Hello there,

I have been wondering for a long time and never dared to ask: what
tools are you using to develop on Minix? I mean: which text editor?
what desktop environment (EDE, jwm or console)? In other words, I
would like to know about how you get your work done on Minix.

It will be very helpful for the rest of us who did not make it yet.

Cheers.

Hi,

I mostly use GNU screen with emacs and vim. I'm a big fan of screen.

vim from the console basically. I might switch to X-with-something and
ggim when the new release comes out and everything works nicely.

nvi, svn, zsh and ssh are must-haves for me that aren't in the minix
base system. hacking in the console is bearable but using multiple
xterms on another machine over ssh is much more pleasant. That could
be on the local minix machine too, but the frequent rebooting and not
seeing the console messages in that case makes it more of a pain. Also
serial output to another machine is very useful in some instances.

Hi,

- EditPlus on Windows, then I download the files on MINIX using FTP;
- For small in-place changes elvis;
- I use the console whenever possible (often over Telnet);
- If I need X, I use xinit with twm
- If I need X and also need sufficient memory, I run the X server on
Windows and set DISPLAY

With kind regards,
Erik

Hello,

For me a combination of ssh and ftp works best. I'm running Minix3
virtualized from Ubuntu. Changes can be done With gedit in combination
with a midnight commandertool Krusader. If gedit has been opening a
file it could write back immediately using ftp.

Kind Regards,

Johnny

I also find GNU coreutils and rsync helpful. If you're used to a Linux
environment, coreutils can make Minix a little more familiar.
