Hi guys,

I installed minix 3.3.0 on VirtualBox.

When I run pkgin commands I had that result:
pkgin: Could not fetch http://www.minix3.org....

Do I configure something in /etc/resolve.conf?

My network configuration is NAT.

The error was in VirtualBox, because I made the installation on VMware 12, and I didn't experience the same error

While I am not sure what's going wrong here, it may help to know that normally, no extra configuration should be necessary. Are you sure that it is just name resolution that is the problem? Can you connect to external machines using their IP address?

If it is indeed just DNS, there might be an issue with the DNS server address. You can use "dhcpd -q" to see the current DHCP-based settings; there should be a "DNSserver" field in there. If that DNS server address is 127.0.0.1 or 10.0.2.x, the problem might be with routing, and it may then indeed be necessary to hardcode another server address in MINIX3 using /etc/resolv.conf.

David

Hi David,

I was able to ping remote machine with the IP address.
I used dhcpd -q and the DNSserver is 127.0.1.1 for VM in virtualbox.
I attached the results for VMware and Virtualbox.

Regards.

EKA.

Alright, that is the problem then. For some reason, VirtualBox gives MINIX3 the host side's DNS server address without checking whether that address can actually be reached from within the VM. In this case, it obviously can not: packets addressed to 127.0.1.1 will never leave the VM. The last person who had this problem was able to solve it using the settings change described here:

 https://www.virtualbox.org/manual/ch09.html#nat-adv-dns

Could you please try this as well? If it does not work, it is still possible to change /etc files on the MINIX3 side, but this solution is a bit cleaner.

Regards,
David

Thanks David., I tried,

VBoxManage modifyvm "VM name" --natdnshostresolver1 on.

It is ok now.

Glad to hear! Based on your experience I have added this piece of information to our wiki:
