Here are some mods that work well with MinecraftEdu.  Installation instructions are included with the zip files.

Download the Server.zip and Client.zip from here:

https://drive.google.com/folderview?id=0B4sZS8sZhpOPQTBiSDMtN2Y0Qms&usp=sharing

For the most part it is an easy install, just copy and paste into the mod folders.

Only Biomes o’ Plently needs a bit of setup to get working, but it’s well worth the extra couple of steps.

I have included information about all of the mods along with links to the original files.

I am putting together a biomes activity to teach ecology and conservation with these mods. When I first encountered Minecraft my first thought was how useful it would be in teaching earth sciences. This biomes project has been in the planning stage for some time as my focus has been mainly on reinforcing grade 2 -5 math concepts (distance, measurement, fractions, arithmetic, equations and problem solving). Now with all the available mods out there I can no longer leave the idea on the shelf. At the moment I am keeping things simple, in the future I would like to incorporate more science lessons in geology, biology, chemistry, physics, astronomy, etc.

Super Biomes Lesson Plan:

Subject: Science - Ecology

Grades: For elementary or middle school students

Learning Objectives:

Students demonstrate understanding of what is a biome and how they differ from each other.

Students will learn about the many biomes of the world, what the conditions are and what kinds of plants and animals live there.

Conservation and sustainability are topics of discussion as students learn that every biome is vulnerable.

Skills:

Observation and writing skills as students make notes in their field journal during the activity.

Cartography and orienteering skills are taught while exploring and charting the world.

Student exercise their research skills as they use online resources to learn more about the biomes they have found in Minecraft.

Activities:

The goal is to create a Biome Garden. Students explore the world looking a new biome, when one is found they will write observations in their field journal and collect samples.

This is made easier with the the backpacks mod as students can organize their specimens and label their backpacks with the names of the biomes. (displayed with F3 button)

The Biome Garden is a large enclosure divided into many sections. In each area students will build a biome exhibit using the samples collected while exploring.

For example, a desert biome exhibit would include sand, sandstone and cacti, a forest biome would include indigenous trees along with flowers and plants.

Using information from their field journals students will create a sign for each exhibit describing the biome.

To increase the challenge have the students talk to in-game characters to acquire the tools they need to collect samples.

Eg.: Find the dwarf who has a superior digging tool, find a shepherd with sheers - great for leaves and sheep.

Students are rewarded as they complete each exhibit. They can work together or individually.

Extra prizes are available when students create maps and label the biomes (bibliocraft mod). This will result in a large seamless wall map with waypoints that can be found in the world by using compasses calibrated from the map.

Outside of the game student can write a report comparing real world biomes with the ones found in Minecraft.

They can also discuss the impact of logging, strip-mining, pollution and other human activities have on these environments.

This lesson is intended to be an “ever-growing” project. As students find more biomes and complete exhibits they earn rewards that enable them to explore the world further to find more biomes and complete more exhibits.

Students can periodically film virtual tours for a Youtube series showcasing their work.

Mo’Biomes

Biomes o’ Plenty - adds new biomes, many are accurate and some are fantasy - new foods and mobs along with a whole new dimension

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1495041-16x-forge-biomes-o-plenty-v112-1-year-anniversary/

Wiki: http://biomesoplenty.wikia.com/wiki/Biomes_O%27_Plenty_Wiki

*To make sure new biomes generate: Launch server, then goto MinecraftEdu/ServerTool/server folder, open server.properties file, set level-type=BIOMESOP

*Turn on achievements to motivate exploration: on client computers goto MinecraftEdu/minecraft folder, open minecraftedusettings.ini and set showachievements=true

Then create a new single player world on the client computer, this is required to get the achievements to show on multiplayer.

ExtrabiomesXL - adds new biomes with trees (like Redwood forest) and flowers (make dye)

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1090288-164-extrabiomesxl-3142/

Wiki: https://github.com/ExtrabiomesXL/ExtrabiomesXL/wiki

*If there is a server error with Biome ID conflict - Replace the current config file with the one included in the Extrabiomes Config folder.

Goto: MinecraftEdu/ServerTool/server/config/extrabiomes folder and replace the extrabiomes.cfg file with the new one from the this file.

Or you can edit the config file (always make a backup first): open extrabiomes.cfg file, change Biome IDs to higher numbers, such as 255, etc. this will also resolve a conflicts

Natura - adds new biomes, “craft-able” wood to make coloured items and different door styles. New trees (even in the nether), weapons, armour and mobs

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1753754-16xnatura/

Wiki: http://ftbwiki.org/Natura

*all mods can be configured to turn on or disable different Biomes. Goto: MinecraftEdu/ServerTool/server/config/ and open a config file with a text editor. e.g.: MinecraftEdu/ServerTool/server/config/

biomesoplenty folder, open terraingen.cfg to edit where villages can spawn, open biomgen.cfg to adjust biome generation settings. This works for other mods as well - you can “tweak” any different settings. For changes to take effect, reload minecraft on server and client computers.

Mo’Stuff: Bibliocraft

Functional furniture and shelves - Decorate buildings, shelves to organize potions, equipment and of course books!

Printing Press - save and load written books - create plates and print copies on a working press

Tape measure that works in meters or blocks - great for math activities or planing build (or both). Students can measure the depths of an ocean, how tall a tree is or how thick is a glacial ice sheet

Map tools for hanging maps - create huge seamless wall maps, mark waypoints and use a new compass to find them. Students can chart their explorations and share them with others.

Clipboards & More - Multipage lists (like books) with checkboxes of three states (blank, check and x)

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1680480-162164forgesmp-bibliocraft-v150-bookcases-armor-stands-shelves-printing-presses-seats-map-frames-and-more-updated-10162013/

Bibliocraft Website: http://www.bibliocraftmod.com/

Bibliowoods - Biome woods addon - add support for biome mods, craft furniture from exotic woods

Bibliowoods webpage: http://www.bibliocraftmod.com/?page_id=50#bibliowoods

Mo’Paintings

Painting Selection Gui - Easily select paintings, just type /painting while the cursor is over the artwork and a selection screen will pop up.

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1897999-164forge-painting-selection-gui-hassle-free-paintings/

*Requires Gui Lib to be installed on Client computers ONLY:

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1909236-164forge-davidees-gui-library-create-better-guis-updated/

Paintings ++: More paintings to choose from. Different layouts available in the settings, customize templates to include student artwork or famous paintings.

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1617109-162-subarakis-paintings-no-more-bugs/

This mod uses a different artwork file located outside of the resource pack - to use custom paintings: unzip Paintings ++ 1.6.4 v1.zip, goto to assets/subaraki/art/ folder, choose the png file that matches the layout settings in the configuration file. The default used is gib.png, other templates are available in the same folder. They can be opened and modified in with a graphics editor. Re-zip the mod folder and replace the old version of the mod on both the client and server computers. Reload minecraft (client and server) to reflect the new changes.

To change the layout style of the artwork on the Client computers goto: MinecraftEdu/minecraft/config folder, open PaintingsMod.cfg with text editor, change one of the options under paintingsmode to true, set all others to false.

The default is Gibea=true - only change this if you have made a custom art pack using a different layout (like Insane, Sphax, or TinePics)

Mo’ Enhancements

Craft Guide - Look up recipes for everything, uses filters to make searching easier - set key config to open craft guide, e.g.. “R” key - client only mod

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/731133-162164-craftguide-v1674/

Backpacks - adds backpacks to the game - Open Backpack: right-click, Name Backpack: shift+right-click, Wear Backpack: shift+B (or whatever the backpack key is set to in the options)

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1492661-15x-16x-backpacks-v-11817/

Rei’s MiniMap - adds corner map with waypoints - customizable - goto: MinecraftEdu/minecraft/mods/rei_minimap/

Change localhost.DIM0.points to the server IP to get labels to work on multiplayer - e.g.: 123.456.789.DIM0.points

Change key-config and other settings in the options file

Client only mod

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/482147-162-jul08-reis-minimap-v34-01/

CustomNPCs - add interactive characters, create quests, item shops, etc.

