I have a little ogg file that we would like to attach to an NPC in a student build.  I thought it seemed easy to unzipped the NPC Mod, stick the ogg file in both the client and the server folder (CustomNPCs>assets>customnpcs>sound>misc>nameoffile.ogg), then zipped the file back up and popped it back into the folders, but when I do so MCEDU server crashes with a java exemption warning regarding the NPC mod.

Am I missing a step or is it not possible to add a sound file to the NPC Mod?  I have tried looking up how to do this with not much luck. :^p

Can I have that exact error please?

I have attached the crash log, of which I am not adept at reading.

Yes but we developers are ^^.

It looks like you didnt properly zip it back together. It's missing files

Thanks, Noppes.  I simply unzipped, stuck the ogg file in and then compressed again.  I am wondering if I need to use a specific app to zip back up.  I was just right-clikc and compress through my mac.  Apparently I am not good at zipping either…heh.

Thanks again,  I'll have to play with it over the summer.

I have run into similar problems Lisa, what you need to make sure you do is compress the files, not the one folder that those files are in, my guess is that you have the zip file being the /directory/files instead of /files

Most zipping programs allow you to just drag the files in. There shouldnt be a need to unzip and zip again.

Mac is weird like that, I have not found a way to do it easily.

Agreed, I haven't unzipped a single mod or RP since using MC.

I just open with a rar program and drop it in.

One thing about Macs thought hat I found, specially with Safari is be careful when downloading..the default options are to unzip the file automatically...

The original fine shouldn't get unzipped during download...it may cause issues.

In safari you have to uncheck the option for auto unzipping friendly files or something.

So I guess at this point what would be the proper steps to add custom music to an NPCs and if this is not possible where would the best place be to look at other resources or places or other topics in the google group to learn how to add custom music?

Here was the scenario: a student built a replica of the mos eisley cantina from Star Wars for his area of a 3rd grade project. He wanted music to play inside the cantina. I helped him with his desire to have three NPCs playing instruments inside the cantina and he wanted to have them playing music. I could not find how to do this with the disc player but did know you could associate sounds with the NPCs just not how to make them custom sounds. That seemed like the easiest place to add music but it required adding that sound file to the NPC mod. Hope that makes sense.

In 1.6 there are 3 ways to add music
  • The first one was adding it to the customnpcs.zip, but that apparently does not work for you
  • Create or add it to a resource pack in an assets/customnpcs/music folder.
  • Put it in the minecraftedu/customnpcs/assets/customnpcs/music folder

Hey Lisa,

As Noppes said those are the three ways. I went through this with him when I was trying to find a good way to have NPC Skins used.

Just my 2 cents, the best way of the three is the Resource Pack. Let me explain why...

Option 1:
  • Put it in the minecraftedu/customnpcs/assets/customnpcs/music folder
I found that when I would install a new version (Being a tester that is like every week) and I would forget that there were custom files under the following folder. Of course then I would boot up a map and get the dreaded purple and black skins all over!

Option 2:
  • The first one was adding it to the customnpcs.zip, but that apparently does not work for you.
Although this option fixes the issue of Option 1, it causes problems when you share your worlds or as we have been doing lesson shares. Plus it gets a bit confusing when you have the CustomNPCs 1.62-1.64.zip and then you all log into the server only to find yours is a custom version of the mod. I found this option to be incredibly painful at many points because of this.

Option 3:
  • Create or add it to a resource pack in an assets/customnpcs/music folder.
For anyone that customizes the game for specific maps be it themes, or music, or skins, etc..This is definitely the way you will want to go. For one, I ALWAYS remember to move over my Resource Pack...since the vanilla game is so darn ugly to me. Second, you have the freedom in a resource pack to customize without changing any mod core files, making it easier to just tell people to go get x version of the mod and it should work. Finally, once 1.7 and/or 1.8 comes out, you will be able to load multiple resource packs on top of one another. So I want Shane's Egypt Theme Skins RP, plus I want to add Lisa's Star Wars Music RP, and I want it all loaded overtop of SpahxPureBD. The order in which you load them will dictate which takes priority. So if mine only has customs skins, and yours only has music...it would all work out.

Anyway, I know that is a long winded explanation, but I figure I would share how I plan to future proof my stuff so that I do not have a bunch of custom mods or folders to move around.

Hope that makes sense...and helps.

Thanks Noppes and Shane.  This does make much more sense.  I will play around with some of this over the summer.
