Andanother interesting thing is that, unlike you I actually liked "Raavanan" the least of all his films....(by his standards)
Raavanan is the first film Mani has ever made with his usual screenplay/dialogue writer "Sujatha Rangarajan" (who passed away recently) and it showed in the film.....
The reason I love Mani's films is that he is able to create many powerful scenes (impact scenes) which stay with the viewer but in Raavanan, the dialogues were a big let down.....
Anon - Hi!
Thalapathy sounds interesting, I will try to get my hands on it. I am very curious about Mani's early career and also I had no idea he'd done a film with Rajnikanth!
Are you fluent in Tamil? In that case I understand why you might see changes in dialogue or something similar more than I do, as I don't speak the language and have to rely on subtitles. To me Raavanan's appeal was the look and the performances. The plot and the story could be much improved - and yet, I like rewatching it for the performances.
Glad to have found your blog.. Love it..
Coming to Mani.. yes, I too have a complicated relationship with his movies..
One of his strengths is he makes timeless movies.. They never feel outdated. Though Alaipayuthe and Aaytha Ezhuthu were released more than 8 years ago, they feel young and fresh even today..
As Anon pointed out my absolute favourite of his are Mouna Raagam, Agni Nakshatram, Thalapathi, Naayagan (as a kid my mom made me re watch it all the time.. It was a go to movie for my family)..
I have the same feeling about Guru as your review.. Raavanan despite having Vikram's performance and the greate camera work, did not work for me.. The ridiculousness of the costumes, sets, almost clownishness of Karthick and Prabhu's character just did it for me. The people whom he intended to portray do not dress, talk or live in places like he shows. And I feel bad that Mani lost that realism that was required to sell that movie. When I contrast it with a recent movie of a relative new Director Aadukalam, I start feeling if Mani has lost his touch with films.
(Yes, I am a native tamil speaker)
Anon ,
You made my day by posting Thalaphthi's songs.. Ilayaraja :)