Developer's Website: http://www.kodevelopment.nl/minecraft/customnpcs/

Animal Bikes - ridable pets make great rewards - edit the config file to enable more bikes.

Developer's Website: http://www.kodevelopment.nl/minecraft/animalbikes/

Treecapitator - Add more natural behaviour when “logging” - chop one block with an ax and the whole tree falls. This mod makes it easy to see the affects of clear-cutting and conservation. Adjustable settings in the config file, can also edit extra biomes config file to increase the chance of automatic sapling replanting.  Very useful with biome mods as it quickly takes down huge trees.

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1009577-164-daftpvfs-mods-treecapitator-ingameinfo-crystalwing-startinginv-floatingruins/

Shaders - Adds GLSL shaders to client computers, different shaders can be selected the options screen. Even slower computers are capable of some enhancements. Client only mod

MC Forum: http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1924484-162-glsl-shaders-for-minecraft-162/

Mo’Shaders

On client computers copy to MinecratEdu/minecraft/shaderpacks folder (all shaders go here)

Water Fix - Sometimes fixes the outlines on waving water - includes two versions, one  with no waving leaves to reduce lag (and nausea)

Chocopic13-WaterFix.zip: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4sZS8sZhpOPZ2NhYWE2RktwVUk/edit?usp=sharing

WOH Shaders - shaders that come with World of Humanities installation

Shaders from WOH.zip: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4sZS8sZhpOPa2kzYV9SX0szd1U/edit?usp=sharing

Shader Packs - Many different shaders to choose from

Shader Pack 1: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4sZS8sZhpOPRlJXc2lsUVM0Y3M/edit?usp=sharing

Shader Pack 2: https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4sZS8sZhpOPaVJMZm9sTHFEc0k/edit?usp=sharing

Any thoughts or suggestions for additional mods would be appreciated. Let me know if there is any problem getting things setup.

Thank you! Sorry for the typos, it turned into a long post.

I realize the wiki would have been a more suitable place, but I wasn’t sure where to put it.

Perhaps its time for a "FTBEdu" wiki?

Haha, you're totally speaking my language! Do you play Feed The Beast?

I'll admit I'm torn between wishing educators would dive headfirst into Feed The Beast and fearing the support requests which might come out of encouraging FTB :)

One of the activities I've considered for the Minecraft in Education series was hosting a Feed The Beast server, but I'm not sure how many people might benefit from it? I could set one up in a minute, and I'll play the heck out of it myself, but I'd prefer to do it if I thought there was a broader benefit for the community. Or even if we could get a couple people on board to record videos about the educational possibilities a full Feed The Beast server might provide? I'm willing to consider it.

And I really want to make Shane try it, because I think he'd make incredible things there, but also because I like it when he sounds scared about something :) Shane, I've seen what you do with Command Blocks and redstone - FTB is nothing in comparison to what you're already doing.

Is there a lot of overlap between the three biome mods?

I liked the idea of natura, but found it to overlap to much with extrabiomesxl and forestry.  Checking the config files, I couldn't easily turn on and off the items I wanted.  Specifically, I would like to use only the nether items.

Great idea about treecapitator.  Hadn't thought of using it for conservation.

I know there were some conflicts in Feed the Beast with Biomes O' Plenty and item ID's for another mod, and I think it's possible with multiple biome mods. The readme files and FAQ's for each mod usually do a good job of identifying what plays well together, and what requires adjustments.

I think I added Biomes O' Plenty to Feed The Beast, and the BoP readme noted the item ID's that would need changing. It wasn't complicated to make the changes - it was a little more challenging to realize changes needed to be made, if that makes any sense.

The biomes seem to spawn next to each other without without overlapping. Natura doesn’t really add new biomes like the other mods, rather it adds flora to exiting ones. There is a disabler section in the config file now so you can turn off individual trees.

Treecapitator is a really useful mod in a number of ways, for education and general server upkeep…no more floating trees! I forgot to mention that it needs the supporting mod bspkrsCore to function. The file is in the mod pack, but if your adding things individually, make sure to copy both of them to your mod directory.

I usually do not have conflicts installing the mod pack, though on one server I had a biome id issue with BoP and ExtraBiomes. I included an extrabiomes config file in the mod pack incase this happens, just copy it over. I can help if there are other id issues - yup its a pain.... <_>

Rick,

I haven’t tried FTB with MinecraftEdu, I’ve just been adding individual mods as I need them. A regular server would work too I suppose.

I was thinking a knowledge base could be put together for using mods in the classroom, specifically ones that are compatible with MinecraftEdu. Maybe not just FTB mods, since there are so many out there, but it would be helpful with the server project.

There's no FTBEdu version, I was just dreaming :) But since Feed The Beast and MinecraftEdu both use Forge, there's no reason you couldn't try to manually assemble a package.

Well, other than the incredible amount of work it would take to get it all running right together!

I think your approach is best for the classroom, adding only the mods you need for the lessons you're trying to teach. And if you're looking for a list of mods compatible with MinecraftEdu, the MCF Mod List is wonderful. Remember to choose the version of MinecraftEdu you're running, and remember MCEdu didn't work with Forge before version...1.5.1, build 9? Something like that?

Look for the thread here about MyTown, I think it's similar. Towny is a Bukkit mod, and MCEdu runs on Forge, so they're not compatible.

Sorry for the short reply, I was at work and in between tasks. This is the MyTown post I was talking about, and there's a thread at the Minecraftforums as well where it's compared to Towny. It doesn't look like it's been updated to 1.6.4 yet though.

Ah you beat me to it! I had been working on getting MyTown 1.6 to work on and off over the last week and finally got it working on Friday afternoon. The test now will be to see whether it is compatible with ForgeEssentials in this new version.

Craig

P.S - Dont forget to change I:MinDistanceFromAnotherTown=50 in MyTown.cfg to something like 1 to 5, as this is how many chunks (16x16 blocks) apart towns need to be. Meaning if someone has made a town you would have to move 50 chunks away from that town to create a new town.

I'm glad its working for you! I would consider it a "must-have mod" for running a constant server as it provides ant-griefing protection for student areas. Thank you for mentioning the MinDistance setting again...really important! I wonder if ForgeEssentials would solve some of the problems with getting other mods to work, functioning as a "bridge" between Edu and other forge mods. Just a thought....please let me know how it goes.

Greetings,

I tried downloading and following your directions for these mods, but have been mostly unsuccessful. The achievements work, but nothing else does. A few questions about Biomes and Recipes:

  1. Do I just generate a random world to start with the server tool?
  2. How do I know if the Biomes mods are working? What will I see in the game that I didn’t see before? I changed the text file to BIOMESOPO as per the instructions.
  3. Recipe Guide: When I am in crafting mode, and press R, nothing happens. How can I troubleshoot?
  4. In the server folder, there was no “mods” folder so I created one and copied items from the .zip file. Is that correct?
I’m still learning about mods, and am intimidated to use them since they usually just mess up my configurations and I wind up having to reinstall MC EDU.

Currently I’m testing on a MacBook Air that is serving as both server and client until I know everything works, then I’ll start copying to the Computer Lab Server and the 30 client machines I have in my lab.

Any advice, guidance, etc. is appreciated.

Thanks,
Joel S.

Hello Joel,

I would agree, mods can be intimidating when you first start using them. I’m hoping they will not “break” you or your MCEdu. :)

It's great you got the achievements working and changed the level-type to BIOMESOP in the server.properties file, that’s probably the hardest part.

To answer your questions:

Q1. Do I just generate a random world to start with the server tool?

A1. Yes, its best to create a new world since the biomes are added as the world generates. Of course it can be used with existing worlds, but you would have to wander pretty far to get Minecraft to generate a new chunk. It’s much easier to create a new world.

