The Brooklyn Park City Council is considering a plan where taxpaying residents would lose their right to select the garbage company of their choice, and be forced to use whatever company the city tells you to use. This is mainly being done in the name of environmentalism to reduce noise and air pollution, although the city also claims that it would be easier on the roads, and residents may save money. If this plan goes though and you are not happy with garbage service on your block, or you have to pay more than you currently pay, too bad. You are just one of 75,000 residents. The city can also use this as a giant first step to start handling garbage "in house" as a massive expansion of government.Anyone who considers themselves a conservative should rally against this, as it means less free market, and more government intrusion and possible expansion. As T-Paw says, "if you can google it and find businesses doing it, government should stay out of it!"At Monday's City Council Meeting (where I will also receive the Mayor's Good Citizenship Award) the City Manager will announce the dates of the public meetings in August on this topic. However, there is an open forum portion at the beginning of each Council Meeting where citizens can speak on any topic. You can also write letters to the editor, and contact the Mayor, your City Councilperson, or members of the CLIC (Citizens Long-Range Improvement Commission) who dreamed this up before I was appointed to the Commission this Spring. Thanks,Andrew Reinhardt

Subject: Community Engagement on Solid Waste Collection
Hello CLIC members (and former, still interested CLIC members),
As we discussed at our last meeting, the City Council took CLIC’s recommendation to organize garbage collection in the City under consideration and wants more public input on the topic. The City Manager is presenting a community engagement plan to the City Council on June 27th that would convene three community café style public meetings in August to review organized garbage collection. This is where CLIC comes in. We need CLIC members to share a 5 minute synopsis of your two years studying organized garbage collection and how you came to your recommendation. The rest of the meeting will be conducted in small round table discussions gathering input from attendees.
Please let me know if you are interested in helping at the meetings and if you have any questions. Dates will be picked based on availability of meeting locations. Thanks.
