சிலப்பதிகாரம்  காட்டும் மதுரை

(மதுரை அகில இந்திய வானொலியில் 2.5.1996 அன்று காலை 8.30 மணிக்கு ஒலிபரப்பான என் உரை) 

2000 ஆண்டுக் காலமாகத் தலைநகர் என்ற தகுதியிலிருந்து மாறாமல் இன்றுவரை சிறந்து விளங்கும் பெருமைக்குரியது மதுரை மாநகரம்.

இளங்கோவடிகள் தான் எழுதிய சிலப்பதிகாரக் காப்பியத்தில் இந்நகரின் பெயரால் மதுரைக் காண்டம் என்று ஒரு காண்டத்திற்குப் பெயர் சூட்டியுள்ளார்.  

'பொற்றேர்ச் செழியன் மதுரை மாநகர்' என்று இளங்கோவடிகள் குறிப்பிடும் மதுரை பாண்டியனின் தலைநகரம் ஆகும். இந்நகரம் வையையாற்றின் தென்கரையில் இருந்தது. கண்ணகியும் கோவலனும் கவுந்தியுடன் சேர்ந்து மரப்புணை மூலம் வையையைக் கடந்து 'வானவர் உறையும் மதுரை' வந்து சேர்ந்ததாகவே இளங்கோவடிகள் பாடியுள்ளார். 

ஆற்றின் கரையில் இருந்தமையால் மதுரை நகரம் வளம் மிகுந்ததாகத் திகழ்ந்தது. பலவகை மரங்கள் செழித்து ஓங்கி இருந்தன. பூக்களும் மிகுதியாக இருந்தன. மதுரையின் புறநகர்ப் பகுதிகளில் வயல்களும், சோலைகளும், ஓடைகளும், ஏரிகளும், தென்னந் தோப்புகளும், வாழைத் தோட்டங்களும், கமுக மரங்களும் நிறைந்திருந்தன. வையையின் கரையெங்கும் குரா, மகிழம், கோங்கம், வேங்கை, வெண்கடம்பு, சுரபுன்னை, மஞ்சாடி, மருதம், உச்சிச் செலுந்தி, செருந்தி, சண்பகம், பாதிரி முதலிய மரங்கள் ஓங்கி உயர்ந்திருந்தன. மதுரையிலிருந்து வந்த தென்றல் கழுநீர், செண்பகம், மாதவி, மல்லிகை, முல்லை, முதலிய பூக்களின் மணத்தோடு வந்ததாகப் பாணர் குழு கோவலனிடம் கூறுகிறது. வையைக் கரையின் அகப்பகுதியில் எங்கும் குருக்கத்தியும், செம்முல்லையும், முசுட்டையும், மல்லிகையும், வெள்ளை நறுந்தாழியும், வெட்பாலையும், பெருங்கையாலும், குட்டிப் பிடவமும், இருவாட்சியும் மலர்ந்து ஒன்றோடொன்று பின்னிப் பிணைந்து இருந்தன. மதுரைக் கோட்டையைச் சூழ்ந்திருந்த அகழியில் குவளையும், ஆம்பலும், கமலமும் மலர்ந்திருந்தன. முருக்க மலரிதழ்கள் வையைக் கரையில் உதிர்ந்து கிடந்தன. வையை ஆற்றுநீரோடு இடையறாது முல்லையரும்புகள் வந்தன. 

மதுரை நகர அங்காடியில் பல்வேறு பொருட்களின் வாணிபம் நிகழ்ந்தது. வையம், சக்கரங்களுடைய வண்டி, தேர்மொட்டு, கவசம், அங்குசம், தோற்கைத்தளம், அரைப்பட்டிகை, வளைதடி, சாமரை, மூன்று வகைக் கேடயங்கள், குத்துக்கோல்கள், செப்புப் பொருட்கள், வெண்கலப் பொருட்கள், கயிற்றால் முடிந்து செய்யப்பட்ட பொருட்கள், கிடையால் புனையப்பட்ட மாலை, ஈர்வாள், தந்தத்தைக் கடைந்து செய்யப்பட்டவை, வாசனைப்  புகைக்குரியவை, மயிர்ச்சாந்து செய்தற்குரிய பொருட்கள், பூமாலைகள் முதலியவை அங்காடி வீதியில் விற்கப்பட்டமையைக் கோவலன் கண்டு வந்தான். அங்காடியில் அப்பவணிகர் அப்பம் சுடுவதால் எழுந்த புகையின் மணத்தோடு தென்றல் கலந்து வீசியதென்று மதுரைத் தென்றலின் மணம் பற்றிப் பாணர் கோவலனிடம் பேசுகின்றனர். 