Q2. How do I know if the Biomes mods are working? What will I see in the game that I didn’t see before? I changed the text file to BIOMESOPO as per the instructions.

A2.  There are a few ways to tell if the mod is loaded and working. When the server starts, in the Advanced window, Minecraft will tell you what mods are being loaded. Here is a screenshot…I have a big stack of mods and I can check to make sure they have loaded properly with this window:

Once the server has started up, you can log on the world and look for new biomes.

Pressing the F3 button (or fn + F3) will bring up info like co-ordinates and the name of the Biome you are in.

If you switch to creative mode you should be able to see all the mod items under different tabs.

Because you have the achievements working, you can check this screen to see if the Biomes O’ Plenty section is there. By clicking the “Minecraft” button, it will toggle the BOP achievement screen:

After clicking the Minecraft button:

Click the Biomes O'Plenty button to return to regular Minecraft achievements.

While exploring the world, if the new biomes are generating they should be recognizably different than regular Minecraft biomes. Plus an achievement will pop up on your screen when you wander into a BOP biome. “Achievement get! Mystic Grove” or something like that…

Q3. Recipe Guide: When I am in crafting mode, and press R, nothing happens. How can I troubleshoot?

A3. You do not need to be in crafting mode to use the recipe guide. It works in regular game play, not at the crafting bench…I probably should have clarified that.. :)

If nothing happens when you press R, check the Controls settings in the options screen and try changing R to a different key. If the crafting guide does not appear to be installed at all, make sure the mod file CraftGuide-Mod-1.6.4.zip is in the client’s folder only…not the server’s mod folder.

Q4. In the server folder, there was no “mods” folder so I created one and copied items from the .zip file. Is that correct?

A4. Yes, mods folder should be created if it is not there already. The new folder should be: mods/1.6.4/

Create a new folder called “mods” then create a “1.6.4” folder inside of it. All mods go in here. The structure should look like this:

Server

Client

Don't worry about the rei_minimap folder, it is created automatically if you install the mod.

As for testing, I also start with my Macbook then install things on the main server once the bugs have been ironed out. Hopefully your experiments are successful.

Good luck!

Hey Guys,

This has been immensely helpful.  I'm up and running with My Town.  One thing I'm not seeing int he vast amounts of documentation surrounding this mod is how (if?) I could give students more "blocks" so they could claim adjacent squares and make their town larger.

Do you guys have any thoughts on this?

Thanks so much,
Justin

Hey Justin,

It is hidden away under the Town Assistant commands section:

extraBlocks can be set by the admin command /ta extra <town> <count>. It can be both positive and negative. Whatever the admin feels like doing to the town plot count.

Also you could change nationAddsBlocks in the config then just have everyone turn their town into a nation, that would give everyone extra chunks to claim without you having to assign them manually.

nationAddsPerResident and nationAddsBlocks are defined in the config. Default is 0.

Hey Craig,

I actually saw that eventually, but I couldn't get any of the /ta commands to work.  I figured it had something to do with "admin" status, but I couldn't figure it out.  I Oped myself, signed in as a teacher, and then tried to play with the PEX Permission files, but I just couldn't make it work.

Have you had success with those commands?

Thanks for the assist,
Justin

I got the mods to show up on my test machine, but still have some questions.

1. The crafting guide is a bit confusing to me. How do I use it? If I want to craft a basic item, like a pickaxe, how do I find it using the crafting mod?
2. I don't see any NPCs in the random world I started. Is there something I need to "turn on" to get them to show up? And how do I use them once enabled? I'd love to have my kids interact with NPCs during gameplay, who can serve as guides and reminders of what they need to do.
3. The backpacks show up in my inventory, but I don't know how to put items in the backpack, or take items out.

Sorry I'm so needy. I'm new to this whole MOD thingy and think it has some great potential for future MC Edu sessions I do with kids.

We can certainly look into it, it is a matter of getting the google group itself to behave in an intuitive way that makes the information easy to find. That is why the FAQ post has stalled, we are investigating the best way to move this forward currently.

I've tried this, downloading all files and placing them appropriately - however all I get is a crash and in a nutshell: Caused by: java.sql.SQLException: no SQLite library found.

However the data.db is there in the correct location, which is also correctly defined in the MyTown.cfg. If I remove it, or start with a vanilla installation with MCEDU 1.6.4 & MyTown MyTown-1.6.1.13.jar, no data.db file is created.

So far i've tried various versions of MyTown, a fresh MCEDU 1.6.4 install, copying a data.db from another server, creating a new data.db, starting MCEDU without a data.db file, changing the path (didn't like that much), changing the permissions on the minecraftedu directory...and each time I get the same error, except when I changed the path, which complained abotut he path not existing. So now I'm out of ideas.

Any ideas?

Cheers,
Dustin

Oh dear, I've left some threads dangling! I would only temporarily abandon my post for good reason...I was preparing for a very exciting meeting last Friday. I successfully introduced MinecraftEdu to an elementary school in my community. Now they are very interested in starting an after-school club. We suggested the idea to the students who would be involved and they really surprised the teachers with their knowledge. They recognized most of mods I'm using and the questions they asked on how the multiplayer world would work were really excellent. In fact, I think they sold the idea better than I did! :)

One of the most common questions I hear is "What about the girls, they don't play Minecraft..its more for the the boys". Well that pre-conception was destroyed as I was overwhelmed by a group of excited young ladies eager to tell me about their adventures in Minecraft. Plus they asked if I worked for Mojang...LOL! No...not even MinecraftEdu...but there is no reason they couldn't one day...perhaps in another 10 years there will be more women in the technology field. Fancy that...it warms me ole'heart!
Since then I've been following up with information and resources and catching up on everything I've been neglecting for a week! Whew!
Now...back to makin it work...!

 Dustin,

I am sure I had the same problem with the data.db when I first tried to install MyTown. If I recall it was because I forgot to put the MyTownLib.jar in the mods directory along with forgeperms-1.6.5.jar and MyTown-1.6.12.jar. Are all three of these files in the server mods folder? Sorry this sounds like an overly simple question after you spent all that time with complex config. I would like to try and replicate the error again, so I'm just covering the basics.

For the MyTown problem, I breifly had the same problem with the data.db error...but for the life of me I can't remember how I fixed it....
Did you download the package here or did you get it from the Minecraft forum!

Yup, I remember for sure now and I think just replicated the error. On a clean install, I added forgeperms-1.6.5.jar and MyTown-1.6.12.jar to the mod folder without the MyTownLib.jar file. Catastrophic server crash with log:
Caused by: java.lang.ClassNotFoundException: org.sqlite.JDBC

When I add the missing file everything starts up without an error. As for the config files and db files, they should be automatically created for you when the mod loads. I just included them in the mod pack download to save people the trouble of having to configure them. Since your having troubles, try launching the server with only the three files in the mods folder...no extra configs or permissions.
I uploaded the files that are working for me...this is all I started with on a clean install:
If you have any patience left for this mod...maybe you could try these out and see if it helps at all.
Please let me know how it goes!

Mods: CustomNPCs - Crafting Guide - Backpacks

Hi Joel,

Sorry its been awhile! Have you made any progress? The NPCs don’t spawn naturally, you have to create each one. Once you have made once character you can place as many of them in the world as you like. Its a very in-depth mod, the dialogues and quests can take some time to setup. I would suggest starting with some basic characters like a bard or item-giver. SCMowns has made a full tutorial with annotations so you can jump to the part you want to know more about…the movie is over an hour and a half…yup its a big mod. Really makes me appreciate the work it took to build WOH…awesomeness!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xAHirklwArA

The developer also has some instructions on his website:

http://www.kodevelopment.nl/minecraft/customnpcs/dialog

I have yet to find a comprehensive written tutorial, it would take some time to put together…

I also can’t figure out how to make character creation any easier. It would be great if we could edit the files directly instead of having to go through the game interface…If anyone has found anything like this? Maybe just wishful thinking on my part…

For the other mods I made some short videos to explain things…and practice using my headset..be kind, I’m a recording newb!

