Our goal is to bring together children of all abilities by placing them in Buddy Pairs, where the same two buddies will share quality, structured camp activities throughout the week as they learn more about each other and develop friendships, healthy behaviors, and Christian attitudes.

Buddy Camp is staffed by volunteer professionals who work with children of varying abilities, including nurses, therapists, youth counselors, and many other adult volunteers. Youth from ages 8th grade through college age will serve as Buddy Counselors and each Buddy Pair shall have two counselors assigned to them throughout the duration of camp. Buddy Counselors will assist the campers in many ways, but they will especially serve to promote and nurture relationships, physically assist campers as needed, and guide them through the camp activities so that each camper may fully participate and succeed with confidence and enjoyment. A large volunteer staff of adults lead the many camp activities that will be provided.

Children who would like to participate in Buddy Camp must apply online beginning March 1. Applicants must be 5 years old AND have completed kindergarten through age 11. Enrollment is limited and acceptance is on a first-come, first-served, first-matched basis.

Youth from ages 8th grade through college age are eligible to serve as Buddy Counselors. Counselors are selected based on prior camp experience, application content, leadership qualities, and other characteristics deemed valuable to serving as a role model and mentor for young campers.

Buddy Camp is staffed by volunteers who work with children in many capacities. There is truly something for everyone to do! Use this form to volunteer to help with any of the Buddy Camp sessions this summer.

Thank you for joining us and our woolly mascot Buddy Bison over the past month as we explored national parks across the country. Our last camp adventure this summer is to Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

This week, Camp Buddy Bison features six fun activities for you to enjoy: yoga with a unique twist, an awe-inspiring virtual tour, Jr. Ranger activities, two animal crafts, and an eco-challenge. Complete one or more activities per day.

For our final week of Camp Buddy Bison, we are exploring Great Smoky Mountains National Park located in Tennessee and North Carolina. The park is part of the Appalachian Mountains, a mountain chain that stretches from Alabama to Canada. The Smokies feature some of the highest peaks in eastern North America. The 480 million-year-old mountains were once as high as the much younger summits of the Alps and Rocky Mountains.

This park is one of the most visited because of its numerous hiking trails, waterfalls, abundant plants, and animals, as well as gorgeous overlooks. Check out some of its most popular areas by taking this Google Earth virtual tour.

Over 240 bird species, from soaring hawks to singing warblers, fly through the skies above the Great Smoky Mountains. Each bird has a unique wing shape that matches its lifestyle. Learn about bird wing adaptations with Buddy Bison and build your own sets of wings. You can test them out and observe how wing shapes affect flight.

Historically, people used to eat a lot of foods that were gathered directly from nature. For example, in the Smoky Mountains alone there are eight common berries that can be collected. Today, we can still make good food choices that keep us and the planet strong and healthy. Learn how simple diet changes can lead to a healthier lifestyle that also allows parks and wildlife to thrive!

The Buddy Pegs ride leaders work hard to ensure that all kids individually progress in their skills and double their bike strokes throughout the week! The primary focus of the camp will be on developing balance, early pedaling confidence, a love of two-wheel adventures and just having some FUN!

"Pedal Like a Champ Camp" is a unique biking adventure for young pedalers, welcoming cyclists from all walks of life and catering to a wide range of skill levels. From beginners learning to pedal to those shredding through challenging trails, our vibrant Bicycle Playgrounds provide the perfect backdrop. We champion a space where every aspiring cyclist can evolve and flourish together, be it mastering their first pedal strokes, learning safe street riding skills, or fine-tuning their expertise. Join us for a week of bike adventures, where campers will become pedal pros by mastering skills like braking, gear shifting, safe group riding, and even conquering new terrains based on their ability level. With a mix of on-the-bike and off-the-bike activities, they enhance their biking prowess, learn the secrets of bike maintenance and safety checks, and enjoy bike-themed games while forging lasting friendships. Join us for an exhilarating biking adventure, promising an all-encompassing experience for pedal champions at every level!

Exposing our Athletes to new activities is at the heart of Buddy Up Summer Camp and such experiences could consist of any of the following:

The Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society (LDSS) will be hosting its 14th annual Camp Buddy summer camp for Chatham County on July 10-14 at St. Andrews School, located at 601 Penn Waller Rd, on Wilmington Island.

For over 14 years, the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society has been helping students with Down syndrome enjoy summer fun at Camp Buddy with a customized curriculum designed by special education, occupational, physical, and speech therapists that helps the students retain the information they learned during the previous school year and preparing for the upcoming school year.

Throughout the camp session, occupational, physical, and speech therapy are cleverly disguised as games, and campers participate in activities that promote health and wellness as well as the importance of giving back to the community.

Camp Buddy is sponsored by the Lowcountry Down Syndrome Society and is made possible through the generosity of the community, friends and families of LDSS and events such as the Buddy Walk and Night of Champions. Camp Buddy for Effingham County was held in June. For more information about LDSS, visit www.ldssga.org/

Noppe started Camp Lloyd because her husband, Prof. Lloyd Noppe, lost his father around his ninth birthday. She felt he and his siblings would have benefited greatly if they had someone else to share their grief with.

Camp Lloyd is a weeklong day camp where children can go and learn they are not alone in with their grief. Every summer, grieving kids from Northeastern Wisconsin meet at the Ecumenical Center on the UW-Green Bay campus for fun and games and grief counseling with experts in the field.

UW-Green Bay students receive three internship credits for participating in the camp as a buddy. Student interns usually have aspirations to go on in the counseling field, so the camp gives them valuable experience, Illene said.

Lloyd comes every day. He actually comes and introduces the healing circles and talks about his loss experience. He comes every day and connects with the kids and participates in several of the activities.