ஒன்பது வகை மணிகளும், நான்கு வகைப் பொன்னும், பல்வேறு ஆடைவகைகளும், பல்வகைக் கூலங்களும், மிளகும் மதுரையில் விற்கப்பட்டன. கோவலன் இரத்தினக் கடைத்தெருவையும், பொற்கடைத் தெருவையும், அறுவைக் கடைவீதியையும், கூலவீதியையும் சுற்றிக் கண்டுவந்தான். 

சிவன், திருமால், முருகன், கொற்றவை, பலதேவன் முதலிய தெய்வங்களை வழிபடும் இடங்கள் மதுரையில் இருந்தன. காலைமுரசம் சிவனுக்குரிய கோயிலிலும், முருகன் கோட்டத்திலும், பலதேவன் நகரத்திலும், திருமால் நியமத்திலும் ஒலித்தன. கண்ணகி மதுரையை விட்டு வெளியேறும் போது கொற்றவை கோயில் வாசலில் பொற்றொடியைத் தகர்க்கிறாள். மதுரையின் கிழக்குப் புறநகர்ப் பகுதியில் இயக்கி என்னும் பெண்தெய்வத்திற்கு வழிபாடு நடந்தது. மாதிரி இத்தெய்வத்திற்குப் பாற்சோறு படைத்து மீண்டு வரும் பொழுது கவுந்தியைப் புறஞ்சிறை மூதூரில் கண்டு அடிபணிகிறாள். மதுரையின் அகநகர்ப் பகுதியில் பிற சிறுதெய்வங்கட்கும் வழிபாடுகள் இருந்தன. கோவலன் பொற்கொல்லனிடம் சிலம்பைக் கொடுத்தனுப்பிய பின்னர் ஒரு தேவகோட்டச் சிறையகம் புகுந்து இருந்தான். மதுராபதி என்னும் காவல் தெய்வம் ஒன்று மதுரையில் இருந்தது என்று சிலப்பதிகாரம் கூறுவதால் அத்தெய்வத்திற்குரிய வழிபாட்டிடம் ஒன்று மதுரையில் இருந்திருக்க வேண்டும். ஆதிபூதம், அரசபூதம், வணிக பூதம், வேளாள பூதம் என்ற நான்கு பூதங்கட்கும் மதுரையில் வழிபாடு நடந்தது. நகரில் எரி மண்டியவுடன் இப்பூதங்கள் தம் இருப்பிடத்தை விட்டு நீங்கின. சமண பௌத்தப் பள்ளிகளும் மதுரையில் இருந்தன. காலைமுரசம் அங்கும் சங்கோடு முழங்கியது. அந்தணர் பள்ளியும் மதுரையில் இருந்தது. கோவலனும் கண்ணகியும் மதுரையை நெருங்கிய போது நான்மறை அந்தணர் நவின்ற ஓதையும், மாதவர் ஓதி மலிந்த ஓதையும் கேட்டனர். 

கோவலன் மதுரையை விசும்பில் ஏற்றிய கொடிகளின் நிழலிலேயே சுற்றிக் கண்டு வந்தான். மதுரைக் கோட்டையிலும் கொடிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்டு இருந்தன. பொற்கடை வீதியில் நான்கு வகைப் பொன்னை இனம் பிரித்துக் காட்டும் கொடிகள் ஏற்றப்பட்டு இருந்தன. 

