Hi Guys,

I can do basic maintenance (I guess that means winterize and oil change), but am thinking I may need to do some suspension work and brake and clutch fluid replacements this year.  Anyone want to get together to do some maintenance this spring?

Hey BlueLakeSide - where you located?
I am supposed to be doing my brake and clutch fluid replacements this year too, and coolant.
But don't know if i want to try it myself.......
Do you have a garage, and a way to dispose of fluids, etc?
Regards,
Ken Olson

I think that is a great idea. I am in the process of replacing my rear brake components on my youngster (I have two '01 s; one has 32,000 the other 104,000). I burned them up last year on the way to Colorado. So I've invested in brake bleeding equip. and have removed all the brake fluid from the system. Waiting for a replacement caliper assembly. And I've had to delve into front end wire harness and fuel injection issues. That one is currently fixed.
So I could see myself as being helpful in a maint. get together. I have a small garage and a typical Richfield driveway for use. My issue is I am leaving for the VFRD T-Mac rally May 19, returning May 27. Then I leave on the 30th for Road America in Elkhart Lake Wis for AMA road racing. That includes three days of Spectator Tour of the Track. For $20 per day, spectators are given a to ride four laps during the racers lunch time. Quite fun.
So I'm not available until mid June.
Let me know if there is interest at that time.

P.S. I am retired so am available during weekdays as well as weekends.

I don't have the skill level that Terry would, but I do have tools and a garage (and driveway) in Apple Valley.  I have an oil pan, which I believe we can drain fluids into and I can dispose at the Dakota County recycling center. If not, we can figure out a solution for disposal.

I'm not in any hurry, I'm open to trying it with us "rookies" or waiting until we have a guy like Terry also.

Hey all, I'm going to ask that I not be considered an expert. Most of the stuff I've been doing lately is on-the-job-learning. I rely heavily on the appropriate Honda Service Manual. I rely heavily on VFRD members advice. There is great benefit to group brain storming. And it is a great way to get to know each other.
I'll be looking forward to a June get together. If I can provide experienced advice I'll be glad to. But I suspect these sessions will be great learning experienced for all involved.
Ride Safe,
Terry Gale
P.S. I hope some have electrical knowledge. My brain considers electrical stuff FM. (That'd be Fooken Majic.)

Too late, you're the expert!  :)

I've got the complete manual for the 4th Gen, plus a mityvac (that I've never used).  I'm looking forward to it - we can do it in Apple Valley if you guys would like.  Right now, my two Saturdays in June that are free are 6/15 and 6/29.  Otherwise I could to an afternoon/evening.

I can make either date. Looking forward to the get together. Should I bring all my tools (torque wrench, chain adjustment wrench) or any thing else? Sockets, wrenches, let me know.
Also need an address.

Hey viffers; sorry to report I hit a deer at 65 mph on I-74 near Urbana IL May 19 on our way to North Carolina. While I had some injuries, I am truly lucky to have survived. It was 9:10 pm, about 10 minutes after sundown.

I suffered a compound fracture of my left forearm, a fracture of my left wrist, a compound fracture of my right wrist, a fracture of my right forearm, three fractured ribs and a fracture of my right shoulder blade.

I have no memory of events from about a half hour before the crash until late the next afternoon.

I believe my arms broke upon initial contact (the deer went through the front cowl and impacted on the steering head - transferred force directly to clip-ons) and other forces broke the frame. I separated from the bike and landed on the shoulder of the freeway on my back - out cold. The deer landed in the left lane and was immediately creamed by a following semi truck.

I was in the Carle Medical Care in Urbana until May 24th. A riding buddy brought a trailer down and hauled me and the machine (smashed front cowl and broken frame) back the 24th and 25th.

I've had further surgery on my left arm and will be recuperating for a couple of months. Only recently have I been able to type.

I'd love to attend any further maintenance events but I cannot ride or drive for a while, so I'd need a ride.

So, everyone watch out for those hooved forest rats and ride safe,

Terry Gale

Wow, Terry - That is so horrible!  I would not wish that upon anyone!
But of course great that you survived, hopefully close to good as new!
Were you riding alone?  Or did someone describe to you what happened?  Or did your memory start coming back?

Hey Ken, I do hope to be back to nearly good as new. Hopefully for the fall riding season.

I did have a riding partner: Mike Christie, MotorMike on VFRD, lives in so. Mpls. I met Mike last year when I had a 2000 VFR for sale. The timing was not right for him for my y2k, but he did find a pristine 2001 last fall are we rode together the rest of the year. We've become good buddies and we were both T-Mac-bound together. He gave me the details of the event and stuck with me the whole week in the hospital.
A truly great wing man! Much thanks Mike!

He did not see the actual strike; his first clue there was a problem were the sparks from my machine sliding down the pavement. He parked 50 yards down the highway and ran back to find me unconscious on the shoulder.
(I believe someone said I was unconscious for about five minutes.) He summoned the first responders and acted as my sanity check throughout the week.

Much of what happened was deduced by examining my gear scars. My Schuberth C-3 helmet definitely saved my life; EMTs pointed out the "death blow" the helmet absorbed to Mike. My Areostich Transit leather suit saved much body damage when I landed on my back and right shoulder. The TF armor was magnificent. Mike said I was cussing the EMTs as they cut my jacket off. I suspect it did not slow them down. ;-)

A possible lesson learned: we were in the left lane on the freeway, having just passed a slower car in the right lane. I had just moved back to the right lane when the strike happened. I figure I may have been focusing on the just-passed car instead of focusing down the road. (Mike was still in the left track of the left lane about one car-length behind so he did not catch any of the fallout.)

Moral: Watch Where You Are Going at all times. And Always Wear All The Gear; leather especially. Mesh gear would not have done nearly as well. Being hot in your gear is much better than being crippled.

Ride safe everyone,
Terry The Deerslayer
