Hello, me again as newbie with minnowboard

I read about the latest UEFI firmware for the minnowboard, has anyone tried & posted how to do this? how to access in the booting part and flashing it? I was wondering if this would help/improve. What are the main benefits in doing it?

Thanks, Christian

Hi Christian,

Our website contains instructions for updating the firmware either via the UEFI Shell application or a DediProg.  Download the latest version (provided in a zip file) and you will find a doc folder with those instructions along with the firmware image and update tool.

http://uefidk.intel.com/content/minnowboard-uefi-firmware

Updating the firmware provides the latest bug fixes and firmware features (see Release Notes).

Thanks,

Elmer

HI, thanks for the quick answer, I found it and I am following instructions but:

Shell> FS0
'FS0' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program, or script file.

I am more habituated to interact with the booting shell, here according to instructions I have to place my data wherever I want so I have placed the firmware in the SD card, exit the booting and then into shell: I got that, any idea how to look for the file in the SD card? any other workaround?

Hi,

You should copy the firmware image and tool to a USB key first (from your host machine).  Then insert the USB key to the MB and power it on.  UEFI should recognize the USB Key, then enter fs0:  at the shell prompt (don’t forget the colon at the end).

If you’re using the SD card, the mapping could be different.  Try the shell command “map –v” to list the devices that the SD card is mapped to and use the one assigned to the SD card.

Thanks,

Elmer

Actually what I am trying to do is, determine if my minnow is working fine or not, examples:

1. first time I boot, got stuck in " booting 'boot' " I unplugged, checked the filesystem, connect again and WORKED, but slow, weird.
2. I can't have real keyboard response I am only using minicom, not monitors or any peripheral.
3. I am assuming that, maybe this new firmware will help me but, no succes when trying to update.

Also when booting Angstrom I got this:

[    0.011000] NMI: IOCK error (debug interrupt?) for reason 41 on CPU 0.
[    0.011000] Process swapper/0 (pid: 0, ti=c18d4000 task=c18df0e0 task.ti=c18d4000)
[    0.011000] Stack:

[    0.980151] EXT2-fs (mmcblk0p2): error: couldn't mount because of unsupported optional features (240)
[    3.422997] pch_can 0000:02:0c.3 (unregistered net_device): PCH CAN opened with MSI

the ones that say, couldn't mount are the ones that got me worried about if it is normal or not.

thanks, Christian

Thanks Elmer, let me take this into steps, I don't want to miss a thing:

1. USB flash memory, any format? FAT?
2. Copy in the root folder:  FirmwareUpdate.efi  MINNOW.fd these 2 files are all I need?
3. plug the USB and the turn it on, abor booting and move to FS0?

Thanks, Christian

Hi Christian,

Use FAT32 and don’t forget the colon at the end of fs0

I had forgotten the colon, my bad! I did what you said and seems like worked however I keep thinking this board is not working OK,
Flashing the firmware is taking like forever seems like stuck.

Christian,

Were you able to successfully update the firmware? I have document all the steps with diagrams over at elinux wiki:

Elmer,

Thank you for describing the steps in detail!

Hi, thanks for the documentation and the concern. I did it but with bad results, seems like the minnow is not working good, got stuck when flashing the new firmware besides other issues that I assumed to be fixed with the new firmware
