If I give an English date How do we find the Tamil date and month and year?

Is any research was done based on this scenario?

Any information related to this is highly  appreciated.

no solution already exists. 

so any one can start the research. can start an open source project may be in any familiarised computer language.

I am amazing, still we didn't standardised this Tamil calendar dilemma.

Tamil society made lot of conferences but they are not concentrate the important one their tamil date. already some solutions available for Korean lunar calendar and Chinese calendar. but no solution available for Tamil calendar.

You are right: To *design* the algorithm 20 data points may not sufficient, but I requested them only to evaluate the result matches your expectation/definition. I will share the calculator logic in plain English or probably in a spreadsheet.

I really love how you have used this prompt to snapshot history (set exact milestones not arbitrary dates.) double thanks.

Will work on this today tomorrow.

This Math Trick Will Let You Find The Day Of The Week For Any Date


One of my fellow contributors here recently wrote a post about leap years and why we have them. This reminded me of modular arithmetic and the formula for calculating the day of the week for any date in history.

We use modular arithmetic all the time. It's useful for situations where you want to start over, time being the most obvious. Say it's 9 o'clock. What time will it be 5 hours from now? Unless you're in the military you'd say 2 o'clock, right? That's modular arithmetic, the modulus being 12. To add hours, we simply add them together: 9+5=14, and then subtract 12 to get 2. Months work the same: 12 months means that 5 months after September is the second month of the next year (February). Ditto for minutes (modulo 60) and hours (arithmetic modulo 60).

In general, given a positive integer n, we have the relation of congruence modulo n: an integer a is equivalent to its remainder when divided by n. So there are only n distinct classes of integers modulo n, namely the n remainders 0,1,2,...(n-1). We can add these together just like we do hours or months, subtracting off n if the sum of two remainders exceeds n.

Arithmetic modulo 2 is all about odd vs. even. The even integers correspond to remainder 0 when dividing by 2, and the odds have remainder 1 when dividing by 2. The two remainders may then be added, keeping in mind this relationship: 0+0=0, 0+1=1, 1+0=1, 1+1=0. That last one happens because 1+1=2, and so we subtract 2 to get the right remainder class (0). These sums are simply a formal algebraic way of saying that even + even = even, odd + even = odd, and odd + odd = even. Computers use mod 2 addition all the time since they store numbers in binary.

So what about days of the week? That is arithmetic modulo 7 of course and there is a formula that will give you the day of the week for any date in history. It's called Zeller's formula and here it is:

The various terms are defined as follows: d is the day of the week, where 0 = Sunday, 1 = Monday ... 6 = Saturday; k is the day of the month; D is the last two digits of the year; C is the century, obtained as the first two digits of the year. The brackets [ • ] correspond to the greatest integer function, which is the largest integer less than or equal to the number inside. So, for example [π]=3. The number m is the month, but there's a catch: we start counting with March = 1 so that January and February are the 11th and 12th months of the previous year.

Let's do some examples. I'll pick a date we know: December 7, 1941 was a Sunday. The corresponding numbers are: k = 7, D = 41, C = 19, m = 10. Then we get

I chose that date at random, and it turned out to be a Friday the 13th. Odd. Note the shift in years since January of 2045 is the 11th month of 2044 under this scheme.

Note that this formula only works for the Gregorian calendar, instituted by Pope Gregory VIII in 1582. Before that the Julian calendar was in effect. The protestant world resisted adoption of a Catholic innovation; indeed, the British empire (including the U.S.) didn't switch to the Gregorian calendar until 1752. The difference involves how leap years get tabulated; the Julian calendar made every fourth year a leap year, leading to an overcompensation for the extra few hours more than 365 days a year actually is. The Gregorian calendar fixes this by making years divisible by 100 non-leap years, unless the year is divisible by 400 in which case it is a leap year (so, 2000 was a leap year, but 2100 will not be). There is a Julian calendar formula that is similar.

By now you've calculated the day of the week on which you were born (mine is a Tuesday) and maybe a few others. This formula isn't too difficult to memorize if you want to bore amaze your friends at parties. Enjoy!

Great question.

Tamil calendar is Solar calendar.
(Malayalam too), since the month starts when Sun shifts to a new Rasi.

Telugu calendar is Luni-solar.

Found this great resource "South Indian Chronological Tables" published 1889 by Krishnaswamy Naidu.

