Multiple Worlds On Same Server

What is the best/easiest way to have multiple worlds on the same MCEdu server? Maybe Mystcraft? We only have one computer to use as the server, and I want to make it so that students can go to one of four world maps. They don't need to go to all of the worlds, just to the one that their team is assigned.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

I have the exact same situation, and I have been looking around for good ways of doing this. Even though I have not tried it yet, for me it seems like Mystcraft have what is required. Check out Shane wonderful video where he is showing how to implement worlds to his Momilani server.
http://youtu.be/mLStu0tJrac

Thee thing I have not sorted out however is how to implement e.g. Math world's, where the students are going to build stuff just for the period, then for it it to be cleared for the next group of students. Like Shanes graphing map for example. It would be amazing games to put it in my world, and when my class was finished I could just "reboot" it.

Hey Randall,

There are a few ways to do this.

1. If your server setup is beefy enough, you can run separate instances of the servertool with a different port number at the end for each world. I am guessing that your server isn't beefy enough to run 4 of them though.

2. Certainly you can use Mystcraft to create several worlds off of a main world. I do this all the time with my setup. Word of caution though, I've never had students in more than 2 worlds at a time for long sessions. So I have no idea how 4 worlds would go, you might find it sort of laggy. Now if you are talking about having 4 worlds, but not having students in each concurrently...then you will be fine. I have 23 worlds off my main world using Mystcraft...HHmm..I wonder if there is a limit to the number of worlds I can have.

If you go the route of Mystcraft, here are a couple tips.
1. Turn off instability in the core config file for Mystcraft...this will save you a ton of headaches trying to find a stable world. They will all be stable.
2. Make your worlds individually, then import them using my video into your Mystcraft World. This is only if you ever wanted to upload your worlds to the public for use. Otherwise...you can just build in the world..it doesn't matter.
3. NEVER EVER cross the streams! No just kidding...but it is a good practice to not put a MCEdu Spawn Block in a Mystcraft Age. Remember that you are doing all of this in one world...so sometimes the system will get confused when you change the primary spawn point.
4. Use Mystcraft Portals to teleport kids tot he worlds...not the books. Far less hassle.

@Hal

Let me explain how I do what you just suggested.

I have many worlds where I do not necessarily want students to "mess it up" permanently...so the best advice I can give you is...learn to world edit...not saying you don't know how...just that it is your best friend.

So on the graphing zone map, where the kids have to go out and harvest wood. I have a schematic of the wood farm, and in between rounds..I will load the schematic...and paste it..so the next round it is brand new.

As for the kids farming wood in the forest...I use a wood shovel in my hand...and I use the command //tree random, now whenever I right click on a spot a random full grown tree pops up. I can repopulate both the wood farm and the forest in less than a minute.

Once the kids have graphed everything...there is a big wad of wood logs on the graphing zone...so to clear that, I use //sel extend and i select the extremes of the wood...then I use //set 0 and poof..there is no more wood on my graphing pads.

So the ways I reset maps are as follows:
1. Don't save the map after they use it. (Only if you don' care about keeping anything)
2. Schematics
3. World Edit commands like //tree or //set 0

Hope that helps both of you. If not let me know...and I am sure there is another solution that will fit.

Thanks Shane! Looks like I'll dive into Mystcraft after checking out your how-to video. Will have to see how it goes with students in all 4 worlds.

In the past I have moved one world into a mystcraft world.  However, I was not able to get this working recently.

With Mystcraft 10.10 or 10.12 has anyone been able to move worlds?

I would love to make a flat world with portals to all my other worlds, and worlds I use. (including WoH).

Has anyone been able to copy worlds recently?  Have any advice?

That video is fantastic.  I think it was the final motivation I needed to dive into Mystcraft.  Thanks for sharing.

Do you have, or can you recommend, a good video about the basics of Mystcraft?  I could infer a lot from the previous video, but it would be good to have a primer on the whole crafting books, etc.

Thanks again,
Justin

Hey Justin,

I will be on break next week, I am sure I can put together something for you in a video form.

I watched Direwolf20's video when I first started, but I believe it is for an older version of Mystcraft.

Let me see what I can do this week / weekend.

Let me know what kind of things you are interested in me being more detailed about. I can also just go from...beginning to end if that would help.

Thanks for the assistance.  I've spent more time today working on MystCraft than I'd like to admit, and I've finally gotten pretty decent at the grammar of age building.

My interest in MystCraft comes from my desire to have teams work on a survival island map I've created.  I was hoping to duplicate the map in 4 ages and have students head through the appropriate portal when they arrive in world.  So far, so good.  I'm duplicated the survival island in two different ages.  My current issue is that when I teleport to the relevant part of the age to my survival island, I start to lag significantly.  We've got beefy new computers, and even with settings turned down, it's painful.

Have you noticed performance issues with Mystcraft?

Playing with it is the best way to figure it out.

I notice a spike when we teleport, then after that it is fine. We do not see any lingering effects of the teleport afterwards.

Make sure you do not have spawn blocks in the ages...just in the overworld.

Maybe some more details about when it lags..and what you are noticing. Check out the servertool and see what it is saying.

Just curious Shane, what's the largest number of ages you have been able to handle running simultaneously?

I would say that I havent really played in multiple ages simultaneously...on purpose. I have had students in the over world and in an age many times without much issue. I could certainly try and report back...if you give me the details of what is being tried.

Don't worry about testing anything on my account.

So, for whatever reason, my Ages are working nice and smooth this morning.  Maybe that was Minecraft's way of telling me to go do something else!

One thing that I realized is that I had made copies of the Descriptive Book for my age and put it in four different portals.  What I should have done was create four copies of the notebook and then four distinct descriptive books.  Otherwise, all four portals led to the same dimension, which was contrary to the point.

We have state testing this week, so I'm not sure if I'm going to be able to test having students in all four dimensions simultaneously, but I will update you all as soon as I do.

Ah yeah...copying the same book would just get them into the same world. Definitely you want to make separate books / ages then use my vid to copy your world into Div2 - Div5 region data.

I ran a limited test today with 12-13 students spread across four Ages.  The Memory use spikes when they portal to the age, but I think it's going to be manageable.

Between 7.5 - 27 KB/s download speeds on the medium quality mp4 download. Thank you!

I just loaded up the Graphing Zone today, and the students are having a blast. However, in the wood harvesting area, how does one reset the wood in the building between the different types of axes? I've just been having the student fill in the blocks and then harvesting them again.

Yep.  Or you can use the build tools to replace the logs with "nothing" which will erase them.

Hey Wahiawa!

So glad your kids are liking the map. I am very happy how tht one turned out and I look forward to making more upgrades to it.

Definitely the best way to fill in the missing wood is using the teacher build tools and fill it back up. Have a wood block in your hand...click the two extreme corners..and poof it will fill with wood.

Hope that helps.