I have got this working on 1 of our servers, but I cannot for the life of me get it working on a fresh install on a different machine.... GRRRRRR!

I have tried just the mod installs
I have tried the full package including the config files
I am about to try copying the database from the config folder on the working server

But this seems to be very weird, why does it install on one server and not another???

Hmmm....

Nope.... Can't for the life of me get it to work on the fresh install.... WHich is crazy since I installed it on my macbook air only this morning just fine and it is running on our elderly iMac server - just fine...

WHen I add it to the Super duper iMac with i7 processor.... no joy....

WIll have a look again next week!
Hopefully there might be some more info by then too

Thanks for working on it Miaze.... It is great, (if a little slow) on our white iMac server.

Hey Joel,

Forgive me if this is a dumb question, but have you tried simply copying your entire Minecraft folder from the working machine and pasting it to the new one?  Once I get mods working and the settings tweaked, I find that is (by far) the simplest and best way to get things going on another machine.

It is odd that it works on one system but not the other....what errors are you getting? I could take a look if you post the log or maybe some screenshots.
There has been some updates for these mods that might work better, or worse...I am doing some testing now.
I'm also trying to think of a way to make things easier..maybe an installer?. But not everyone wants to use the same mods, so maybe I should split them into smaller packs? I am considering an EduMod website with more information on how to use mods with Edu in a classroom environment. Its not just a matter of installing them, but using them effectively in a learning environment. For example, what new items are added, how do they interact with the Edu blocks, how can teachers use them, what kind of configuration is required, etc.
Suggestions on this would be appreciated!

I'll grab the logs on Monday as I am not in now until Monday.
It is strange as my Macbook Air is running the mods just fine (running on Mavericks), but when I try and run it on the iMac which is the same age as the macbook Air and also running Mavericks, it is crashing...

java.lang.runtimeexception: no sqlite library found

I'll get the detailed logs on Monday...

Creative Mods

Tis the season for creative mods! Last weekend I tried a mod pack out with a small play group ages 9-10. We had so much fun I thought I would share:

MusicCraft

This mod adds musical instruments to the game. Our session was very noisy until the novelty wore off. Then we set up a stage and tried to play some songs. Afterwards everyone scattered to the four winds, but there were spontaneous serenades throughout the session. A Minecraft orchestra or rock band would be really cool! Next time maybe we will play Jingle Bells. :)

All the items are craftable which can be a lesson in itself. To build an instrument you have to craft each component first then combine them on the crafting bench.

One thing to note...key configs. Its recommend to check the options screen and mini-map options to make sure the following keys are not being used: G, B, N, H

Instrument Gui:

Piano, Keyboard, Organ, Cello: Right Click

-Piano Pedals: Hold Shift - elongates notes

-Electric Keyboard Modes: Press Space - toggles through 4 styles

Drum Kit & Xylophone: Right Click with Drumstick

Violin: Right Click with Bow

Guitar: Press G to play

- use within 4 blocks of an amplifier for distortion (if the amp is on)

- Like a real guitar, use keyboard to make chords and num pad plucks the strings. The base guitar and cello are also played this way.

Base Guitar: Press B

Trumpet: Press N

Saxophone: Press H

In multiplayer you can only play instruments on stands, not from inventory.  For example a trumpet from creative inventory held in your hand will not work.

The trumpet stand must be be placed in the world first, then right click on the top part of the stand to pick up the trumpet (and put it back).

More information and download is available from the developers website:
(warning - the site has pop-ups and adfly advertising)

http://musiccraft.neq3.com/index.html

Time to practice my holiday songs,

Have fun!

Just installing the mods without the permissions and the config files (as per Maize's test) to a vanilla installation

I am basically wanting to set up a single Admin user with full access, then several Moderators who can kick, invite and allow towns etc.. then residents then non-residents. etc...

I have copied a permissions.YML file from here http://www.minecraftforum.net/topic/1650110-146-151mytown-aperf-server-protection-and-performance-mods/ , but I don't seem to have full access to all commands....

Hi Joel,

I had the same issue trying to run MyTown with MCEdu 1.6.4 - for whatever reason, it works fine on Windows but crashes the server on OS X.  I spoke with the current developer of MyTown a few weeks back and he hasn't been able to figure out the cause as of yet.

Mr. Mills,

I think I'm stumped with the server crash...the only way I can recreate the error from the log is to launch without the MyTown.lib file in the mods directory. <_>

I have tried this install method on a MacOSX server with mavericks, another OSX server without and also on Windows 7:

  1. Install fresh copy of MinecraftEdu Server
  2. Launch server and generate new world
  3. Save world and stop server
  4. Add 3 mod files to the server/mods directory:
    MyTown-1.6.1.12.jar
    MyTownLib.jar
    forgeperms-1.6.1.5.jar
  5. Launch Server and load saved world

I am using the the 3 files available here: MyTown-Just the Mods.zip

I wish I could offer more support, this mod is great when it works.

For permissions.yml here is an example with the groups you requested:

groups:

  default:

    default: true

    permissions:

    - mytown.cmd

    - mytown.ecmd.home

    - mytown.ecmd.spawn

    - mytown.cmd.spawn

    - mytown.ecmd.sethome

    - mytown.ecmd.homes

    - mytown.ecmd.delhome

    - mytown.cmd.list

    - mytown.cmd.info

    - mytown.cmd.res

    - mytown.cmd.accept

    - mytown.cmd.deny

    - mytown.cmd.leave

    - mytown.cmd.nationinfo

    - mytown.cmd.nationlist

    - mytown.cmd.nationaccept

    - mytown.cmd.nationdeny

    - mytown.cmd.nationleave

  moderator:

    permissions:

    - mytown.cmd

    - mytown.cmd.*

    - mytown.ecmd.home

    - mytown.ecmd.spawn

    - mytown.ecmd.sethome

    - mytown.ecmd.homes

    - mytown.ecmd.delhome

  admin:

    permissions:

    - mytown.*

users:

  teacher:

    group:

    - admin

  student1:

    group:

    - moderator

  student2:

    group:

    - moderator

To use the commands they must be added to the ServerTool/settings/allowedstudentcommands.ini file:

/ch

/g

/tr

/h

/l

/tc

/nc

/home

/sethome

/delhome

/spawn

/t

/town

This permission set allows the moderator to create towns and nations, assign plots, invite and kick, etc. The default user can only set their home and teleport to different town spawns. They can get info about existing towns, accept or deny invitations or leave a town/nation.

If the moderators group is still to “powerful” you can remove the line mytown.cmd.* and add only the permissions you want (like kick, invite, etc.) Let me know if you run into problems or make any headway with launching that server!

Hi Maize,

Love the Mod... It IS WORKING on the old iMac, and I love it...

I will keep trying and trying on the i7 iMac as the extra processing power will reduce dreaded LAG.

You are very very helpful and I really appreciate the support in getting it working.
Going to spend a productive morning trying all solutions again and see if I can get it working.

Happy days...!

And thanks for the permissions settings... I'll try them on the working server too!!.

Going to try and run the mod using a MySQL database hosted on the same machine.

Failing that, i'll wipe the mac, start from scratch on a new build and work on that.
or just wait and see if the mac mini server i requested gets purchased by my work!!! (early christmas present!)

More Creativity

To continue the theme of creative mods, here is a mod that is both useful and fun:

OpenBlocks

This was probably the most popular mod at the weekend session. It allows students to be creative without having to put them in creative mode. OpenBlocks is full of “odd and ends” that make many things easier. There are two videos by Direwolf20 on the Minecraft forum page, the first one goes through all the items in detail and the second highlights the creative elements of the mod.

Minecraft Forum

Website Download

Paint Brushes & Paint Mixer
The paint mixer has a colour picker that works from CMYK values. By adding milk and dye to the machine you can mix any colour of the rainbow. The amount of dye consumed is proportional to the colour made. Mixing a dark colour will use more black (K), making orange uses more yellow than mixing purple, etc. The machine actually shakes the paint can when mixing, just like the real thing!