நகரைச் சுற்றிக் கோட்டையும், அதைச் சூழ்ந்து அகழியும், அதையடுத்துக் காவற்காடும், அதையடுத்துக் கிழக்கில் புறஞ்சிறை மூதூரும் இருந்தன. கோவலன் நகருக்குள் சென்ற போது காவற்காட்டால் சூழப்பட்ட அகழியைச் சுருங்கை வீதி வழியாகக் கடந்து யவனர் காவல் நின்ற கோட்டைவாசலை அடைந்தான். மாதரி கண்ணகியை அடைக்கலமாகப் பெற்றுக் கொண்டு நகருள் சென்ற போதும் காவற்காட்டையும் அகழியையும் கோட்டையையும் கடந்து சென்றாள். கோட்டையில் பல பொறிகள் பொருத்தப்பட்டு இருந்தன. அவையாவன:  

விற்பொறி, கருவிரல் ஊகம், கல்லுமிழ் கவண், பரிவுறு வெந்நெய், பாகடு குழிசி, காய்பொன் உலை, கல்லிடு கூடை, தூண்டில், தொடக்கு, ஆண்டலை அடுப்பு, கவை, கழு, புதை, புழை, ஐயவித்துலாம், கைபெயர் ஊசி, சென்றெறி சிரல், பன்றி, பணை, எழு, சீப்பு, முழுவிரற் கணையம், கோல், குந்தம், வேல் முதலியனவாம். 

நான்மாடக்கூடல் என்ற பெயர் மதுரை நகருக்கு உரியதாய்ச் சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் பயின்று வருவதால் நான்கு புறமும் கோபுரங்களுடன் கூடிய வாயிலைப் பெற்றது மதுரை நகரம் என்ற செய்தியைக் குறிப்பாக அறிகிறோம். கண்ணகி கீழ்த்திசை வாயில் கணவனொடு புகுந்தாள்; மேற்றிசை வாயில் தனியளாய்ப் பெயர்ந்தாள். 

கோட்டைக்கு வெளியே இருந்த புறஞ்சிறை மூதூரில் சமயப் பெரியோர் தங்கி இருந்தனர். கவுந்தியடிகள் கோவலனிடம் இல்வாழ்வில் ஈடுபட்டோர்க்குப் புறஞ்சிறை மூதூர் தங்குதற்கேற்ற இடமன்று; என்று கூறி அவனை அகநகருக்குள் சென்று தங்குமாறு அறிவுறுத்துகிறாள். 

காவற்கணிகையர் வீதி ஒன்றும், ஆடற்கூத்தியராகிய பதியிலார்க்கு இருபெரு வீதிகளும், அங்காடி வீதியும், இரத்தினக்கடை வீதியும், பொற்கடை வீதியும், அறுவைக்கடை வீதியும், கூலக்கடை வீதியும், நால்வேறு வருணத்தார்க்குரிய தனித்தனித் தெருக்களும் அகநகரில் இருந்தன. நகரில் புகையழல் மண்டிய போது அரசர், அந்தணர், வணிகர், வேளாளர் ஆகிய நான்கு வருணத்தார்க்குரிய தெருக்களிலும் இருந்த மக்கள் கலக்கம் அடைந்தனர். ஆய்ச்சியர் குடியிருப்பு ஒன்றும் அகநகரில் இருந்தது. மாதரி தம் இனத்தவரின் குடியிருப்புப பகுதியில் பூவல் ஊட்டிய புனைமாண் பந்தர் காவற்சிற்றிலில் கண்ணகியையும், கோவலனையும் குடியேற்றினாள். இடையர்களின் இருக்கை கட்டுவேலி சூழ்ந்ததாகவும், தாதெரு மன்றத்தை உடையதாகவும் இருந்தது. 

குறுந்தெருக்களும், பெருந்தெருக்களும் அமைந்திருந்த பாங்கில் இடையில் முச்சந்திகளும், நாற்சந்திகளும், முடுக்குகளும் இருந்தன. இவ்வாறு பதியெழுவறியாப் பண்புமேம்பட்ட மதுரை மூதூர் மாநகர் பற்றிச் சிலப்பதிகாரம் கூறுகிறது.

 actually i wanted to raise this question on madhirai and madhurai; if it was known as madhirai all through sangam period, then certainly in silapathikaram time it was called madhurai? as the name of this section is madhurai.

so the cunning and foxy "aryans" changed the name even before silapathikaram was written?

எனக்கு அந்த நாகரிகம் பிடிபடுவதில்லை.

(1) வட இந்தியாவில் காயம் என்ற சொல்லை விண்ணுக்கு வழக்கில் இருந்தது போலும்.