It has 4 Tables and worked example for finding Tamil Year, Month and day for English date March 30, 1804 -> Rudrothkari Panguni 20

I am trying to first use the tables, but also there should be easier way to code the tables themselves computationally.

Using Krishnaswamy Naidu lookup tables, I am able to convert

the first date from  Themozhi Madam's test cases - May 10, 1857

1. From table C:
1857 April 11 was first day of Kali 4959 - Pingala varusham.
It was 101th day of the english year and serial number 0

2.From Table B, the date count of May 10 is 130 from beginning of year.

3. Subtract 101 from 130 gives 29 days.

4. From Table A, this falls in Chittirai and 29. 

SUCCESS!

Let me check a few more dates, first by hand, to get an intuition, 
and try to either see how to avoid look up tables by figuring out pattern in the tables?

I also have python code for calculating planetary positions and ideally sun position should give
tamil month and date, but since the calendar is an approximation and uses integer conversion, 
they adjust using different days for some months.

We have to program the conventions from an earlier era or use lookup tables. Let me think some more.

Time to get some sleep.

Since one example is not considered SUCCESS, I tried the second date

1885 December 28 - given Markazhi 15

From Table C: year began on 12th April - 102th day of english year., Serial number 1.
From Table B: December 28 is the 362th day of the year
Subtract 362-102=260, add serial 1=261
From Table A: 246 days are accounted until Karthigai.
Remaining 15 days in Markazhi.

Markazhi 15.

SUCCESS.

Now I can think of coding the look up tables. I have some idea to make it simpler.

One discrepancy, According to Naidu tables, Kali year is 4987 not 4986 so either my understanding of his rules are wrong or he is wrong or the webpage is wrong,

Please see my earlier two threads with examples of converting two dates using Naidu tables.
Today I will try to make some time to work on this and provide an excel version of the table if possible.
I wanted to avoid the look up table and use astronomical calculation, but have not found the key or logic on
why same Tamil month may have different days. That is Tamil calculation is not standard leap year once in four year,
instead it alternates, it can be in 3 year or 4 year. Also I found out that Tamil months are Nirayana, so Chithirai has shifted from
March to April over a thousand years!

 My answer (not arrogant) stance is reinventing the wheel and rediscovering the solar system are
ways to truly understand. That is the use.

Rediscovering (calculating for yourself) is one way to understand the subject thoroughly.

This is a short book, so better to read it end to end.

Sewell/Dixit is thorough and exhaustive, and may be accurate.

I think I got the idea on why some days get shifted. There is no concept of leap adjustment. 
If the month beginning (sun entering a Rasi) happens after sunset,
then the month beginning is moved to next day! This is the one that can allow us not to need look up table, let me try.

No I have not converted table B or C to excel

Instead I am thinking to infer a rule to avoid them. 

That is we need a formula to generate table C which essentially shows on what day  Tamil new year (mesha sankranti) will fall and how
Manyth day of English year it will be.

Also In Tamil there is no concept of leap year but shifting of days to next morning if Surya Pravesam happens after sunset

using seemonkey i created the html table. Raw typing method follows. 

Ok let allow to create the excel sheet on google shared document, First we finish the accurate method of chronological tables based caluculation.

see already created software for year 2018 availt  https://thanithamizhakarathikalanjiyam.github.io/ttak_date_time. before testing computer set to 2018 year. But this project is droped, due to lack of knowledge about Tamil calendar.

I can progtammatize table a and b easily and we can probably input table c from 1850 to 2050


True we cannot do calendar without implementing astronomy

Actually the Tamil solar calendar is easy because 
It is no adjusted (nirayana) and only needs sun and earth calculation

No, they do not, that is the issue.

My understanding is that Solar months start when Sun enters new Rasi, but they are delayed to next day, if the entrance is after sunset.

That is, When new month begins after sunset on a day, it is moved to next day and extra day is added to current month. 

I did not see this explicit rule anywhere since I dont have access to books where this is described. But I am going from data.

Right now I am getting more dates from the panchangam page to figure out the calculation correctly.

Please let us know if you are aware of the correct logic, since you bring up this question, sir (you are aware of the discrepancy)

I have created Table C - for dates from 1851-2099

This is available as a new sheet called "Tamil New Year Dates 1851-2099" in your shared sheet.

