Typing in Tamil using E-Kalappai or Murasu Anjal

Dear Sri.Iyengar:

It is very easy to write tamil. Please visit any one of the following
websites and download the Tamil writing software and follow the
instructions. You need to set your 'font encoding' to Unicode Tamil.
You have large selection of key board latouts. If you are familar with
English key board then set your key board to "Anjal". This way you can
type in English but the display will be in Tamil. This is called
'phoenitical' rendering.

Select "New AnjalUnicode keyboard " if you want to key in using
English keyboard layout (Qwerty keyboard). If you are familar with
Tamil type writer, then download 'eKalappai 2.0b (tamilnet99) '

You may download instead Murasu Anjal and do the same.

Fonts used : TSCu_Inaimathi and TSCu_Arulmathi.

Dear Sri. Iyengar,

If you have internet connection most of the time, then typing online
is very easy.

For example, use Suratha's online editor:
http://www.jaffnalibrary.com/tools/Unicode.htm

At the bottom, you will see two boxes.
Select "thaminglish" button.

On the top box, type "ammaa",
in the bottom box you will see அம்மா.

Like that you can type, what you want in Tamil.

செய்ய, யுனிகோடு தமிழ் உங்கள் சாதுர்ய விரல் வழியே
நளினமாய்க் கொட்டுவதைக் காணலாம்.

The following are the instructions for typing in thamiz Unicode:

There is a software called eKalappai (e-Kalappai) which you
need to use to type in thamiz Unicode. You can download
eKalappai 2.0 at:

Once you install & run it, you will see a small "K"
icon in your system tray (when typing in thamiz Unicode,
it will show a red thamiz "a" letter) In the Programs
menu it will be in a group called Tavultesoft Keyman
for Thamizha! and the program you need to run to
get eKalappai running is called Keyman.

The system tray will show K only while typing in English,
and while typing in TSCII it show the thamiz letter for
"a" in Purple/Violet, and while typing in Unicode it will
show the thamiz letter for "a" in Red.

You can switch between them using the Alt key combinations.
Alt+1 - English
Alt+2 - Unicode
Alt+3 - TSCII

Gmail is a good place to type in thamiz Unicode, compared
to Hotmail or Yahoo. You can also chat on Googletalk,
and MSN Messenger in thamiz Unicode

Let us know how it goes. Pls reply if you need further
help, and once you're able to type in thamiz Unicode,
pls send us a test email, so we can check to make
sure it worked.

As I recall, (late) Umar's Thenee font plus Mugunth's e-Kalappai
plus Tamimanam (http://tamilmanam.net) are the major

BTW, in early days it was Muthu's Murasu Anjal that drove the spirit
of seeing Tamil in e-forums (especially, tamil.net). Of course, there
are other pioneering efforts by Adami Srinivasan & K.Kalyanasundaram.

நிச்சயமாக நீங்கள் சொல்வதில் தப்பில்லை! ஆனால் குறித்த மென்பொருளைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் சில பிரச்சினை இருக்கின்றன.
அது ஒரு மொழியை நிறுவும் மென்பொருளல்லாது அது விசைப்பலகைக்கான driver ஐயும் நிறுவும். அத்தோடு குறித்த மென்பொருள், தமிழை மட்டுமல்லாமல் சிங்கள மொழியையும் கருத்திற்கொண்டு தயாரிக்கப்பட்டது.
சிங்களமொழியைப் பொறுத்தவரையில் அதற்கான ஆதரவு விண்டோஸ் 2000 இல் இல்லை. விண்டோஸ் எக்ஸ்பி இல் கூட ஒரு ஹொட் பிக்ஸ் ஐ நிறுவவேண்டிய தேவையிருக்கிறது.

அத்துடன் சியாபஸ் என்ன அணுக்கத்துடன் விநியோக்கின்றார்கள் எனக் குறிப்பிட்டால் நல்லது.

இந்த மென்பொருள் மைக்குரோசொப்ட் நிறுவனத்தின் ஆதரவுடன் தயாரிக்கப்பட்டதால் கட்டுபாடுகள் இருக்கின்றன. அது உருவாக்கப்பட்டதும் மைக்குரோசொப்ட் அங்கீகாரம் பெற்ற நிபுணர் ஒருவராலேயே!
