Turn down chunk render distance
The number of rendered chunks grow exponenentially
6 chunk -> 4 has some improvement
8 chunk -> 6 has more improvement
10 chunk -> 8 has even more

I play at two chunk and limit fps to 30 to avoid heating my potato pc

Can you provide your computer specs? I have also had been affect by frames. But 1.17 has been optimize very much. I have a i3 2nd gen processor. My frames changed from 10 to 20 in 1.16.5 to 100-150 fps in 1.17.

I frequently help out on the Discord
Ellutrix King, I have Intel i5 6200U, a low-end sixth generation CPU. Your Desktop i3 processor seems to have higher performance than mine
I am using my integrated graphics Intel 520 HD, and I am getting a 24-30 FPS with 4 chunk render distance.

yeah you seem to have the same problem, the fact is minecraft doesn't  require that much hardware

Minecraft Minimum Requirements
  • CPU: Intel Core i3 3210 | AMD A8 7600 APU or equivalent.
  • RAM: 4 GB RAM.
  • HDD: 180 MB to 1 GB available space.
  • GPU: Intel HD Graphics 4000 or AMD Radeon R5 series | NVIDIA GeForce 400 Series or AMD Radeon HD 7000 series.
  • OS: 64-bit Windows 7 or later.
  • Screen Resolution: 1024 x 768 or better.
these are the minimum while i have a i3-2120 with intergrated it gets atleast 60-120 on win 7 now after upgrading my hdd and getting windows 10 it should be running fine but no. also 50-40fps with a 128x spax texture pack with a 1080p  yt vid  running in the background

and you have much better specs than me yet you are getting 24fps.you should be getting atleast 190-200 fps on an i5-6200u

Software often gets more demanding as you upgrade, because there's often newer hardware that can run faster.

I don't know though. Another google tells me that my GPU is 520% better than yours

And your GPU is also a generation behind the minimum requirement of Intel HD 4000

I'm not sure how to deal with that other than buying a new computer, but maybe trying the following will help.

1. Downgrade minecraft. Maybe your 60FPS result was from 1.12, or 1.7.10. Downgrading Minecraft could get you better results.
2. Turn down your chunk render distance, stick to fast graphics? though you probably already did it.
3. Mod your minecraft with performance improving mods, I prefer Sodium/Lithium/Phosphor, but maybe you can use something else?
4. If you believe Windows 10 is hogging all your resources, then you might want to use Linux. Though I'm not sure if your computer can handle fully graphical linux (I don't think you would like command prompt only) and Minecraft at the same time.

In my opinion, this isn't a problem of Mineshafter, as Mineshafter is the launcher that allows you to play the full version.

You can try to play the demo (as Mojang suggests) to see if you get better performance

Actually, Linux is not bad. I am using linux with minecraft getting 60-80 fps using optifine. I have a i3 3250m, a intel hd 3000 and 8gb ram

Yeah, Linux is usually better compared to Windows 10, in my opinion, though some fancy distros can be slow as well.
