Microphone/Sound Question

Question:  Is there any HMG/Harbour sample program where a microphone could listen for and identify a "sharp" sound such as a:

Single hand clap?

Thunder?

Starter pistol shot?  

I have yet to do any such "audio" programming so am not sure where to start.  

Any suggestions or guidance would be most greatly appreciated!
