If you are planning a trip to Adelaide in South Australia you are inevitably going to be thinking about the beaches. There are tons of activities set up around the best beaches in the area but can you surf in Adelaide?
In the city limits of Adelaide, you are not going to find great surfing opportunities but there are some great surfing beaches just outside the metro area. If you are looking for the best surfing areas then you need to drive to the west or south of the city center if you want to think about riding substantial waves.
If you head to the west of Adelaide then West Beach and Glenelg are really close to the city as well as Semaphore and Henley. The surfing nearest the city tends to have much smaller waves and really is for beginners and longboarding enthusiasts.
Semaphore and Largs Bay are about 30 minutes northwest of Adelaide and are great locations if you are taking a surf trip as a beginner. This is because this part of the coast gets protection from many of the southerly swells meaning gentler waves.
Alternatively, book a hotel in central Adelaide such as the Oval Hotel at the Adelaide Oval. You can climb the cricket ground whilst you are there eat in their gorgeous wine bar and kitchen that has a stunning view of the ground.
This is a bay that really is for more experienced surfers as winter can bring 6-8 feet waves and even in summer, they are 3-5 feet. There are also strong rips so stick to some of the easier surfing beaches if you are a novice.
Ethel Wreck is just off the coast of Marion Bay and is about a 2-hour drive from Adelaide. The name of the surfing spot is based around a submerged wreck which causes waves to to break over the ruins when the conditions are right.
Typically waves are around 3-6 feet however in certain stormier conditions they can reach over 10 feet. Unless you are sure about the weather conditions and general area you should really only attempt this if you are very experienced.
This is a great location for a weekend getaway and somewhere that my relatives regularly travel to see nature and animals in the wild as well as a great area to eat and drink. It also has some really popular surfing spots.
The winter wave conditions are much more powerful with swells of 8 feet happening during storms. If however, you find a beach that is more sheltered you can find some more beginner-friendly locations to surf.
Most of the hotels are located on the east of the island. There is a Mecure Kangaroo Island Lodge if you want a branded hotel name or alternatively the Kangaroo Island Seaview Motel in Kingscote which is the largest town on the island.
There are plenty of people offering surfing lessons and schools around the Adelaide area who can show you the ropes. Most of the lessons for novices typically are based around the Middleton beach area.
Surf and Sun offers lessons around Middleton Beach which have great reviews. Lessons last 2 hours and as well as learning in the water they also have e-books and video lessons to help you as well.
Surfing in South Australia is super fun if you know what you are doing but if you are a newcomer to the area or are a bit of a novice then I would really recommend you follow some basic safety tips before getting in the water.
Unlike normal beaches, there are sharks off the coast in South Australia. To keep yourself safe avoid surfing around dawn or dusk or near seal colonies where they will congregate. Smart drumlines are devices that can help monitor where sharks are allowing warnings to be given to surfers.
The threat is very real and since I wrote this article sadly a 15 year old boy died at Ethel Beach on the Yorke Peninsula so being safety conscious is incredibly important when you are surfing around the Adelaide area.
The sun in Adelaide can be super strong so wearing sunscreen is a must especially if you are spending the day at the beach. I have pale Irish skin and I wear a minimum of factor 50 when I am walking in the sun and factor 100 if I am at a beach. This may seem like overkill but as many of my family have had to deal with skin cancer it really makes sense to keep yourself safe.
