கஞ்சமலை இரும்பு ஏன் எடுக்கப்படவில்லை.
நல்ல தரமான இரும்பு, ஏராளமாகக் கிடைக்கிறது என்று அந்த காலத்திலேயே சொல்லியிருக்கிறார்கள், என்றாலும் கஞ்ச மலை இரும்பு ஏன் வெட்டி எடுக்கப்படவில்லை. பலரும் கேட்கும் கேள்வி இது. மேக்னடைட், ஹெமடைட் இவையிரண்டும்தான் நம் நாட்டில் கிடைக்கும் முக்கிய இரும்பு தாதுகள்.இரண்டுமே இரும்புஆக்சைடுகள். மேக்னடைட் காந்தத்தால் ஈர்க்கப்படும் ; பொடி செய்தால் கருப்பாக இருக்கும். இதில் இரும்பு 78% ௮ளவு இருக்கும். ஹெமடைட் காந்தத்தால் ஈர்க்கப்படாது ; பொடி செய்தால் அடர் சிகப்பு நிறத்தில் இருக்கும். இதில் இரும்பு 70% இருக்கும்.
கர்நாடகம், ஆந்திரம், கோவா , ஓடிஷா பீகார் , வங்கம் ஆகிய மாநிலங்களில் ஹெமடைட் கிடைக்கிறது. தமிழ் நாடு , கேரளம், சத்திஸ்கர் போன்ற மாநிலங்களில் மேக்னடைட் கிடைக்கிறது.. கஞ்சமலையில் கிடைப்பது மேக்னடைட் தாது தான். இவை எல்லாப் பகுதிகளிலும் மேக்னடைட் தாது குவார்ட்ஸ் எனும் கனிமத்தோடு பட்டை பட்டையாக சேர்ந்தே கிடைக்கிறது. இந்த தாதுவிற்கு அதனால்தான் BANDED MAGNETITE QUARTZITE என்று பெயர். இதில் இரும்பின் அளவு 27% முதல் 35% வரை உள்ளது. இது ஒன்றும் மிகக் குறைந்த அளவு அல்ல. சில நாடுகளில் 2௦% உள்ள தாதுவும் கூட பயன் படுத்தப் படுகிறது. ஆனால் கர்நாடகம், ஆந்திரம், கோவா , ஓடிஷா பீகார் போன்ற மானிலங்களில் உள்ள ஹெமடைட் தாதுக்களில் 6௦% மேல் இரும்பு உள்ளது. எனவேதான் அந்தப் பகுதிகளில் இரும்புத்தாது எடுக்கப்பட்டு, பிலாய், துர்காபூர் , டாட்டா நகர் போன்ற இடங்களில் உள்ள இரும்பு ஆலைகளில் இரும்பு உற்பத்தி செயப்படுகிறது. பிற்காலத்தில் தேவைப் படும்போது தமிழ் நாட்டில் உள்ள BANDED MAGNETITE QUARTZITE தாதுவை பயன்படுத்திக் கொள்ளலாம்.
திருவண்ணாமலை பகுதியில் உள்ள வேடியப்பன் மலை, உச்சிமலை போன்ற மலைகளிலும் நம் கஞ்சமலையில் உள்ளது போன்ற BANDED MAGNETITE QUARTZITE தாதுப் படிவங்கள் உள்ளன. அண்மையில் வேடியப்பன் மலை தாதுவை வெட்டியெடுக்க தனியார் நிறுவனம் ஒன்று முன் வந்தது. உள்ளூர் மக்களின் எதிர்ப்பு காரணமாக அந்தப் பணி தொடங்கப்படவில்லை.
இனி, பறங்கிப்பேட்டையில் துவங்கப்பட்டPORTO NOVO IRON WORKS ஆலையில், கஞ்சமலை தாதுவை பயன்படுத்தித் தரமான இரும்பு தயாரிக்கப் பட்டது. ஆனால் இரண்டு காரணங்களால் அந்த ஆலை 1877ஆம் ஆண்டு மூடப்பட்டது.
முதலாவதாக , பொருளாதார சிக்கல்கள்
இரண்டாவதாக கரி பஞ்சம். ஒரு டன் இரும்பை உருக்க நான்கு டன் மரக்கரி தேவைப்பட்டது. ஒரு நாளைக்கு ஒரு ஏக்கர் பகுதியில் மரங்கள் வெட்டப்பட்டன. இதை கம்பனியும் பின்னர் அரசும் ஏற்கவில்லை.
1878 ஆம் ஆண்டு , இந்த ஆலையின் புகைபோக்கிகளை , சிதம்பரம் கிழக்கு கோபுரத்திலிருந்து பார்த்ததாக அன்றைய கலெக்டர் H.GARSTIN தான் தொகுத்த A MANUAL OF SOUTH ARCOT DISTRICT இல் பக்கம் 406 இல் கூறியுள்ளார். ( கீழே காண்க )
The view from the top of the eastern gopuram, (which is
said to have been re-built by Pachiappa Mudali of Madras
renown) is a remarkably fine one. On all sides the stretches
of paddy fields interspersed with clumps of trees give an
exceedingly park-like appearance to the scene. On the
west the whole pagoda, with much of the town beyond, is
seen at a glance, while on the east the view is bounded by
the sea which is distant about 7 miles. The tall chimney of
the Porto Novo iron works, and the mouth of the Coleroon
