AtExperian, we value the security of data above all. Experian relies on the industry standard Open ID Connect protocol for granting access. You can authenticate to an Experian API using service accounts or end user accounts on their behalf.

OAuth 2.0 is an authorization framework that allows third-party services to make requests on behalf of a user without accessing passwords, and other sensitive information. Experian APIs use OAuth 2.0 protocol for authentication and authorization. Experian APIs supports the OAuth 2.0 two-legged authentication code flow.

NOTE: the host URL below (sandbox-us-api-experian.com) is specific for US endpoints. You can replace the US URL below with one of the host URLs above (for region/country you are interested in).

The JWKS (jwks_uri) endpoint returns a set of public keys that are generated and rolled automatically by Experian. Clients can use this information to verify the integrity of asymmetrically-signed ID tokens. For information about other parameters please refer to OpenID Provider Metadata in OpenID Connect Discovery 1.0.

Once your application is properly configured, it's time to request an access token. An access Token is a JSON Web Token (JWT, aka the JOT token). The JWT token will contain the user/service account profile information together with expiry time and issuer details. The request access token can be used as a bearer token to invoke Experian APIs and allow your application to access products and APIs. A refresh token is also issued, so applications can renew expired access tokens.

TOKEN CACHING: Please note that it is expected that the full lifespan of the access token (30 minutes) is taken advantage of by implementing TOKEN CACHING. We recommend that you generate a new access token to be securely cached in order to feed your Service API calls until the 28 or 29 minute mark. At this point then a new access token can be generated to substitute the expiring one in the cache to again start the cycle. Doing this is beneficial to your company and Experian systems as it minimizes the number of access token calls sent therefore avoiding unnecessary overhead on both sides.

If the client chooses to revoke generated access and refresh tokens, it can be done by calling the revoke token endpoint. To revoke a token, a client application would make a request to the revocation endpoint as shown in the below sample in the sandbox environment:

I have a question. I am new to the business world and I finally generated my first business credit report with experian. However, the SIC code is incorrect. Does anyone know how I can change it? Also, is there a way to do this for free? Because Experian seems to want a hefty sum to access your Business credit file. Thank you all for your help!

To make changes, look under "key personnel" (upper left), select "submit update" link right of "total employees". This will open up a new page "Business Profile Confirmation Form" with all of your info. and giving you the ability to make changes and submit for approval. Scroll down to find the link to lookup SIC and select the correct code. After making corrections, select submit at the bottom. Exp. Biz will email once complete.