Basically this table has the English date that corresponds to the Tamil New Year dates (Chittirai 1)
and which weekday it falls on.

This was created programmatically crawling from the panchangam site.

I will use program to use this table along with Table A and B to translate.
Later we can find a way to generate this table from astronomical calculation.

Correct. The easiest and the best (if not computationally) optimized way is to use a mapping table (not algorithm or formula)

Also if the intent is to look at historical dates from British records, be cautious of years 1750-1752 when there is a jump in months and dates and shift from Julian or old style Gregorian to new Gregorian dates.

All said and done, there is no real year numbering. Shalivahana shakapta is again a brahmanical and royal usage, probably a mimic of vikram era. So where the Tamil years number? . Thiruvalluvar aandu?

Coming to the dates issue, the almanac that we use is a mix of solar and lunar calendars. In fact, it started as a lunar calendar and evolved into a sidereal calendar.
As in astrology, the original elliptic was divided into 12 parts. Just as in astrology, the parts were initially unequal and with visible monitoring (possible in night and marked by moon's movement) the 12 months were based on full moon days. That naming still follows.

Hindu astronomical calendars overcame the difference between a year of 12 lunar months and apparent shift of equinox /seasons by adhik masa ( thirteenth month or black days).

Slowly with ability to calculate and record, it was found that apparent speed of sun and moon varies over the annum span. ( caused by the elliptical path with sun in one focus out of two focii). Then the elliptic was formakised in 12 equal parts of 30 degrees. With apparent variation of sun's traversing speed, each maasa was found to be a fractional number of days. Typical values are: +0.9, +1.4, +1.6, +1.5, +1.0, +0.5, -0.1 -0.5, -0.6, -0.5, -0.2, +0.3, (accurate to one decimal place). This adds up +5.3 giving a total of 365.3 days ( in two digits it is 365.28) matching with our current understanding of the length of a year. Thus leap year is automatically included!.

Now a day starts with sunrise and daytime (suntime) ends with sunset. Though each day is 60 naazhigai, the day and night time are different. ( I have forgotten a Tamil solvazhakku giving the reduced night and day time. Google doesnot show. Using that, one can say the extra day time and night time in months!)

If the start of the next span (entering a rasi as per calculation) is in night then that fraction is lost in this year and added to current month and normally gained within a cycle of next seven years. Thus tamil months (from above fractions) are rounded fractions losing and gaining days.

The Tamil wiki is truly impressive even though the monthwose corrections are average (cannot be used as is, we need astronomical entrance and sunset at location in order to determine isnit not?

Thank you for the hard work, and meticulousness, Themozhi.

I collected New Year dates from 1801-2099 from the panchang site into a spreadsheet tab.

Upon further reading of the Indian Calendric System book's excellent intro (which needs to translated into a Tamil article),
Indian Calendric System (1998 publication)
Govt of India book on calendars, I finally understood the astronomical basis for the 
New Year beginning and how to set the date to next date on sunset.

The book has full description of solar and lunisolar years and exact data for 20 year period, that gave me
the clues. Basically, in 1972, new year was born on 13apr72 at 1300 hours and hence tamil new year is same day (before sunset)
In 1973, you add 6 hours and 8 minutes, (because 365.25 days, the 0.25 days adds up 6 hours)
so new year was born on 13 Apr 73 at 19:08.
since this is after sunset, Tamil New Year is set on 14 Apr 73.
For 1974, you add 6 hours and 15 minutes new year was born on 14 Apr 74 at 1-23 early morning, so
that same day is Tamil New Year.

Why 6 hours 8 minutes one time, but 6 hours 15 min the other time? That is due to slight variations in earth's orbit around the sun.
These are modeled using VSOP87 approximation in astronomy.

I have begun to implement the sun entry (Mesha Sankranti) calculation using VSOP87 model and might take me
a few days, but this will give us accurate and simple calculation for not just Chittirai but every month. Please bear with me patiently for a few days,
I will finish and then step by step explain the logic.

Be cautious about +31. As there is 14 days difference normally between jan1 and TVA-1 +31 is not a blanket. Will change to +30.

Secondly note that, in Gregorian leap years are cyclic. Not in south Indian almanac.

Given a date, also establish how many days back from today, as an additional info.

1.  I have added a sheet with Tamil Year names and mapping to Thiruvalluvar and English years

Have added English Year to Tamil Year Name now in columns T and U

formula
=mod(EngYear+53,60)+1

is the year number in 60 year cycle.

