E-Democracy.Org is starting to support local citizens interested in
building connections among neighbors (building on our city-wide Issues
Forum foundation). We support our online groups using the open source
GroupServer platform (a should be better known GPL platform for online
groups). The Standish Ericsson example:

While I can't make it to MinneBar until mid-day, if there is interest
we can host a session on ways to connect neighbors and strengthen
neighborhoods online. I'd be interested in what ideas and technologies
others would bring to the fore. I am hosting something similar in
Washington DC this week:

And I have a post on the topic on the PBS Idea Lab where I sometimes
blog:

Let us know if you are interested, and we will put something forward
if enough folks say yes:

P.S. We've been around since 1994 when a number of volunteers from
Minnesota tech and civic community came together to create the world's
first election-oriented website. Today we host online community forums
in over 10 communities across three countries. We are always looking
for more volunteers to join us.

Steven,

I think such a session could be interesting. There will be some other
people from the non-profit sector there as well so I'm sure other people
would like to discuss these issues.

I encourage you to add a session to the sessions page
(http://barcamp.org/MinneBarSessions). We can work around your scheduling
problems if necessary, or you could just stake out an open room when you
get to the event (we'll have some ad-hoc sessions, I'm sure.)

Regards,

Hi Steven!
I'm definitely interested in this topic! I attended a small meeting
with some high-power Minneapolis city officials recently and suggested
that they adopt RSS feeds for their housing inspection schedule - They
literally laughed at the suggestion. So, it looks like it's up to
us! ;)

As it turns out, while I myself can't make it to MinneBar, Tim Erickson with E-Democracy.Org will be there and I should note that Peter Fleck is one of the hosts of our neighborhood forum in Seward:

So perhaps something spontaneous can be arranged.

We are hugely interested in applying technology to our local community and government in ways that open things up and engage people.
