Subject: BPOU Leader Update

Wednesday, Mar 11, 2009

Dear Republican Leader,

With all going at the Capitol and the Senate Contest trial, I wanted to update you on several important items.

Budget Battle Update

For the past several weeks the DFL legislators have been quick to criticize Gov. Pawlenty's budget proposal while at the same time offering no plan of their own. This past weekend, two DFL legislators came forward to admit something we've already known; their plan involves tax increases.

On Saturday, Rep. Ann Lenczewski said, "I have to tell you that, you know, we haven't gone public with this and we've gotten a lot of flak for it. But there is no doubt that the Minnesota House will be proposing revenue to solve the deficit," and "So, I know that you understand the need for progressive taxation, we will be getting to that point." In Monday's Pioneer Press, Sen. Tarryl Clark said, "The question isn't whether we'll raise taxes. The question is how we'll raise taxes." (Bill Salisbury, "In Next Two Weeks, Pawlenty, Democrats To Pitch Plans For Fixing $4.6 Billion Shortfall," Pioneer Press, March 9, 2009)

To fight these tax increases, we must get the word out that in this economic climate, Minnesotans cannot afford another tax increase. The best things we can do are write letter to the editor, call into talk radio, and comment on blogs and news websites. We must stand up and let our voices be heard.

US Senate Recount Update

The Senate Contest trial continues this week, with Team Franken in the second week of presenting its arguments. Last week Team Franken petitioned the Minnesota Supreme Court to grant Al Franken an election certificate, allowing Franken to be seated in the US Senate. In a 5-0 decision, the Minnesota Supreme County denied Team Franken's petition. Team Franken is set to rest its case this week.

As the contest continues, please support the effort by writing letters to the editor, calling into radio shows or posting on blogs.

BPOU Conventions

We have had a successful first week of conventions so far. Please remember to forward the names and contact information for your BPOU's newly elected leadership and State Central members to your BPOU's Field Staff.

Sincerely,

Ron Carey
State Chair