After a paint can is made it can be placed in the world. Right-click the can with a paint brush to us the colour.

Canvas Blocks & Stencil
Canvas Blocks are made for painting. Stencils can be made at the drawing table then placed on the canvas.

Rotate stencils by holding shift and right-click to create interesting effects. This mod is still in development, right now there is a sketching pencil that is not yet implemented. Freehand drawing may be in the works, perhaps custom stencils as well. The Squeegie can be used to wipe the paint from blocks. The stencils and paint work on vanilla blocks as well as canvas, even glass.

Magic Pencil & Crayons
Draws “imaginary” blocks in the world that can only be seen with the glasses. The pencil draws solid blocks, but the crayon blocks are only solid when wearing the glasses. Rainbow Glasses can see all blocks, but cannot interact with them. BadA** Glasses (“Boss Glasses”) can see and interact with all imaginary blocks.

Imaginary blocks can be created and destroyed in one click making it easy to plan structures and build creatively while in survival mode. Invisible mazes, bridges and secret entrances are some other possibilities.

Of course they can lead to mischief, so establishing ground rules beforehand would be a good idea.  If griefing does become an issue, the crayons can be disabled in the config file. The number of uses is set to 10 by default. Setting it to zero will make them useless even when newly crafted. But that would spoil the fun as they are great for 3D art and can be easily broken if your wearing the right glasses.

Building Guide

Create shapes without typing commands. This block projects a guide that makes building difficult shapes faster and easier.

Right click the sides of the block to adjust the size, shift+ right click the block to cycle through the various templates.

Students can build the shapes themselves but a teacher can also use this mod to generate shapes without using world edit commands. The auto-build feature is triggered by placing an obsidian block on top of the guide (shift+right-click) then right-click the guide block with the material of your choice. Poof! An Igloo!

Other Really Cool Items:

Elevator Blocks
Simple blocks that transport players vertically within a set range (adjustable in the config). Stand on the block and press the spacebar to go up or shift to go down. There are limits to how many blocks it can travel through, by default the maximum is 4. This solves the “Too Many Transporters” problem that can happen in large worlds, also they are easy to craft so students can make their own.

Ladders

The Jaded Ladder solves that “stuck at the top of a ladder with a trap door” problem. This has always been an annoying difficulty...no more! Finally a “climbable” trapdoor! The Rope Ladder is also a great addition. It can be extended down from any height and unlike vines it does not need to be against a solid surface to climb.

Redstone Archery Targets
Targets that emit a redstone signal when hit, accuracy determines the signal strength. They also flip up and down when connected to a circuit - fun way to use XOR gates and repeaters.

Sonic Glasses
Allows the wearer to see sounds. The world appears dark and icons show noises within hearing range. Footsteps are represented by boots, mobs are shown by hearts, actions by their tool icon, etc.

Cartographer
A cute hovering bot that follows you around. If you give it a map module it will create a 3D height map of the area that can be viewed on the map projector.

Holding Tanks

Store fluids for later use or just for decoration. The capacity can be set in the config file, by default each tank holds 16 buckets. Aside from water and lava it can store liquid XP. This makes dispensing experience to players much easier.

Mini-Crane
Crane you wear on your back - control it with a remote to pick up mobs and blocks. Fun for a Crane Mini Game where you grab an item and move it to the prize area

Item Cannon

Works like a dispenser but can blast items over large distances. Aim the cannon with the “cursor” by right-clicking first on the cannon then on the target. It will blast items from a chest placed next to it and can be controlled with a lever.

Used in combination with Vacuum hoppers they are great for homework delivery systems:

(It easy to get carried away with these...:)

Vacuum Hopper
Like a regular hopper but can vacuum up items within close range. Right-click to open the GUI, on the right side of the screen click the box icon. A widow will expand showing the hopper, left click to set the output side, holding right-click and dragging the cube will adjust the viewing angle.

Note: The hang glider does not work in multiplayer but the rest of the items work perfectly.

This mod it both functional and fun - like a big box of toys and some very useful tools!

Enjoy,

Secure Chests with the Carpenter's Blocks Mod

This mod adds locked chests alongs with other great items.

I have been building a website in an effort to organize information and resources for MinecraftEdu. It is an extreme work in progress right now and likely to change, plus the MinecraftEdu Wiki needs some updating too. As a new member of the EduCrew I see there is a lot of work to do! I am going to be posting more tutorials soon, and there is a working Dynmap for my server. Please check out the site and share your ideas.

Hi Maize,

First off, LOVE this thread!! I've found some great mods that my students also love! I just updated to 1.6.4 Build 7, and had some trouble with the mods loading properly. I wanted to start with a vanilla install and use the "Import Mods" feature to put them back one at at time. I'm running into trouble trying to use the "Import Mods from Computer" feature.  I've downloaded your mod packs and client/server mods, and want to point the importer to these files. For some reason, I am unable to select the .zip and .jar files I want to use. They are greyed out and don't let me select it. Is this a Mac thing or a Minecraft EDU thing? I know I can probably just drag each mod into the 1.6.4 folder, I just wanted to use the MC EDU app to do this to be sure it's being done right, as well as to see if it actually works.

Anyone else having this problem?

Hey Joel S,

Just throwing this out there, but are you trying to import through the launcher from Maize's zip? You will of course need to unzip her big file into the smaller individual zip and jar files.

To respond to your original issue though, what specifically is the problem you are having with mods and build 7? Maybe we can troubleshoot that and get to the root of the problem.

One thing that may not have been emphasized with the build 7 release. The mod manager page needs to be attended to before you run the game. Make sure that the mods you are loading are enabled / disabled as you need. By default any mod you add, will be turned on. Keep in mind that some mods don't play with each other.

It is a great idea to add one mod at a time, enable them on the server and the client. Then start the server and client up and make sure all is good. Then add the next one. This is just a way of life with modded games, you have to depend on every Joe out there to get their code to work with every other Joe out there making mods.

Here are some pointers that I have for you and everyone using the mod manager version for the first time:
1. Make sure you have mods checked in Client Page and Server Page...if a mod doesn't have a checkmark beside it, it will not get loaded.
2. Make sure you do not copy and enable client side only mods on the server...you will get server errors.
3. Make sure you only have 1 version of the mod in the folder, you will have issues and conflicts when you have multiple versions of the same mod. Even if they are both for the 1.6.4. I accidentally had two versions of 1.6.4 CustomNPCs and it cause fits on the server.
4. Some mods, have child mods that get turned on when you load them. Some of these will show up in the mod manager some do not.
5. When importing mods from the server tool, make sure you have the proper selection made for client/server/or both.

Hope that helps, I will look back and see if you have posted what the initial error was that you were having.

Thanks, Shane. That's exactly what I've been doing, moving one mod at at time into the server/client mods folder, and then starting the game in both server and client modes. There was some conflict with versions of mods that I downloaded. Is there a difference between the mod files I put on server and client? Or do I just copy the .zip I want to add, and paste the same file in BOTH server and client locations? So far, I've gotten Bibliocraft (v1.5.4) and Custom NPCs (1.6.2) to work.

I unzipped Maize's file with LOTS of mods, and tried to use the Import Mods in EDU Launcher and was not able to select file. I navigated to their location, but could not selection any .zip or .jar files.   So just put them manually into their folders via Finder.

Next is trying ComputerCraftEDU.
The four I had in my previous version was
1. Custom NPC
2. Bibliocraft
3. Biomes O'Plenty
4. ComputerCraftEDU

Are there any other "essential" mods to consider adding?

And can you explain the whole "child mods" concept? Does that mean a folder inside of another folder?

Thanks, as always....

Hey Joel,

The client and server versions should be the exact same....as a matter of fact if they are not, there will be issues.

You can get the latest CustomNPCs tow ork, I use it with mine. It will be listed as 1.6.4.

