I'm working with someone who's installing 1.5.1 Build 9, clicking the Update button, and getting the following message:

There was an error.
Error message: UNKNOWN_EDU_VERSION_TYPE
Virheen sijainti
launcher.b.c.b(Unknown Source)
launcher.b.c.run(Unknown Source)
I can install 1.5.1 Build 9 and successfully update to Build 11, so I can't reproduce the error. Does anyone know what the error message means? Is it possible the Update server is located at a URL which may be blocked by a school system firewall?

I think 9 needs to be a fresh install not an update.

Right, that's what we're doing. Install a fresh version of 1.5.1 Build 9 (currently the Latest Build), which seems to work. Clicking Update from there causes the error message in the first post.

Ah. Hmmm. Try again in a different folder maybe?

Curious....how did you score Build 11?  I am downloading Build 9 from the website now....

It's available by update only ( in launcher).

The error occurs because the update system doesn't recognize the version (premium or classroom) of minecraftedu. This information is sent to the server by the launcher so It's possible that the server doesn't get the information. Which version are you using?

It's not me, it's a tech from a school using one of our servers, so my information is second-hand.

He tells me he's installing 1.5.1 Build 9, in a new folder, a fresh install, and then clicking Update and getting the error in my first post. I can create a fresh install of the same build and successfully update to Build 11, so that's why we were thinking perhaps the launcher is trying to access a server address which may be blocked on the school firewall?

When the launcher sends the version information to the update server, what's the address of the update server? Is it something.minecraftedu.com, or is a different domain?

Thank you both. He's able to download the installer from minecraftedu.com, so I'm not sure why the update would be failing. I'll let him know what's been said here and see if we can get more information.

I am trying to upgrade from 1.5.1 build 9 to build 10 or build 11, and every time I try to upgrade from the launcher, it craps out on me at some point.

Anyone else having this problem?

Yeah I did on windows, but not on mac, it is a problem I have not been able to narrow down, but I have a workaround.. Diane, remind me whether you are classroom or premium and I will see what I can do to get you the file to update.

Elfie, one of the schools working on the Urban Planning collaboration is also having a problem updating from 1.5.1 build 9 to build 11, I started a thread about it here. I think they're using Windows 7, and they're getting an error message when they click Update in 1.5.1 build 9. Any chance your workaround might help them as well?

Honestly my workaround was to take the downloaded update file from another computer and put it in the proper directory, then use the update button and not worry about downloading, as that is where the issue was happening for me. We can certainly try it, I take it they are using classroom? If so just copy the file from /minecraftedu/downloads/classroom/1.5.1_11 from a computer that is updated and put it in the same place on those that are having the issue.

Great, thanks! I'll double check their version. If they're using Classroom, we'll give it a try.

If anyone else is having a similar issue of the launcher crashing during download, keep trying, it ended up working in the end for me today, or drop me an email with your receipt number (if you have not done so in the past) and whether you need classroom or premium and I will get you the update file.

Can't you just download it from the members section of minecraftedu.com and then install it over your old installation? You don't need to use the updater.

build 11 is not available that way, only through updating.

There seems to be timeout set to 300 seconds for connections with the new server. We are currently trying to set it to bigger value.

When I click "updates," I get a very long error box.  The Error code is "Could not Download version list."  Is this the same problem as everyone else?  Or is mine a firewall issue?  What web/ip addresses need to be white-listed to make updating possible?

Thanks,
Justin

That is probably a firewall issue. Do you have a proxy you can use?

Justin, I recently asked what needs to be white-listed in order to update from the launcher, and the answer was minecraftedu.com. If you have a friendly network person, ask if they'll watch from their side while you try to update - maybe they're whitelisting www.minecraftedu.com, and it needs to be *.minecraftedu.com? If they watch the network traffic from their side, they'll be able to tell if the launcher tries to connect to an address which isn't whitelisted. I think :)

A proxy server is an easier answer if one is available :)

Argh, the problem seemed to be much harder to fix with out current configurations. Continuing to fix it next monday! Currently if you can download the update before 5 minutes, it should go right. After 5 minutes the connection will be dropped off.

OK my offer still stands for those of you who are trying to update, I have both update files downloaded. You can keep trying on your own if you would like. The other option is to send me an email ste...@minecraftedu.com with your MinecraftEdu receipt number and whether you need classroom or premium and I will shoot you a link and some instructions on how to get the update to work. This is the easiest workaround until the 5 minute timeout is fixed.

I can confirm another school still having the same problem David describes, after the 5 minute connection issue was resolved yesterday.

I do not believe this is a proxy connection type issue as I do not get the error from behind my school proxy. I do however think it may be another issue, I would suggest you send me an email ste...@minecraftedu.com with your receipt details and I will get you a standalone installer for build 11, then you can try updating to 12 just to see whether it is a version specific issue, or something else.

OK folks, if anyone else out there is having similar issues can we please take a bit of a survey, what java version are you running, what is your operating system. This may help Aleksi and Toni track the issue.

Ah, I found a problem with the updating script; it tries to update the version information from server twice and the new server is muuch much faster so it causes few oddities as the version information will be filled into the list twice at the same time! Fixed for the upcoming build.

OK we think it is fixed guys, try updating now, if you are still having issues please let us know and we will see if we can narrow it further.
