Hey all,

My students are wrapping up their first big project building Medieval Manors, it's been epic. I'll have a video on Youtube tomorrow or Thursday of their work. Our experience with MCedu gets better every day.

When I have about 20 students on my local classroom server the advanced settings tab will read: [Warning] Can't keep up. Did the system time change or is the server overloaded?

I'm guessing my server is overloaded since I didn't change the time. Any advice on how not to 'overload' the server while having 20+ students on at once? I'm running a windoze Intel Pentium 4 3.5 ghz with 4gb ram.

Thanks!

I'll be curious if anyone has a good answer for this. Googling around, that message seems to happen to a lot of people, and there's no definitive answer why, or no solution saying "it's caused by X and can be solved by Y."

It may be simply RAM related, both how much the computer has and how much you allocate to Java when you launch MinecraftEdu. It may also have to do with having other processes running at the same time? I'm really not sure, but most threads talking about it say something to the effect of "if your players aren't complaining about lag, you probably don't have to worry about the message."

I've seen it on every server I've run.

It simply means the processor of the server computer is being overloaded and is causing lag. It happens more often when the RAM is being used up. A restart of the server (after saving the map!) helps.

It also depends on how far spread the students are, and if they are generating new terrain at the time. It is the terrain generation that really taxes a server, for example, the other day I had 3 people on a server with 3gb RAM, 2 of us went off exploring in new areas, the other stayed at home and was suffering severe lag. So my suggestion would be to a) fly around yourself when no-one else is on the server and generate new terrain, or b) try to bring the students back to a central area and see if that fixes it.

Hi Chris,
We're running the minecraft server on a HP DL385. Dual 2.6 GHz Opteron processors and 16GB of RAM....and we get the overload messages as well.

Try increasing the ram amount for the server if you already haven't done so. The ram amount setting in servertool doesn't work at the moment but you can run the server from command line.

1) Open command line or terminal or whatever you like to call it.
2) Navigate to the server folder minecraftedu\servertool\server\
3) Start the server with this: java -Xmx2048M -Xms2048M -jar minecraftedu_server.jar
Replace both of the "2048" with what ever ram amount you want to allocate.

Hey Toni, if my server has 2.5 gigs of RAM, what numbers should I put in? I have heard that Java only recognizes certain numbers (I couldn't just put in 2500, for example).

Should it be 2560? Or should it be lower?

Yeah you can play it safe and use numbers that can be divided by 8. Also don't allocate all of the memory on your machine. If you got 2,5G of ram in your machine don't put it all in the use of minecraft :)

Anyone getting a fatal error when increasing the server RAM? Default it's 1024, I'd like to bump it up to at least 2048. Windows OS with 4 gb of ram available.
I've typed in 2048 in the server RAM section, saved settings, then I get fatal error. I've played with lots of multiples of 8 as suggested earlier in this post, but no luck.

Ideas?

Thanks,

Chris Scott

What version of MCEdu? I don't think I've touched RAM settings in quite a while.

The version might be the problem here, I know there was a bug that would not set the ram correctly in the launcher, but I am pretty sure it was fixed in some of the later versions.

Hey Chris,

I had this problem at one point, but after updating it has gone away. Currently I am playing with 1.5.1 build 15.

Shane

Remember that all the clients will have to be updated too, or they won't connect.

Where can I get build 15?  I am still having the server overload issue and have the same issue described regarding the fatal error when trying to increase the RAM.

Hit the "updates" button on the launcher and make sure to select build 15.

Hey guys, I have got a batch file working, which starts my server using 4GB of ram using the commands provided by Toni - only thing is that it starts the server directly (oh der!). How can I choose which world the server will load from a command line??

Or does it load a default world - which i possibly can change somewhere???

Hope this makes sense.

Cheers

Luke

Ok figured it out!

I simply changed the "level-name=" in the server config file and it loads which ever world is on the end of that path string.

Good solution!  But to answer your original question, by default a server run from a batch file or command line will load up the world in:
\minecraftedu\ServerTool\worlds\tmpworld

In other words, whatever was the last map played.

Thanks Joel!

Might be easier to just load up a world normal way - then hop out and run the batch file which should reload the world, but with more RAM allocated.

Cheers
