவருடைய ஆய்வுப்பணியில் உதவி வந்தார்; விடுமுறை காலங்களில் ஏடுகள் தேடும் பணியில் அவருடன் இணைந்து உழைத்தார். ஐந்து நூல்களின் அறிமுகத்தில், உ.வே.சா. அவர்கள் வி.எம்.எஸ்.பற்றி எழுதியிருக்கிறார். உவேசா நூலகத்துடன் அவருக்கு தொடர்பு இருந்தது. முர்ரே ராஜம் என்ற ஏலமிட்டு வணிகம் செய்த பிரமுகர், பழைய தமிழ் நூல்களை ஆராய்ந்து பதிவு செய்து ரூபாய் 1/- வீதம், கிட்டத்தட்ட இலவசமாக, விற்பனை செய்தார். என்னிடம் சில உளன. அவருக்கு உதவியாக வி.எம்.எஸ் இருந்ததாகத் தெரிகிறது. 1966ல் பாண்டிச்சேரி வந்தடைந்தார். INSTITUT FRANÇAIS DE PONDICHÉRY ஆதரவு அளித்தது.

அவர் ஆங்கிலத்தில் மொழி பெயர்த்தவை:

1. அகநானூறு: 1975: மூன்று தொகுப்புகள்;
2. தேவாரம்: 1976 -1984 15 தொகுப்புகள்
3. 9வது -10வது திருமுறை - திரு. பி.பி.சேஷாத்ரி சொன்னது;
4. 11வது திருமுறை - 2 தொகுப்புகள் தயாரான நிலையில் மறைவு; 3வது;

 தொகுப்பு: டி.வி.கங்காதரன்; 4 வது டி.வி.கோபால ஐயர்.

அவருடைய ஞாபகார்த்தக்கூட்டத்தில் பேராசிரியர் க்ராஸ் பேசிய உரையில் ஒலிப்பதிவு, உசாத்துணையில் உளது.

ரகசியமாக ஒற்றர்கள் சந்திக்கும்போது, ஒரே நூறு ரூபாய் நோட்டின் இரு துண்டுகளை பரிமாரிக்கொள்வார்களாம். அது மாதிரி, நேற்று இணைத்த அறிவிப்பின் கீழ் பாதியும், திரு.வி.எம்.எஸ் அவர்களின் விசால முகாரவிந்த சித்திரத்தைத்தையும், டிஜிடல் தேவாரத்தை பற்றிய ஒரு ஆய்வுத்க்ட்டுரையையும் இணைத்துள்ளேன். பொறுத்த்தாள்க.

நான் கீழை தஞ்சை வரலாற்று  ஆய்விற்காக  செய்திகளை சேகரித்தபோது...

 பள்ளன்கோயில் செப்புபட்டயம் பற்றிய செய்தியில்  அப்பட்டயம்  murray  s. rajam அவர்களிடம்  இருப்பதாக  தெரிய வந்ததின் அடிபடையில்தான் ராஜம் அய்யாவைபற்றிய அறிமுகம்  எனக்கு கிடைத்தது..

சாந்தி சதனில் அவருடைய மகன்  திரு ஸ்ரீ வட்சன்  அவர்களை பார்த்தபோது தான் அய்யா அவர்கள் "சாக்கை" கிராமத்தை சேர்ந்தவர் என்று தெரியவந்தது...

 

சாக்கை  கிராமம் ..

 நாகபட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில், உம்பலசெரிக்கு, அடுத்த குக்கிராமம்ஆகும்  ..

அங்கு சென்று  அய்யாவை விசாரித்தபோது.....

 

அற்புதமான செய்தி கிடைத்தது...

 

அய்யங்கார் கிராமமான ....சாக்கை கிராமத்தில்  ,

 மற்றைய சமுதாயத்தினர் நுழைய முடியாத  நேரத்தில் ......

அனைத்து மக்களும் , நீர்நிலைகளில் நீர் எடுத்திடவும் ,

ஊரின் உள்ளே சென்று வரவும் அனுமதி அளித்து  

அன்றைய நாட்களில் "சமுதாய புரட்சி"  செய்திட்டவர்.

அவர்கள குடும்பத்தினரின்  பெருமாள்கோயில் தற்போதும்அங்கு உள்ளது .. .

அவர் வாழ்ந்த வீடு அங்குள்ளது  ....

 

வரலாற்றை நேசித்தவருக்கு .... 

வரலாற்றி இடம் வேண்டும் என்ற நோக்கில்

எங்கள் வரலாற்ற ஆர்வலர் குழுவில் ,

தெய்வத்திரு  மூத்த வழிகாட்டிகள்   என்ற இருக்கையை  ஏற்படுத்தி ...

நம்  murray s.rajam  சொந்த ஊர் -நாகப்பட்டினம் மாவட்டத்தில் , வேதாரணியம்  தாலுக்காவில் துளசாபுரம்  கிரமத்தின்   உட்கிராமமான "சாக்கை"

இவர் பிறந்த நாள்    22.11.1904

இவர் பிற்காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்தது   சென்னையில்.

 

ஆனால்  எஸ். ராஜம் அவர்கள்

பிறந்த ஊர்  மதுரை ,

இவர் பிறந்த நாள்    10.2.1919

பிற்காலத்தில் வாழ்ந்தது   சென்னையில் மூதாதையர்  வீட்டில். (41,  நடுத்தெரு கபாலீஸ்வரர் கோயில் அருகில் ,மைலாப்பூர் .

 

சற்றுசிந்திக்க வேண்டியுள்ளது...

I have no idea about your geographical location in this digitally shrunken globe

 

As I am thinking that you may not be living in India for economical logistics it will be simplar to digitise it and handle as images in the net as sharing

That will not disterb the original also. For me there is no difficulty in imaging its pages in my 12 MP camera as the contents may not run into 100 s of pages

I have abandened my scanner long ago as camera is more flexible for practical use without any loss of quality because nowadays they come with high

resolution capability suitable even for wide format banner printing

Next simplar alternate is to photo copy it and send the leaves by post .I have used this way in the Thalapuranam project of THF in which orignals were only

lendable for a short period By spending only few Rs. we are having a archivable hardcopy which may serve as a ref that does not depend on digital gadgets

சிற்பின் கைவண்ணத்தை ஆனந்த விகடன் இதழ்களில் 1940 களிலிருந்து நான் அறிவேன். அவரை ஆனந்த விகடன் எஸ் எஸ் வாசன் காலத்திலேயே ஒரு illustrator என்பதற்கு மேல் யாரும் தெரிந்து கொண்டதில்லை. இது தவறென்றால் பொக்கிஷம் என்று இன்று திரும்ப பழைய எழுத்துக்களை பிரசுரிக்கும் ஆனந்த விகடன், நிறைய புத்தகங்களை மற்ற எந்த பிரபல பிரசுரங்களையும் விட நேர்த்தியாகவும், நியாயமான விலையிலும் விற்கும் ஆனந்த விகடன், சிற்பியின் கோவில் சித்திரங்களையும், மிக மிக அருமையான மாலியின் அவர்கால சங்கீத வித்வான்களின் சித்திரங்களையும் வரைந்த வற்றை புத்தகமாக ஆக்கியிருக்கலாம். எதாக இருந்தால் என்ன? என்ன வசதி இருந்தால் என்ன? தன் வீட்டின் இருக்கும் பொருட்களின் மதிப்பு அறிய வேண்டாமா?
