I am making my first foray into using MinecraftEDU for a really truly curricular experience, and I am really excited! Up to this point, I have been running mini MinecraftEDU clubs that run for 3 to 6 weeks, just to get a feel for it. The time has come though, to put that practice to the test!

Using MisterA's Collaborative Build Map as my starting point (thank you!!), I have assigned a famous painting to each group of 4 or 5 students. Their task is to recreate the work of art in their area. They have the option of doing this as pixel art (either as viewed from above or from the side) or creating a "walkable" version of the painting. I am hoping that many students choose the latter, but I wanted to offer a less enormous task for those who are new to using Minecraft, or who might find the concept of creating an environment based on a painting a little more daunting.

Here are a couple of screenshots of the setup - and screenshots of work to follow tomorrow's initial class!

I'd love to hear if anyone else has done something similar in the past :-)

Works in Progress!! I am so thrilled with their work so far, and with the leadership that has been emerging. More to come soon!

Just wanted to share the Tate Worlds - pretty much the same thing you did in your lesson, only by professional map creators.  Might be good as a supplement to this lesson.

I was actually quite inspired by the Tate Worlds to create this assignment. I heard (quite a while ago, and I can't remember the source) that they were being "tweaked" to work in MinecraftEDU. I'd love to use them with my Visual Arts students at some point :-)

Finished products (mostly) and a blog post!

The Great Wave off Kanagawa

Students included NPCs named after themselves in the boats!

Three Cats

I asked students to consider how they could make the cats look "fluffy". They settled on Nether Fences.

The Scream

With real water! And the detail in the sky!!!

Composition #2

Although this one was the simplest, I was impressed by the amount of discussion that went into making sure all of the proportions were correct.

Tahitian Landscape (work in progress)

My newest Minecrafter built the mountain from scratch.

Starry Night (work in progress)

All the detail! All the little houses!
