The titanium driver has revolutionized the golfing industry and the way many have come to look at equipment. Many of the scores and feats accomplished today, both by the touring pro and weekend warrior, would not be possible without modern advances in the equipment and materials used. The titanium driver is only one part, but a very important part, of this advancement.
One of the main advantages to a titanium driver is its light weight. In fact, weight is often added to the driver in order to give it some added bulk. However, the weight can be added at points that will be most effective for the player. This will help increase both distance and accuracy.
However, while these are all advantages to the titanium driver, the biggest advantage is distance. When golfing, the driver is often the club of choice when a significant distance must be covered. Titanium golf drivers offer greater distance off the tee simply because the face of the driver can be thinner since the material is so durable. A thinner face means there is more flexibility and more propulsion on the ball, due to a trampoline effect.
While there is very little not to like about the titanium driver, there are some drawbacks. Among the most significant of the titanium driver disadvantages is the cost. The equipment is simply not affordable for most golfers, especially beginners, when compared to other types of drivers. Therefore, it may be difficult for many to ever compare what their game may be like with a titanium driver.
The other disadvantage is the length that can be attained even when a bad shot is hit. Due to the fact that titanium drivers will usually hit the ball farther, mistakes can be amplified. In some cases, a ball that may just be hit in the rough in some situations may actually end up out of bounds with a more powerful club. However, this is mitigated somewhat by the club's weighting and the fact a golfer may not feel the need to overhit in order to get more distance.
@Terrificli -- You may change your tune if everyone in your golfing foursome has a titanium driver but you. When they consistently drive the ball farther from the tee than you can, you will be missing owning a titanium club.
I have never liked titanium drivers because they just feel too much like cheating. People who use them magically get more distance and can adjust for problems such as a slice or hook by weighting the club head just right.
The primary point of interest for me was that all the golfers had drivers that were, not surprisingly, physically longer than the persimmon club (yes, even the ladies) and all their shaft weights were lighter than the heavy steel shaft in the persimmon club.
I never played with persimmon drivers, but have hit a few just for fun, with not very good results. If this is what I would have had to play with when I started playing golf, I would not be playing today.
I think if a Ti driver had the same steel shaft and length the wood driver would go farther, not to mention persimmon drivers feel 1000 times better off the face , easier to work the ball compared to this giant thin metal crap we hit today which is cheap as hell to make, wow what a big surprise ha, but they are more durable than wood clubs which was the one thing I didnt like about woodan clubs JORO was right about the game today being all abt frigin distance, in which I think ruins the game , nobody should hit a drive over 300 yards consistantly and even longer than that on tour, alot longer than that, it ruins all the classic courses and takes all the short to average length hitters on tour out of competition which is NOT golf. The golf ball is largely to blame, Im not living in the past Im still young 46 I think , I enjoyed golf so much more woth the balata balls and persimmon woods of the 80s than I have the last 15 yeArs hitting rock balls and big gigantic headed golf clubs with these queer graphite shafts, its rediculous.
Several years ago, when I was first instructed in persimmon, I picked up a Louisville Golf classic fifties series persimmon 3 and 5 wood. LG was/is building those clubs today. MSLP $169.99. I picked mine up in an antique store for $3.00 apiece. LG dissertation was that the persimmons tended to concentrate the end of the shot into a smaller footprint where the titanium tended to widen that landing spot.
Nothing derogatory concerning Titanium, it just lacks that sound that persimmon makes. That, my friends, is sweet.

Well, I bought a new(er) set of irons a few months back (X-20s). They replaced a 15 year old set of Lynx Black Cat irons. I was hoping I would see 10 yards per iron, but i haven't seen any increase in distance. It seems almost exactly the same for solid shots. On the other hand, mishit shots go further than before, but I don't mishit shots very much.
I have tried hitting some of the newer drivers, but they're just too big for me. Love the way a small headed driver looks at address. Plus, I don't think I hit them any longer. And the wife is happier when I buy 10 year old golf equipment.
The 983 is pretty cheap at a local shop, so I may just buy it and experiment with it if I don't like the SH+ driver.

