Insome states, you can legally buy products like gummies, vapes cartridges, and capsules that contain a concentrated form of this compound. The popularity of products that contain delta-8 is on the rise, and you can find them everywhere, from boutique weed dispensaries to convenience store shelves.

Delta-8 produces a fuzzy, euphoric high that's said to be similar to that from marijuana, but milder. Some people also use it to ease symptoms of conditions like stress, depression, or chronic pain. But there's little research to confirm that it's effective for those purposes.

Both HHC and delta-8 bind to brain receptors that control functions in your body like sleep and memory. But the way they affect you can feel different. Users say the feeling from HHC is like that of delta-9 THC. That means you may feel a more intense high than you would from delta-8.

Delta-8 gummies are made by adding delta-8 to chewy, fruit-flavored candies. Depending on the brand, each gummy may contain 10 to 50 milligrams of delta-8. But because they aren't FDA-regulated, you can't be sure exactly how much you're getting.

You can buy vape cartridges, or carts, that are either pre-filled with a liquid containing delta-8 or can be refilled with vaping liquid. You attach the carts to a reusable vape battery, which heats them to produce vapor you inhale. Like delta-8 edibles, these aren't regulated and you can't be sure exactly what you're getting. The levels of THC they contain vary from brand to brand. Delta-8 carts often contain flavorings and other additives, including other cannabinoids.

We don't know much about the safety of vaping delta-8. But the Drug Enforcement Administration warns that vaping any substance is thought to be unsafe. That's especially true for teens and young adults whose brains are still developing.

Chemically, delta-8 THC is almost identical to the delta-9 THC in marijuana. The main difference is in the location of a bond between two of its carbon atoms. This variation means there's less attraction between delta-8 and the cannabinoid receptor found on cells in your body. That's why a delta-8 high is less intense than the high you get from delta-9.

Because delta-8 is unregulated and we don't have much research on it, we don't know what effect it will have on your brain, especially in the long run. But cannabinoids in general are thought to temporarily boost levels of the "feel-good" chemical dopamine in the brain.

Because there's been little research into delta-8, we don't know what its long-term effects might be. We know a bit more about delta-9 THC. Research has suggested that people who use marijuana over several years saw brain effects like lower IQ, slower processing speed, and memory and attention issues.

You could face charges for possessing, making, or selling delta-8 in states where it's against the law. Even in states where delta-8 is legal, you could face charges if you drive while under the influence of it.

Delta-8 has become popular among people who think the substance provides a mellower high than other cannabis products, or are interested in possible medicinal benefits. But there are lots of questions about delta-8's safety, how well it works, and whether it's legal. Check with your doctor, and research delta-8 laws in your area, before you try these products.

Delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol, also known as delta-8 THC, is a psychoactive substance found in the Cannabis sativa plant, of which marijuana and hemp are two varieties. Delta-8 THC is one of over 100 cannabinoids produced naturally by the cannabis plant but is not found in significant amounts in the cannabis plant. As a result, concentrated amounts of delta-8 THC are typically manufactured from hemp-derived cannabidiol (CBD).

It is important for consumers to be aware that delta-8 THC products have not been evaluated or approved by the FDA for safe use in any context. They may be marketed in ways that put the public health at risk and should especially be kept out of reach of children and pets.

The natural amount of delta-8 THC in hemp is very low, and additional chemicals are needed to convert other cannabinoids in hemp, like CBD, into delta-8 THC (i.e., synthetic conversion). Concerns with this process include:

Manufacturers are packaging and labeling these products in ways that may appeal to children (gummies, chocolates, cookies, candies, etc.). These products may be purchased online, as well as at a variety of retailers, including convenience stores and gas stations, where there may not be age limits on who can purchase these products. As discussed above, there have been numerous poison control center alerts involving pediatric patients who were exposed to delta-8 THC-containing products. Additionally, animal poison control centers have indicated a sharp overall increase in accidental exposure of pets to these products. Keep these products out of reach of children and pets.

The FDA is actively working with federal and state partners to further address the concerns related to these products and monitoring the market for product complaints, adverse events, and other emerging cannabis-derived products of potential concern. The FDA will warn consumers about public health and safety issues and take action, when necessary, when FDA-regulated products violate the law.

Among those who reported delta-8 use, close to 91% also reported marijuana use, contributing to the approximately 30% of 12th graders overall who reported past-year marijuana use. The survey also showed delta-8 use was more common in the South and Midwest regions and in states without cannabis legalization or delta-8 regulations. In contrast, levels of marijuana use did not differ by state-level cannabis policies. The findings were published as a brief report in JAMA. The Monitoring the Future survey is conducted by researchers at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of NIH.

Delta-8 is one of over 100 cannabinoids in the Cannabis sativa plant. There is no federal minimum age requirement to purchase delta-8 products, which may be sold online or in gas stations and convenience stores. In 2022, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued a consumer update warning of the serious health risks associated with use of delta-8 THC, including reports of adverse events involving use of delta-8 products and risks of exposure to toxic byproducts.

Numerous studies have found that adolescent cannabis use is associated with adverse effects on learning, memory, and attention; changes in brain development; and the development of cannabis use disorder and other psychiatric disorders, such as depression, psychosis and suicidality. There are no existing medications to treat cannabis use disorder, and current treatments are primarily through psychosocial interventions, such as cognitive behavioral therapy. More research is needed to understand how delta-8, specifically, impacts these and other health outcomes.

This analysis of Monitoring the Future survey results also found that approximately 14% of 12th graders in the South and 15% in the Midwest reported delta-8 use, compared to 10% in the Northeast and 5% in the West. Around 14% of those in states without cannabis legalization reported delta-8 use, compared to 8% in states with legalization. In states without existing delta-8 regulations, 14% reported use compared to 6% in states with delta-8 legislation.

The Monitoring the Future survey is given annually to students in classrooms in eighth, 10th, and 12th grades who self-report their substance use behaviors over various time periods, such as past 30 days, past 12 months, and lifetime. In 2023, the survey included questions on delta-8 for the first time, and they were administered to a randomly selected one-third of 12th grade students, resulting in 2,186 12th graders in 27 states. Given the prevalence of use found in the 2023 survey, questions on delta-8 have been added to future surveys for all age groups.

Delta-8 THC and delta-9 THC come from the cannabis sativa plant, which naturally produces more than 100 cannabinoids, or active constituents. However, while the plant contains significant amounts of delta-9 THC, it contains very little delta-8 THC, a minor cannabinoid.

Some manufacturers market delta-8 THC products as treatments or cures for medical conditions; however, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has neither evaluated nor approved these claims. In fact, in May 2022, the FDA issued warning letters to five manufacturers of delta-8 THC products for violating the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act.

The warning letters address misbranding, such as not providing adequate instructions for use, illegal marketing of products as treatments for medical conditions or other therapeutic uses and adding delta-8 THC to foods, such as gummies, chocolate and other consumables.
