One of the biggest mistakes people make with mini-splits is choosing the wrong-sized unit.

Most homeowners assume bigger is better, but that’s not always true. An oversized system can short-cycle (turn on and off too often), while an undersized unit may run constantly and struggle to maintain temperature.

Mini-split systems are typically sized in BTUs, which measure how much heating or cooling a system can provide. A common rule of thumb is around 20–25 BTUs per square foot, but that can vary depending on insulation, ceiling height, and sun exposure.

For example:

  • A 500 sq ft room might need around 9,000–12,000 BTUs
  • Larger or poorly insulated spaces may require more

I found this sizing breakdown helpful when trying to figure it out: https://minisplitadvisor.com/mini-split-size-guide/

Curious what others here have installed — what size worked (or didn’t)?
