I would like Gmail to work like Google Groups, Docs, etc., where everything stays still, but the reading/list area scrolls. Is there any way to do that?

Enable

  Navigation > Floating > Floating Navigation

and

  Main > Toolbars > Floating Toolbars

for a similar effect.

Thanks for the reply. I have enabled that, and it is a start, but it's
still pretty far from what I was trying to achieve. I guess what I
need it a way to keep these elements still: navigation pane, chat
list, search header, and the links at the top. Then if I have the
floating toolbar option on... everything would be working the way I
was hoping. Any ideas?

Like I said in the last message, the floating navigation option will make the navigation column fixed.

If you disable both the floating options and put this in your custom CSS it will be close:
.GcwpPb-Z8OBDd { position: fixed; top: 0; z-index: 9998 !important; }
.GcwpPb-Z8OBDd + div { margin-top: 97px; }
.VP5otc-pzeoBf, .iI, .cP > div:nth-child(2) > div:nth-child(2)> div > div:nth-child(2) > div:first-child > div:nth-child(1) { z-index: 9998 !important; position: fixed; top: 97; }
.cP > div:nth-child(2) > div:nth-child(2)> div > div:nth-child(2) > div:first-child > div:nth-child(2) { margin-left: 172px; }
table.F.cf.zt { padding-top: 36px; }
Anything more than that is either theme-specific, or can't be done with CSS alone.

I personally think having navigation and the toolbar scroll with with page is enough. the header and Google bar are used so rarely that it's not worth sacrificing 97 vertical pixels...

You can always use the [ / ] keyboard shortcut to snap to the top of the screen and focus the search box.

Is there anyway to make the right sided chat floating as well?

Thanks.

PS:  I'm sure it's a pipe dream, but a multi-tab environment, like yahoo mail (which as a whole I really hate,) would be awesome.  I hate not being able to access the contacts if I'm composing a message, without opening a new window for the compose.