A good example is ComputerCraftEdu. When you copy the single file into the mods folder, then you load the client you will see it not only loaded ComputerCraftEdu, but also ComputerCraft. I guess child mod is not really accurate, but more a companion mod. Then you have mods like Gallacticraft, that require you not only get the mod, but also 2-3 other mod files with it to make it work.

For your biomes o plenty, use the one in Maize's pack cause I tried all the others after it and it crashes my server. So you have to use that really old version for that to work.

Hi Shane,

Well, I've success with Custom NPCs, BiblioCraft, and ComputerCraft. Biomes O'Plenty is the one giving me trouble now. What version is the one that works? I installed "BiomesOPlenty-universal-1.6.4-1.1.2.51.jar" in both client and server mod folder, and am getting error:

"Forge Mod Loader has found ID mismatches. ID 252 from Mod BIomesOPlenty is missing / ID 253 from Mod BiomesOPlenty is missing. You cannot connect to this server."

Any ideas on how to fix?

Sounds like you don't have it checked off in the mods section of the launcher. Once you start up Minecraft launcher, select mods, then check the client and server to make sure they are checked off.

I just remember using the one from Maize's mod pack.

1.1.2.something.

I don't have it at work, so I cannot check. I have it on my home server in a testing environment first. But I do know that it was working...well at least not giving me errors.

Hello everyone! Sorry I've been out of the loop with intermittent Internet access...soon I will be back though!

Joel S. I'm so glad you and your students are enjoying the mods! It sound like you are having an ID mismatch problem with Biomes of Plenty. You can copy the BOP config file from the server folder and replace the one in the client config folder. This  will ensure all the Ids match.
I have a better fix for this problem which involves a special mod made to address these issues. it is called idfixminus if you want to check it out. I will post with more info about this soon, along with an updated mod pack.
Until then try copying your server config to the clients, that should do it!
Good luck,
Maize

Thanks, Maize and Shane!

I have everything working, and even added Backpack. And I was able to check/uncheck mods when loading the client. Will students have to check/uncheck these boxes when they play, too? For example, if I don't want them to see ComputerCraft will they have to be sure to uncheck this mod themselves before playing? Or can I control what mods clients see with the server tool?

The Mini Map is the only thing left giving me issues. When I copied MiniMap.zip to the client, I got error messages. Is there a particular map mod (that's not too intrusive) that you'd recommend? Do I need it on both client and server?

One more question: After installing and running different mods, I see message saying "A new version not backpacks is available (1.26.29)" and also for Bibliocraft, too (v1.2.1 now available). Do I ignore these or is it worth updating?

Thanks,
Joel

Glad to hear it is all working....

Well, thinking about this, you do not need to disable the student's mods I would think. Since you can just disable the mod on the servertool and they won't be able to utilize those mods on that server.

For example, if I have disabled CCEdu on the server, even if the client loads CCEdu, they won't be able to utilize it, since the server doesn't have it loaded. That would make managing the load easier.

As for the Minimap mod, I use Zan's Minimap (Voxel Minimap) but you can also use Rei's Minimap, they both work great. This mod only goes on the client side.

As for the update warnings, it is up to you if you want to update...keep in mind that it will ask you to update even if the mod version isn't meant for the Minecraft version you are using. So...my only advice...try one at a time..if it breaks..go back.

I try not to update my mods all the time...it would take too much time. I might look once a quarter for updates, and update between quarters...remember if you update a server mod...you have to update all the clients too...So keep that in mind. If you get a working set...just go with it. Worry about updates once a year even isn't so bad.

Hello, Maize!!  All I can say is that you are simply A-Maize-ing!!  I am in awe of everything I just read (the whole thread)!!  I am not at all a computer geek, but passionately want to  be!! After reading all of this, I am so inspired...and intimidated.  Some day, my hope is to be able to go back over this post, read it all AND understand it!!  I am totally a noob and trying to figure out where to start, but obviously this is way out of my league...but I was so entranced by everything you posted, I couldn't stop reading...  I am so excited to have found a woman on this group and being so knowledgeable!!  (no offense, guys!!).

I am still trying to figure out servers and what that all means...  And as for creating, still wondering do I begin it in a flat world or randomly generated one...but then when I get to the randomly generated one, where do I build something?  Yikes...so much to learn!!  I hope there's a post somewhere on here for the "challenged learners" like me....back to looking for it.

Thanx for the inspiration!!

I am guessing that those server.zip and client.zip files need to be unzipped in the server and client folders respectively.

So take the server.zip file and unzip it into the /minecraftedu/servertool/server/mods/1.6.4/ folder

the client.zip needs to be unzipped into the /minecraftedu/minecraff/mods/1.6.4/ folder

also the mytown1.6.zip will also need to be moved to the 1.6.4 folder in both the client and folder if you want to continue to use that mod.

Hi Lisa,
Thank you for the encouragement! Yes this thread is pretty technical, a maize of information. ;)
Please don't forget that a few years ago we were all MCNoobs! Nothing wrong with being new.
I have been away awhile, my Asian Studies degree is only supposed to be part-time, but it frequently takes up all of my time, Ganbaru!
Now its back to Edu...
How did the mod pack install go? I'm prepared to accept all blame.
;p

The Client.zip and Server.zip files on the drive were put together before MCEdu built in the mod installer. The mods in the files are older versions but they should still work with with MCEdu 1.6 Build 6 and 7, probably 8 as well. The zips contain additional folders and instructions, so you have to unzip them and put everything in the right place. Then check the mods in the Launcher to make sure everything matches. I think I should stick to this format since I would like to include additional info with the mods.

I've also been testing updated mod versions with Build 10. Many cool mods don't work anymore, like OpenBlocks and MyTown, see Craig's MyTown post.
 :(

Here is an updated pack that works with MCEdu Build 6 & 7 & 8:
:D
The mod pack 168mb and will add many new tabs to your creative inventory. Be Warned!
I also have put some individual mods on the drive that are known to work with Edu but are no longer available elsewhere.

A-Maize-ing info about the new mods:

TabbyChat

Yes! A Chat History log!!!! All in a tidy text file stored on the client computer. A really useful mod:

The installation is a bit different than usual, but not difficult, just more files to copy. I have tailored a pack for MCEdu with installation instructions:

This mod is version specific, you need the to match the version of the json file in the folder to the MCEdu Build you are using. I can make ones for build 8 and 9 if there is a request :)

TECH ALERT: The following info is not for Noobs but you will be less of a Noob is you read it!

To get this mod to work you have to change the mceduforge.json file.

To edit your own file:

On the client computer go to minecraftedu/minecraft/versions/mceduforge

Copy the original mceduforge.json to a safe place.

Open the file with a text editor - one that does not automatically change formatting. You do NOT want fancy quotes or anything like that...use notepad or a code editor.

Add the following to the end of the arguments section at the beginning of the file:

--tweakClass com.mumfrey.liteloader.launch.LiteLoaderTweaker

Add the following to the top of the library array:

{
                "name": "com.mumfrey:liteloader:1.6.4",
                "url": "http://dl.liteloader.com/versions/"
        },

So the first part of the file will now look like:

{
"minecraftArguments": "--username ${auth_player_name} --session ${auth_session} --version ${version_name} --gameDir ${game_directory} --assetsDir ${game_assets} --tweakClass cpw.mods.fml.common.launcher.FMLTweaker --tweakClass com.mumfrey.liteloader.launch.LiteLoaderTweaker",
"libraries": [
{
                "name": "com.mumfrey:liteloader:1.6.4",
                "url": "http://dl.liteloader.com/versions/"
        },
        {
"name": "com.sk89q:worldedit:5.5.6"
},
{
"name": "minecraftedu:mceduforge:0"
},
{
      "name": "net.minecraft:launchwrapper:1.8",
"comment" : "Important for FML, we add this"
    },

And thats it! Save and close the file then try launching the client. If there is something wrong with the json file, MinecraftEdu will not start (the launcher will, the game will not). I still have to check my file twice sometimes to get it right! <_>

If your client launches successfully but there is no change to the chat, then the required library may not have downloaded automatically. Make sure mumfrey folder is in the right place (its in the TabbyChat.zip on the gdrive along with more instructions)

The mod file itself does not work inside the 1.6.4 folder. You need to put it in the root of the client mods folder.