கதிர் காயும் அண்டம் = காயம்.  இச்சொல்லை, விண் என்ற பொருளில் புறநானூறு

போன்ற நூல்களில் காண்கிறோம். காயா என்பதும் விண்ணின் நிறமுள்ள மலர்கள்

கொண்ட மரம், கண்ணபிரானின் நிறம் காசாம்பூ. ஆ-காசம் என்ற வடசொல் இதனாற்

பிறந்த சொல்.

தமிழ் மக்கள் வாய்மொழியில் இரண்டு உயிர்களுக்கு நடுவில்  இடம்பெறும் / த்  /  'dh' என்று தான் உச்சரிக்கப்படும். 

தமிழைப் பொறுத்தவரை அது ஒரு allophone = மாற்றொலி; அதாவது ஒலி மாறுபட்டாலும் பொருள் மாற்றம் இருக்காது.

இது மொழியியல் கொள்கைகளில் ஒன்று. (உலகத்து மொழிகளுக்கெல்லாம் பொதுவான கொள்கை; தனிப்பட்ட கொள்கை அன்று.) 

வடமொழியின் தன்மை வேறு. அங்கே / th ,dh / இரண்டும் ஒலியன்கள் (ஒலி மாறினால் பொருள் மாறுபடும்.)

இது தமிழ், வடமொழி இரண்டிற்கும் இடையே ஆன அடிப்படை வேறுபாடு  

சிலப்பதிகாரம் சொல்வது 'மதுரை' 

சங்கப் பாடல்களில் நான் மதுரை மட்டும் தான் பார்த்திருக்கிறேன்.

இரண்டுக்கும் இடைப்பட்ட காலத்தில் பதினெண்கீழ்க்கணக்கு நூல்கள், திருமந்திரம், காரைக்கால் அம்மையார் பாடல்கள் தோன்றி உள்ளன.(கருத்து வேறுபாடுகள் உண்டு.)

பிராமிக் கல்வெட்டுகளிலும், பிற்காலச் சோழர் கல்வெட்டுக்களிலும் காணப்படும் 'மத்திரை' அக்கால மக்களின் பேச்சு வழக்கு என்று கருதுகிறேன். ஏனென்றால் கல்வெட்டுக்கள் பல பேச்சுவழக்குச் சொற்களை எடுத்தாள்வது கல்வெட்டுக்களில் காணக் கிடைக்கிறது.

(திருவிளையாடற்புராணம், ஏபிஎன் சினிமா). இதனை அப்பர் தேவாரத்தில் காண்கிறோம்.

அற்று அன்றி அம் தண் மதுரைத் தொகை ஆக்கினானும்,
தெற்று என்ற தெய்வம் தெளியார் கரைக்கு ஓலை தெண்நீர்ப்
பற்று இன்றிப் பாங்கு எதிர்வின் ஊரவும், பண்பு நோக்கில்,

i was trying to find out what megasthenes said about madurai; (i remember reading about it in indian ancient history -600BC to 100 AD, when i was trying for IAS some decades back)

i googled around but could not find the refernce; (obviously original Indica is lost like aindhiram but references are available about korkai and madurai in greek literature ). if somebody has some links or information please revert

பலர் பெயர் காண்கிறோம். மதிரை என்று இருந்து மதுரை எனக் காலப்போக்கில்

ஏடுபெயர்ப்போரால் மாறி இருக்க்லமாம். அதேபோல, சேரர் தலைநகர் வஞ்சி

என ஆசிரியர்கள் பெயர் முன்னால் இருந்து, பிற்காலத்தில் கருவூர் என மாறியிருக்கலாம்.

கிரையர்ஸன் என நினைக்கிறேன். அவர் வேதமும் இவ்வாறே காலப்போக்கில்

மாறியிருக்கும் என்றார். காஷ்மீர இலக்கியத்தை ஒப்பிட்டு. ஆனால், வேதவியல் 

நிபுணர்கள் விட்சல் போன்றோர் அதை மறுப்பர். “வேதம் மாறாதது” என்பர்.

கிரையர்ஸனும் சரியாக இருக்கக்கூடும். தேடிக் கிடைத்தால் தருவேன்.

சிலப்பதிகாரத்தில் மதுரை என்ற சொல் ஏராளமாக இருக்கிறது.

ஆனால், அகவல் அடிகளில் மேலோ கீழோ -இ எதுகை உள்ளது.

எனவே, மதிரை என இருந்து மதுரை ஆனது போலும்.