For example
2019 April 14
->
2019+53 modulo 60 = 33
33rd is Vikari

This formula is true only during Tamil year
eg from mid April 2019 to mid april 2020

for Jan-MidApr2019 you should reduce one number.

I will compile all rules into a code.

Also I am happy to share that I have figured out the astronomical way to figure out whether New Year will fall on 13th or 14th april etc
and at what time, before or after sunset.

Based on that I am able to match the numbers from Indian-calendrics book

Happy to share that I am able to figure out beginning of every Tamil month (and hence number of days in that month for that year)
accurately using no lookup tables, but pure astronomical calculations.

This is tricky because Tamil months do not have same number of days for each month across year and there is no generic leap adjustmnet.
So I had to write a 'Look at the sun by today's evening, will it have transited to new Rasi?' to determine New Month beginning.
As a result, you cannot have a one to one conversion function between english date and tamil date, Instead you need to genrate the month's 
calendar upto that date.

What I have learnt in 3 days is a lot. Thanks for the request and the guidance from all.

I will finish the program in a day or two and provide detailed writeup (in Tamil and Python :)

I might be also able to create a spreadsheet only worked out example.

1. You can simply use this sheet as a look up table.

2. We can also use this as a final verification.

It took long because, since this needed to pull 3500+ dates, I did not want to load the drikpanchangam site, so gave good gap
between one request to another request, as a responsible crawler.

It's easy to see that the topmost point corresponds to the summer solstice, while the lowest point corresponds to the winter solstice, but there is no special astronomical significance to the "crossing-point" in the Sun's analemma as seen from Earth. Nice to bring the notion of analemma. This is shape of apparent movement. More to consider is the 'apparent' speed of traverse. This is indicated by the 4 months and 8 months difference in 'crossing point'

Aside:
analemma will have different 8 shape, at different latitudes for the same local time.
Tilt and location of analemma shall vary, at the same latitude, when captured at different fixed times.
Given that there is approximately 23000 year cycle of precession, the analemma will make a complete cycle (cart-wheel), if mapped every day at same time over 23000 years!.

Consider

this year 2019 what is the TVandu = 2019 + 31 = 2040 Right.

But when the year come in take action, which day? 
  1. Thai 1 or 
  2. Chithirai 1?

Ravi i came across some statment... you said

Great question.

Tamil calendar is Solar calendar.
(Malayalam too), since the month starts when Sun shifts to a new Rasi.

Telugu calendar is Luni-solar.

Found this great resource "South Indian Chronological Tables" published 1889 by Krishnaswamy Naidu.

It has 4 Tables and worked example for finding Tamil Year, Month and day for English date March 30, 1804 -> Rudrothkari Panguni 20

I am trying to first use the tables, but also there should be easier way to code the tables themselves computationally.

Shaka year is totally different from Tamil Calculation.

Shaka and Tamil calendar are not same. My statement is Right.? or wong?

திருவள்ளுவரைப் பின்தொடர்ந்தால்   .... வேறு வழியில்லை.  

தை 1 தான் ஆண்டின் துவக்கம்.

மாற்றிக் கொள்ள விரும்பினால் பெரிய காரியமல்ல ... கேரளாவில் கொல்லம் ஆண்டு இடையில் உருவானதுதான்

Jan 1 2019?

it falls on 2040 of TVA or 2039 of TVA. Is there any standard avail in TamilNadu government? or any source avail regarding this?

கிரிகாரியன் ஆண்டு எண்ணுடன் 31 கூட்டிக் கொள்ளுங்கள்.
அரசு எந்த ஒரு குழப்பும் முறையையும்  தவிர்த்துவிட்டார்கள்.

தொடக்கம் இந்த ஜனவரியின் நடுவில் இருந்து அடுத்த ஆண்டு ஜனவரி இடையில் வரை 

ஆக 2020 + 31 = 2051 திருவள்ளுவர் ஆண்டு தை முதல் நாளே துவங்கும்.

எனவே அடுத்து வரும் ஜனவரி 13 வரை 2050 தான் 

இந்த 2019 ஜனவரி 1 திருவள்ளுவர் 2049 என்று இருந்தது.
மற்றபடி தை 1 என்று துவக்கமோ அன்று புத்தாண்டும் துவக்கம். எளிது
