Please add Minix3 instructions for running it on more Virtual
Machines. I think is is very important to spread the use of Minix3.
Too many people are paranoid about creating partitions on their
existing computers, thus the safest way for people to try it.

- VMware (from VMware). Already supported.
- VirtualBox (from Sun).
- Xen (from Citrix).
- Hyper-V for Windows (from Microsoft).
- VirtualPC 2007 (from Microsoft).

We'll gladly take contributions to the wiki: http://wiki.minix3.org. The
most popular VMs for running Minix 3 seem to be VMWare, QEMU/KVM,
VirtualBox, and Bochs. Our goal is to document the process of running
Minix 3 on these VMs, but we could use help from the community.

It's less likely that we'll have documentation for the other VMs. Minix
doesn't currently run on Xen. Someone made a port, but it's out of date.
Plus, we don't have the manpower to support Xen. We don't have access to
Hyper-V or VirtualPC, but we're happy to take wiki contributions for them.

Best,
Arun

Virtual PC is free (no cost) and it runs minix:

But there is no driver for NEC 21140, the network card emulated in
VPC, so you can't download/upload anything from/to the VM.

I'd also like to add that Minix3 works great on VMWare Fusion on the
Mac. If you encounter errors such as:

VMware Fusion internal monitor error
*** vcpu-0:ASSERT vmcore/private/iospace_shared.h:558 bugNr=64440

on installation, simply remove the line:

pciBridge0.present = "TRUE"

(and any other similar lines like pciBridge1, 2, 3 etc.) from the .vmx
file. You can find the vmx file for a VMWare machine in ~/Documents/
Virtual Machines/<VM name>/ (again, this is for the mac version).

Cheers,
Anant

Great. Glad to hear it.

Contributions welcome and appreciated for either the driver or
documentation.

You'd also need the lance driver fixes (hacks? http://groups.google.com/group/comp.os.minix/browse_thread/thread/1a682ed4b7c661f4#)
to get networking working, or just install a current version of the
kernel from SVN.

There is a student working on porting/writing a driver for VirtualPC's
network card. These things take some time obviously, but we hope to
have support for VirtualPC in this regard not too long from now.

I agree that Sun VirtualBox is great. I'm currently running Windows 7
beta in VirtualBox. VirtualBox is great at supporting Linux and
Solaris. It suppors USB, unlike VirtualPC.

The advantages of VirtualPC is the VDD (Virtual Disk Drive) file
format. Microsoft has stated they plan to integrate native support in
upcoming Windows for VDD. Another upside is that VirtualPC supports
the Microsoft Windows family very well. The downside is that
VirtualPC sucks at supporting Linux.
