Michele Bachmann will present Presidential award to local veteran unit

CENTERVILLE — Bob Hathaway ambles out of his home, clad in Calvary
hat, adorned with Calvary sabre.

He has waited 45 years for an award he will receive this weekend — the
long overdue Presidential Unit Citation for being part of the first
Calvary team into Vietnam, back in 1965.

“We should have got it in 1965, but it didn’t pass (Congress),”
Hathaway, 64, said. “By the time it passed in 1973, nobody wanted it.
Now I’ve been the squeaky wheel calling for it (again).”

A ceremony recognizing Hathaway will take place Sunday at Forest Lake
High School, with Rep. Michele Bachmann and State Rep. Bob Dettmer
presenting his award. Iraq War veteran and Forest Lake native Capt.
Peter Hegseth will also be present as keynote speaker.

Hathaway and all Minnesota Vietnam veterans will be honored March 29
for Vietnam War Veterans Day, which became an official day of
recognition in Minnesota in 2008.