Since my Steelhead is such a satisfying club to hit (love the feel, and the look of the club at address), I decided to buy a Steelhead plus driver off the Callaway PO site. Hoping that it has the same good feel as my steelhead 3 wood, but will be able to give me the same distance as my current driver (hopefully more).

You can absolutely bet the farm that ANYTIME a golfer hits a steel headed 3w as far as a titanium headed driver, the reason is because the driver nowhere near has all the right fitting specs for the golfer. The COR difference alone between a steel head and titanium head automatically gives the Ti head a 10 yard advantage. So since you are not seeing any distance increase with the driver, without question this means that something in the fitting specs, more than likely the length, loft, shaft, total weight, swingweight - do not fit you very well.
If you go hunt down a really good clubfitter, you can be sure a different titanium driver with all the right fitting specs for YOUR swing will hit the ball longer than your steel head wood.

I think you're right. It's probably a mechanics issue related to my swing, but I wonder if it's even a mental issue. The 975D just doesn't look good to me at address. Not sure when it started to "look bad", but I don't have a lot of confidence with it. I don't really slice it/hook it, I just don't hit it far.
If you guys are interested, I'll post some unscientific results next weekend. I guess if I hit the new driver further then it's probably a mental/confidence issue (both clubs are standard OTS drivers).
I feel the OP's pain. I often am often just more comfortable and make better contact with a 3/4 wood. Don't know why, and I have tried drivers from 9.5* to 13* - 43.5" to 45" - lightweight, heavy, etc... I know the problem is between the ears, some days the driver is great.

Stop using the same ole tired analogy of "that's what the pro's play" BS.
Pro's play 400cc+ drivers because of big money endorsement contracts and advertising contracts. They play the new stuff, because they get paid to play the stuff. Remember, a company's primary goal is to make money. They make money by marketing. They use PGA players to "market" their goods. When you see your idol playing whatever brand driver.. you want to run right down to Dick's Sporting Goods, and thrown down $300 for the same driver.
Listen to Tom Wishon who is without a doubt a legend in our industry.
I also fit people for work, and to be honest can't count the amount of time people are afraid of high launching drivers. You need that for overall distance. It is not the height that so much kills the ball on descent and wind.
Modern shafts allow for driver to be played with good initial launch and height but still flatten out to low spin boring trajectory and shallow descent for roll out.
Back when Great Big Berta or 975D were around i'd play the 6.5 and 7.5 models, mainly because there was only the 1 shaft and loft meant everything.
Now with modern sticks I am closer to 8.5-9.5 and a very well fitted shaft.
My honest opinion would be to do some homework and get even a quick fitting.
If 440-460cc size is really not for you (which frankly you ahould warm up to for both distance and forgiveness). There are some great options out there in smaller form with some component makers like Geek Golf. Maybe Wishon too, though I think they've gOne 440-460.
If you want a smaller size, cheap, and very long I would seek out TaylorMade R510 TP In 9.5 loft and look to find somewhat of a Mid Launch shaft and low spin.
But with a fitting I'm sure you would see what the gain potential is.
To give you an Idea, i can outdrive anything I can put up with a 975D using the modern 3 woods like Anser, RBZ, Fast 12 and even a Ping G5. Because the ball speed and shafts are just that good.
Doesn't mean spend a fortune, as even a R5 generation or R7, or say, Callaway FT5 and or Titleist 905 would upgrade you to the USGA COR max. And then a true shaft would have you maxed out for optimal flight.
To give you an example. I've had seniors insist they want 8.5, and leave with 12-14 degrees by the time I am done when they see the overall gain in carry yards and the unaffected spin rate which still gets roll out. Give an old guy 30 extra yards and he listens quick and gives up the theory against "high" ball flight. High launch with optimal spin is ideal, within a certain degree of launch.
The right combo is out there and doesn't have to cost you a fortune. But knowing your numbers on a launch monitor will enable you to seek a combo that flat out work and hits longer.