If you are running Edu 6 or 7 or 10 you don't have to worry about editing anything, just copy 3 items to different folders.

This is probably the most useful utility mod I have found yet! I recommend giving it a try!

OpenBlocks

The misc mods with elevators and other useful bits.

XP Storage Station

The new version does not work with MCEdu (at least I couldn't get it to work...>:(

So here is the version that does:

Bibliocraft

So far the updates are all working nicely, I would like to point out a great feature of this mod.
The Typesetting Table saves written books to a readable file outside of Minecraft.

Just place a signed book on the table, then with any empty hand Shift+Right-Click the book. It will turn from red to blue and the file is now saved in the books folder that can be found in the worlds directory on the server.

The contents are nicely formatted:

Homework
maize
#pgx0
This is a saved book

Printing a book is a little more involved, but its cool to see how Gutenberg did it - Minecraft style!
You may want to remove any homework files from the books folder before allowing access to a printing press.
A button must be placed on the front of the typesetting table to create a printed chase.

Put a empty chase in the centre-top area of the typesetting table.
Available books can be accessed by right-clicking on the top-left corner (wearing reading glasses will show a label overlay). The push the button and a printed chase will appear in the lower-right corner of the table.

Take this chase to the printing press and place it in the middle section (below the ink plate). Add ink to the plate by right-clicking the top area with ink sacs. Put an empty book on the front-left of the press. The printing animation should will begin, a blue printed book will appear on the right! You can stack books on the left to make multiple copies.

Authors can publish and share their work! WOOT!

Carpenter's Blocks adds Slopes and Safes

The new version on the Minecraft Forum works with MCEdu build 10 so it may work with previous versions. Here is a version the works on Build 7 with more chisel textures:

Pam's Harvestcraft

Adds a huge variety of food along with the tools for making healthy meals. To growing the foods requires different kinds of farms; orchards, veggie gardens, grain fields, terraced rice patties, etc.

Fruit trees at the Orchard Pond. Each student has their own space to grow their favourite foods!

I am using it to build activities based on the MyPlate nutrition plan.
The MyPlate system uses proportions to represent serving size. In an MCEdu activity each student can fill their assigned area with food choices from the 5 food groups.

I am using bibliowood tables and plates from bibliocraft but a similar setup could be done without mods using wool blocks and item frames, in fact they hold some items the plates don't.

Links to more info:

I am also adapting some of the suggested lessons, like the 20 Questions Booth at the Orchard

Noppes CustomNPCs mod is awesome for creating educational quests!

-This is an extended pack with more skins and music...so far no issues with saving characters or data.

NBTEdit

This handy mod lets you change the settings of entities and spawners - create custom villager trades or make them invincible.

Movie Props Mods

Decocraft

Props for building Minecraft Movie sets. You can place items that are rotated to match the angle you are facing.

We have Noppes to thank for his help on this one!

Mr. Crayfish Furniture

Functional furniture long with parcels and envelopes that can hold items and be placed in student mailboxes...personal delivery only, the customNPC mailman only delivers virtual mail! ;)

Furniture Mod with Carpenter's Mod Beds

Note: if you want to use the oven or freezer with Pam's Harvestcraft foods you must add the recipes to the cfm.cfg file on the client and server. I'm working on making a config file for this.

Tip: Toggle the display of item IDs in inventory by pressing F3+H

Billund

The "Lego Mod" by dan200 the creator of ComputerCraft.

This mod has small blocks that can be rotated by holding down the shift key. Order forms will summon a special delivery chest full of bricks!

Tinker's Contruct

Adds metals to make custom alloys with a more "realistic" tool-making process.

IDFixMinus

A mod that fixes ID conflicts. If you having trouble getting mods installed or connecting to your Edu Server, try the following:

1. Place the mod on the in the server mods directory and run the server. The mod will sort out the conflicts and generate a idfixminus.txt in the server directory.

2. Copy this file to the client computers minecraftedu/minecraft folder. Copy the mod to the client mods folder.

3. Copy the contents of the config folder on the server to the client computers (if you have server-only mods like MyTown or Dynmap you don't need to copy their configs)

Galacticraft

This mod adds just the right amount of tech, solar panes are wired and oxygen is collected with oxygen pipes. There are villages on the moon and slimming eggs to be found on mars. Did I mention the dune buggy?! WooT!

This is an awesome mod, but has trouble with MCEdu. You cannot blast off and land with the rockets. There is a work-around using the MyTown mod that gives you the ability to teleport directly to the moon or mars. Once there you can setup teleport stations for the students to use.

-install on server and client

-install on server only

Note: You must enable the "Allow Nether & End" setting in the Teacher Menu for any of this to work.

With MyTown installed the regular teleport command will no longer work, a dimension number must be specified first with the format /tp DIM <x> <y> <z>
For example to teleport within the world: /tp 0 288 67 67 where the 0 is the dimension number of the Overworld.

Moon is -28
Mars is -29

If you want to go to the Moon type in the command:

/tp -28 288 67 67

Poof! Your on the moon! A Nether portal will be automatically created near your location, it can transport you back to the Nether or you can remove it. For convenient interplanetary travel you can use MCEdu teleport blocks or a CustomNPC with a Transporter Role (once a steady oxygen supply has been established).

You can go to Mars the same way:

/tp -29 288 67 67

Any co-ordinates will do, but you may want to make sure the "Allow Student Resurfacing" option is checked in the Teacher Menu, just in case you teleport to the middle of Olympus Mons! :)

I think thats it for new mods, the rest are already mentioned in previous posts. Since I'm back now I can answer questions if anyone is having trouble.

Have fun!

Maize, this is incredible!!!  I am so impressed with all you do!! You must be quite the brainiac!! I'm envious!!

The mod pack is awesome!! Makes my kids jealous ; )!!  Although last night, with the help of Shane and Elfie, I managed to get my son on the server and we played together!!  It was awesome!!!  ...yup, that new.  But I plan on becoming a pro!!  Not any time soon, but some day...

They also helped me with putting in the mods - I had no clue.  But somehow, they work!!  Not sure what I did, so I may need a little help installing some of these you showed me.  They look awesome!!  The Tabby Chat I think would be wonderful in a teacher's standpoint.  It will be great to access all of what they say to each other!!  For good and bad!!  I am in 4th grade...I'm sure it will be all good!!  They don't want to chance not playing.  It is very exciting - I will be the first in the whole district to use MC.  It's a big deal apparently. I know it is to me and my students, but the district is making a big deal out of it.  I think it will be great, though, and give the game a positive view.  Maybe I'll get a few teachers to join me!! ; )

As for the mod pack - I really don't know if I did it all correctly, but I have access to the backpacks, bikes (cool!), and items, so I don't know if I am missing anything.
Also, I was using build 9 and they seem to be fine.  I am looking forward to trying some of these mods...  Will it be ok if I contact you for help if needed (let's face it - we both know I will need it...)

YOU need to write a book on all of this!!!  That would be awesome!!!  You have so much knowledge that us noobs could utilize instead of bugging you for such trivial things....  Think about it: in another few years, soooo many teachers will need it!!!

Gosh, this stuff is addicting!!

Thanx so much for your help!!

Lisa

Galacticraft - You have to give yourself permission to use the myTown commands that teleport you between dimensions...sorry I forgot that part! :)

In the server config folder open PermissionsEx.cfg and change this setting to true:
    B:allowOps=true

Then when logged into the server, you have to OP yourself:
/op YourName

Then all the commands will work. My apologies to anyone one who tried and got the "You do not have permission to use this command message"

I should also warn against using the Air Lock Controller blocks, they don't work and throw exemptions all over place. A simple double piston door system is not as high-tech but works better for now...Even with the bugs this mod is still super cool!

