UmamaheswarampiLLai to start Karanthai Tamil Sangam that
eventually became Pulavar kallUri. Suuluur Kauthaman, his classmate
M. Rajendran (who is here and was VC, Tamil university) all went
there.
Also, Kavignar Tamizhanban, Na. Raamanaathan was their teacher.
Bharathidaasan wrote an autobiography ahaval to Pulavar Na.

with the son of Kavignar Bharathidasan, Mannarmannan,
he mentioned about his wedding & Kovai Aiyamuthu's friendship.
My relatives, VeLLakkiNar Gnanambikai Mills (VCV, VCS family),
Coimbatore
upon the request of people like Kova Kizhar (C. M. Ramachandran
Chettiar,
C. K. Subramaina Mudaliar, ...) donated 100 acres of land in
Coimbatore to start Perur Pulavar Kalluuri. If my memory is
right, it was the second official Pulavar kalluuri in TN,
first one being Mayilam kalluuri.

The sad thing about Tamil scholarship is due to change in Times,
and Attitudes, these great Pulavar kalluuris are getting
converted to regular Arts colleges. I think that will be the
end of real Tamil scholarship, study of Bhakti litearture,
and Tamil grammars in a traditional way from monolingual
gurus, who are immersed in completely Tamil scholarship :-(
Linguistics, this, that, ... will be there - but will there be
true tribe of Tamil pulavars? if Tamil pulavar kalluuris
are closed, I quite doubt it.

There was lot of cultural politics and revolution happening in Tamil
mind when large scale literacy via Govt. schools happened to
call Tamil castes and communities. Earlier it was just 2 or 3 % or
so, mostly made use of by the Brahmins in the British rule.
Their mastered English skills, and these folks became envy
of many in other parts of India. But they, for the most part,
started neglecting Tamil, according to Kalki - read his essay
"enGkaL tamizmozi". The great UVS, Bharatiar (who took the
lead from kappal OTTiya tamizan - VaUCi & brought Vandemaataram,
Bharatmaata ki je
to Tamil Nadu), ... were an exception. The real power was with
the Mylapore lawyers' lobby.
At Madurai, Sethupathis, the Rajah of Ramnad, supported great
scholarly
work. Esp. in Madurai Tamil Sangam. the Centamiz journal they ran
with Pulavars under the editorship Raghavaiyangars (cousins),
Tiru. Narayanaiyangar, is still unmatched. Nii. Kandasaamip PiLLai
and others started Tamizppozil to make corrrections in what
is published in Centamiz. Both sides worked very hard and such
quality is missing from Tamil Nadu colleges and universities today.
No more Vaiyapurippillai, PaavaaNar, TPM, Auvai, Muva, Agestialingam,
VIS, ... any longer :-(
