I am sorry but I had to give my crystal ball to a friend of mine, so I
could not guess which error it was or which form it took. Really sorry.

Did you check the whole wiki page on Virtual Box?
http://wiki.minix3.org/en/UsersGuide/RunningMinixOnVirtualBox
Particularly interesting is the 7th part, #Workarounds

Once you got MINIX running, you will be able to install X11. Please keep
in mind that MINIX is not particularly oriented at graphical interfaces,
the command line is the only way most of us are using.

I am not sure VLC is available (for instance, I am not sure there are
any way to get audio in MINIX.) And I am sure there are no Firefox
pakcage at the moment. These are just two examples of things you should
not expect to be available with MINIX at the moment.

For what purpose you are using Minix 3..?

any other web browser..?

how is Minix 3 for older hardware . I am thinking to play with it on
my old laptop ( IBM thinkpad T20 pentium 3 with 128 ram )

Hello!
Processor and memory meet the hardware requirements.
http://wiki.minix3.org/en/UsersGuide/HardwareRequirements
You have to try, I think.
The BIOS settings should be set for the Non-windows (OS - other, or
something similar).

P.S.
Sorry for my terrible english. My native language is 1Cv7.7)))

To start  X11 installation you have to make sure your minix on VirtualBox can resolve internet domain name, if you follow the wiki instruction you be able to setup networking but not able to resolve internet domain name thus make the pkgin command not working.

here is step i use to get networking working

after installation

#shutdown

select MINIX atVM  VirtualBox Manager
click Setting
select Networking

Change   Attached To : Bridged Adapter
Name : whatever network driver your host OS is using to connect to internet

Advanced

Adapter Type: PCnet-PC II (Am79C970A)

once you have this setting set, boot MINIX3 you should be able to ftp to ftp.minix3.org if its fails your pkgin will not work and X11 installation will have to be done manually using cdrom method
