Everyone has a favorite web page that they navigate to as soon as they open their web browser. Whether it's CNN, Gmail, or your most beloved tech site (ours), we all have that one page we consider more important than the rest. This is why you'll want to know how to create a shortcut to a website on your desktop, so you can find out what's happening in the world right away, not two minutes behind.

Thankfully, Google Chrome makes it easy to drop clickable links onto your desktop, letting you jump to a web page in one click. Here's how to create desktop shortcuts for your favorite web pages using Chrome.

Desktop shortcut refers to the shortcut placed (usually an icon, or small file) on a computer desktop; it helps users open a program, folder, or file easily. You can create s desktop shortcut yourself to point to a certain program, folder, document, or Internet location. This post of MiniTool is going to show you how to create a new desktop shortcut for Chrome.

Open as window indicates opening in a separate window. If you check the Open as window option while creating shortcut, the corresponding website will be opened in a new separate window whenever you open the shortcut. Otherwise, the website will be opened as a new tab in the browser window you have already opened.

I've been using Chrome for years but just noticed this feature now, but sadly it doesn't work for me. I did some Googling and found a few articles that offered fixes but none helped, I found this thread which mentioned that it will only work out of the box for Chromium that is compiled correctly for Linux and the official Google Chrome. Well I have the version of Chromium from Extra and the official Google Chrome package from the AUR and neither work. When I try to create a shortcut it pops up an error box that says "Chromium (Google Chrome) Could Not Create An Application Shortcut". In that link I referenced above it mentioned that the variables XDG_DATA_DIRS should be set to the location of the templates, I'm not sure what the location of the templates are but it's set to /usr/share:/usr/share/local and it says that the CHROME_DESKTOP variable should be set to the desktop link. Mine was empty so I set it to Chromium and it still didn't work.

We are looking to save a form as a desktop shortcut. A few of our users have done this but are only able to submit the form once and then it will no longer submit for them. They get an error message. This is a maintenance request form so it is submitted multiple times in a row to create additional tickets.

Is there a way around this? Does anyone know why the form only allows them to submit once but not again? We don't have these issues with users who pull the link from their email or bookmark the link.

To create a desktop shortcut to a website using Google Chrome, open the browser and go to a website. Then click the three-dot icon in the top-right corner of your browser window. Next, go to Save and share > Create shortcut. Finally, name your shortcut and click Create.

On a Windows 10 or 11 computer, you will see a notification pop-up asking if you want to pin your shortcut app to the Taskbar. If you select Yes, the shortcut app will remain at the bottom of your screen, along with your other pinned apps.

Alternatively, you can also right-click the website shortcut on your Windows desktop and select Pin to Start. This allows you to quickly access the website shortcut by clicking the Windows logo at the bottom of your screen.

Using this method will give you a shortcut with a long name and a generic icon. If you want to change the name and icon, select the shortcut and press the Command + I keys on your keyboard. (You can also right-click the shortcut and select Get Info.)

I'm trying to find a way to make a shortcut for Google Chrome that will open multiple specific webpages in multiple tabs. Right now I am using a Google Chrome desktop shortcut and command line switches to accomplish this, but it is falling short. I have this line of code in the target textbox (right click shortcut > properties > target textbox) right now:

This does almost exactly what I want. Google Chrome opens in a new incognito window with the URLs in separate tabs. Except, there is one big problem. The target textbox only allows for a very limited amount of characters. I need to open multiple URLs in multiple tabs, most likely 8 or more. All my URLs will not fit in the target textbox.

Hello there, I've just installed Zorin Os 16.2 on my laptop to use on a daily basis. I like the clear-cut design and responsiveness of the OS but have a minor icon problem that makes me frustrated It's really basic but after installing google chrome when I put google chrome on the desktop as an icon it shows a google logo rather than the obvious google chrome logo is there a way to change it to the original chrome icon? Thank you for your efforts! Ekran Grnts - 2023-02-12 17-02-13200x303

*You can make shortcut icons to websites on the desktop or taskbar (More tools/create shortcut). They show up in Start/Google Apps (delete the one on the desktop, it doesn't work). Make shortcuts from there. You can delete them with the Main Menu app.

You can use this to create shortcuts to web sites on the desktop in Firefox with icon (after you find the icon). Just drag the lock to the desktop. Too bad there's no way to get it on the taskbar (that I know of)

The problem im experiencing is, I can browse the folder structure and open this in Windows explorer, however if I close the webpage down it appears to drop the credientials and the location is no longer available through windows explorer.

[First let me say] I was having variations of the issue where I couldn't get a desktop shortcut to the ACTUAL file on SharePoint. Best I could do was to get a shortcut to a file which would only download a copy of it. That is, until I figured out this workaround:

Now, if you went to your desktop and did the right click/ create shortcut option, and then pasted this URL into which you just copied, it would not work for you... well, it would not work for me anyway. So here's the trick:

At some point I hope the SharePoint development team will learn about this problem and make it easier for people to make desktop shortcuts to the various files they need to work on within SharePoint. If or when that happens this workaround will probably no longer make sense to anyone and this great discovery will be rendered obsolete :)

Another option you may want to consider is creating a link (alias or .url) in a Sharepoint Folder (Document Library). This is a much easier option, if it works for you:
1. Open the location of the file to link (or create a shortcut for)
2. Copy the address of the file
3. Open the sharepoint library/folder where you want the link
4. In the Library/Folder menu bar (above the breadcrumb line, hopefully) click the New button
5. At the bottom of the list, select "Link"
6. The link dialog opens- paste the copied link in the box
7. It will then open a "File name" box with a .url filetype
8. Type whatever name you want (file name format conditional still apply) and click "Create"
You now have a link to the file in sharepoint. You should also be able to create a shortcut to this on your desk top

Hi. I have google chrome as a shortcut on my desktop alongside safari firefox and others. Can be useful to see if a web page shows the same in different web browsers. I want a shortcut to a chrome web page dedicated to one particular website page. I have done this again after years but can't remember how I got their.

Are asking about the Google Chrome browser? In other words, if you click one icon, the browser displays specific options. If you click the other icon, the browser displays different options? If so, you could set up different Chrome profiles and create a shortcut for each.

The other icon (can't work out how it happened) has this. When I right click and choose properties I get a different pop up. and on the web document tab, I can paste a URL into it. I don't get Web document with the standard chrome desk top icon

In case anyone is looking for a quicker way to create a shortcut, you can also grab the lock icon (or where the lock would be for non-secure website) near the URL in the browser's address bar and drag it to your desktop.

For this, just right-click the desktop and do New -> Shortcut then put the URL in the text box. This will create an internet shortcut that will open in whatever your default browser is. If you want a browser specific shortcut, then you do like I posted above.

I can create a shortcut in Chrome with More tools > Create shortcut. For Windows the documentation suggests that this will create some kind of file on the Desktop which users can click to open the shortcut. On Linux, not running a desktop environment, I see no such files. Yet, I would really like to have a script which I could run to open my shortcut. How can I do this?

Creating a bookmark or desktop shortcut can allow you to quickly access the login page for your Brightly product. Bookmarks (or favorites) are created and accessed through your chosen internet browser. Desktop shortcuts are saved to your desktop and will open your selected browser to the saved URL. These options will not automatically log you into the product, but they will open the login page quickly for you to enter your credentials and log in. *Note: This process may vary depending on your version of Windows (PC) or OSX (Mac) and the browser you are using.