Hi Lisa,
Its great that you have a mod pack up and running! I don't think its really a matter of brains, more like the will to learn - which you seem to have in spades!
I'm glad you tried the mod pack though I usually wouldn't recommend it for beginners. I hope you didn't keep the guys up all night!
:)
I have been organizing the mods into smaller packs on my google drive here:

It should be easier now to find just the mod you want (along with any supporting files and instructions) without having to download the entire Mega Pack.
OpenBlocks is on the drive, along some other goodies! I will keep adding more as I find and test them.

I would advise backing up your working minecraftedu folder before adding anything to it. Just copy the whole thing into another directory somewhere, that way if anything goes horribly wrong, you can put the original back without losing anything.
Also save your world (back it up) periodically in case of catastrophic failure!

* I should mention that using CustomNPCs as transports to Galacticraft worlds in not a good idea, stick to MCEdu Teleport Blocks for reliable space travel. <_>

There are great wikis out there for most of the mods plus I am happy to help, just ask! :)

Just since you wrote that last line... :)
I am having trouble with mrCrayfishs mailsystem. Have you gotten this to work with Edu?
I do not quite understand how to use first of all, but here is what I tried.

I put the signed envolope in MY mailbox. At first it would not generate the "thank you message" until I saw that the creative had to be turned off.
But even then I rarely get that message. (Got it once)
So I put the envolpe in MY box, but how do I choose whom to send it to?
If I unlock my box, another player is able to take it from my box, but they are not able to open it.
The same thing if I put it in another players box. They can take it out, but are unable to open it. (showing for just a millisecond)

I would like this use this mod simply because of it's mail feature, so that I can mail my students their reward for the work they have done.
Can you help me? Or pointing me in another direction for how to reward my students without them beeing logged on?

Hi Halligator,

The mailbox in mrCrayfish Furniture functions like a "real" one, you have to deposit the envelopes/parcel to each student's mailbox. Thats what I mean by personal delivery only. Run to each box, in survival shift+right-click to deposit items.

Interacting with the mailboxes takes some getting used to. Jumping in and out of creative mode is easier if you assign the command to a hot-key.

You can open your mailbox by right-clicking (without holding shift) to access the inventory. Anyone can access it (like a chest) if set to "public" (shift+right-click with empty hand). Students own the mailboxes that they have placed and can access them the same way.

I have yet to find a quick deployment system for rewards other than using the CustomNPCs mod. It also has a mailbox that ties into quests, but I don't think you can e-mail diamonds yet...Even though this delivery method takes some "leg work", its great that I can give custom items to each student.

Have fun,
Maize

Hi I am also trying to use Dynmap which I am sure it installed as it should be, the problem is that my server address is no.no.no.no:no which means I cannot use 000.000.000.000:8123 to display the map in a browser, I have been in the config file an altered the port number to the one I have to use for my server (25565) but when I type the address into a browser I get a connection was reset message.

Any advice on how to get this working

Thanks

Hi Daniel,

The dynmap webserver cannot be on the same port as the minecraft server. If your server is running on 25565 then try changing Dynmap server to 25566 or something like that.

You may need to open a port in the security settings of your network (port forwarding), or find a port that is already open. I would suggest talking to your network administrator, they could help you out with this.

You can also run netstat from the command line, it will tell you what ports are open on your computer. Here is more info on how to use this command:  List Open Ports and Listening Services - Tech Republic
(Mac users, use the netstat format for BSD)

For the IP address, if Dynmap is running on an internal network, you can enter localhost:25566 into the web browser to load the page. (localhost:port_number_from_config_file)

It sounds like your system has some extra security, so you will probably need to contact the network admin or whoever has access to the network settings.

Good Luck,
Maize

Hi Maize,

I'm interested in the Harvest Mod for helping students in survival mode to have more options to grow seeds and farm crops. I downloaded a couple of files, and wasn't sure where to put them and whether to copy .zip files or folders.

Do I put the entire folder in my server>mods folder and also on client side mod folder? Or do I choose each .zip and place them individually? A screenshot is included that show the three files I've downloaded. Hopefully you can quickly review what to place where so I can get these up and running on my server and client machines.

Thanks,
Joel S.

Yes, they all can work independently, though Harvestcraft and Get all the Seeds mods work best together. The MC Forum page has a write-up about each mod. To summarize:

Harvestcraft: additional crops from plants and trees

Get all the Seeds: Receive Harvestcraft seeds from clearing grass (just like vanilla wheat seeds), otherwise you place a crop (like tomato) in a crafting bench to get its seeds.

Mob Drop Crops: Adds new plants to the world that produce mob items (like spider eye, ghast tear, etc) This mod was made so you can legitimately obtain these items in peaceful mode (no monsters setting), though I also use this mod with monsters, since not all of my players enjoy hunting skeletons for bonemeal. :)

Melon Spawn: Melons will spawn in the world like pumpkins (instead of having to find the seeds in dungeons)

Extended Glass: Make more with glass - half-blocks, stairs, etc.

Desertcraft: Adds desert related plants and items (like cacti and new armour)

Random Plants: Adds venus fly trap (decorative) that spawns in swamps

Temperate Plants: Adds many new plants that spawn in different biomes

Wee Flowers: Add decorative flowers that can be crafted into dyes (an flowering vines). This mod will also add flowers on the moon if using it with Galacticraft.

All of the mods work well together or separately. Super fun for survival mode!
:)

Hi,

I have a texture pack question. I saw there's a cool world on the sharing site called "Forbidden City" and they recommend adding a texture pack (see below)
It is strongly recommended that you use this custom texture pack which adds authentic details to the world:
http://www.planetminecraft.com/texture_pack/authentic-chinese/download/m...

My question is: Once I download, it creates a folder called "AC v4" do I just place this folder in the mods section of client and server? Is there some other place it should go? Are texture packs treated the same as mods?

thanks,
Joel

No, texture packs (the old name, the new name is resource packs, but people still use the old name) go into the resourcepack folder in your Minecraft folder. You don't have to put it on your server, only your client.

Hi Joel,

You don't need to unzip the file, you can just copy it to the resourcepacks folder on the client computers. In general resource packs do not function the same way as mods. They only change the appearance of the world, not the actual function. A resource pack will make existing items look different, it will not add new items or change how the game functions. Hope that makes sense!

AHA! I didn't realized I had to choose the resource pack once in the game. THANKS!

Are there any favorite texture packs you use that you'd recommend? The Chinese pack that they suggested for Forbidden City is pretty cool. I just wanted to get your recommendations about any others.

You guys are awesome, BTW. Fast, helpful support EVERY time I post!!

FlowsHD.  It is a little realistic and softer smoother colors. A fews blocks are a little too dark but overall I like it. Kids seem to prefer it on certain builds.

There are lots of resource packs to choose from depending on theme and preference. The Minecraft Forums and Planet Minecraft have a huge variety.

To suggest a few:

Sphax PureBDcraft is a very popular "cartoony" pack.

Vattic's Faithful Pack is similar to the original Minecraft textures with double (32x) resolution.

Dokucraft is a popular pack that has a sort of "medieval" theme

One thing to keep in mind is resolution. An HD pack may have beautiful graphics, but it may cause performance issues or require an additional mod for it to run properly. To avoid this I generally stick to either the 16x or 32x resolution version, but if your computers can handle it, the 64x versions are really nice! I'm partial to Soartex Fanver.

If you take a look at the contents of an unzipped resource pack, notice the textures are separate image files. These can be opened and modified with a graphic editor to create your own custom pack. You can also add sound files that will replace the default sounds in Minecraft. This feature is on my list to explore further..but its a long list! ;)

The Minecraft Wiki Resource Pack article has more info on making custom packs, but simply opening (unzipping) an existing pack for reference is a great way to get started.

Good luck,
Maize