எதுகை < எதிகை; குதுரெ (கன்னடம்) < குதிரை [1], ... போல மதுரை < மதிரை.

மதிராந்தகன் என்ற காசுகளைப் படித்து நாகசாமி சொல்லியது நினைவுக்கு

வருகிறது.

அக்குறிப்பு  எக்காலத்தில்  கிடைக்கத் தொடங்குகிறது என்பதையும் காண வேண்டும்.

தமிழகத்தில் வைதீகப் பரவலுக்குப் பிறகு அது தொடர்பான கதைகளும், குறிப்புகளும் தமிழகத்தின் வரலாற்றுடன் இணைகின்றது.

அரசர்களும் தங்கள்  குலத்தை ஏதோ ஒன்றுடன் அக்னி, சந்திர, சூரிய என்றெல்லாம் தொடர்புப்படுத்தி பெருமிதம் கொள்ளும் நிலை ஏற்பட்டது.

 'துவராபதி வளநாடு'  என்ற குறிப்பின் காலம் அறிய விரும்புகிறேன்.

படிகை > படுகை (உப்புப்படுகை), எதிகை > எதுகை, குதிரை > குதுரெ (கன்னடம்), .... போல,

மதிரை > மதுரை என ஆகிவிட்டது. பல ஜாதியாரும் சேர்ந்து செய்த மிக மெல்லிசான காலமாற்றம்.

பல நூற்றாண்டு எடுத்திருக்கும். நமக்குக் கல்வெட்டுகள், செப்பேடுகள், காசுகள் (மதிராந்தகன் காசு

எனப் படித்த நாகசாமி) ... கிடைப்பதால் மதிரை ஒரிஜினல் > மதுரை என தெரிகிறது.

மதிரை மதுரை ஆனது போல், எதிர்கை என்னும் ப்ராசஸ் தரும் பலன் ஆகிய எதிகை இன்று எதுகை

என அழைக்கப்படுகிறது.

அது ஒரு கல்வெட்டுத் தொடர். 

திட்டவட்டமாக 7ம் நூற்றாண்டிற்குப் பிற்பட்டது. 

நீங்கள் சொல்வது போல் வைதீகம் காலூன்றிய பிறகு தான்........ அப்படிப் பார்த்தால் சங்க காலத்திலேயே வைதீகம் தமிழகத்தில் கடைவிரித்ததும் உண்மை தானே. 

அதை விட்டு விட்டு  அடுத்த குறிப்பிற்கு வருவோம். 

இளவேனில் வருகையை சேரன் உள்ளிவிழா என்று கொண்டாடினான். அப்போதிருந்து இப்போது வரை ஹோலியில் வண்ணங்களின் ஆட்சி. 

பாண்டியன் மதுரையில் வையைப் புதுவெள்ளத்தில் வண்ணங்களின் ஆட்சி எப்படி வந்தது? பரிபாடல்களைப் பாருங்கள்.

  சோழன் மட்டும் இளவேனிலை இந்திர விழாவாகக் கொண்டாடுவதேன்? 

மூவேந்தருக்குள் இருக்கும் இந்த அடிப்படை வேறுபாடு நமக்குச் சொல்லும் பாடம் என்ன?

ஆமாம்.  வைதீகம் ராசசூய வேள்விகள் செய்த வேந்தர்கள் மூலம் 2000 ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்னர் தமிழர் மத்தியிலிருந்ததில் எனக்கு மாற்றுக் கருத்துகள் இல்லை.

அதை  உறுதிப்படுத்த பண்டைய கல்வெட்டுகளில்  மதுரை குறித்து ஆராய்வதுதான் சரியான வழி என எனக்குத் தோன்றுகிறது

களப்பிரர் காலத்தை முழுமையாக அறியக் கல்வெட்டுகள் இருந்ததில்லை.

1976 வெளியீடு  களப்பிரர் வரலாறு என்ற  நூல் மயிலை சீனி. வேங்கடசாமி எழுதிய நூல் வரை அந்த நிலை.

அதன் பின்னர் கடந்த 40 ஆண்டுகளில் கிடைத்தனவற்றில் மதுரை குறித்து கல்வெட்டுகள்  என்ன கூறுகின்றன என அத்துறையில் இருப்போர் கூற இயலும்.
