Hello,
Minecraft is usually pretty good at running reasonably well on even the most modest of 'potato' PCs, but many schools are still using what are best described as 'sub-potato' computers!

Optifine is a mod that gives a decent performance increase on these modest PCs, but getting it to run with Forge is challenging (putting it nicely). There are a few tutorials on how it is done, but one of the steps involves editing the Minecraft launcher profile to run JVM arguments, and adding some text lines. The option of adding JVM arguments is not available in the MinecraftEdu launcher. Would it be possible to add this to the MinecraftEdu launcher in a future build, or is anyone aware of how these arguments might be added manually?

Regards
Rob

I know this is not an immediate solution, but when Minecraft 1.8 comes out and Edu gets to that version, the ability for the older 'sub potato' computers you mention to run Minecraft will improve immensely. The team at Mojang have done amazing work at streamlining the code and making things run smoother and it will make it well and truly better for us at the lower end of the computer spectrum in schools.

Now as I said, this is a long term solution, I have not heard of anyone successfully getting Optifine to work with Edu, perhaps for the reasons you describe, however I know the devs are currently worked very hard on getting a stable 1.7.10 build ready for the community.

Elfie.

Hey Rob,

I have seen people add JVM arguments through a simple bat or script launch file. I am sure you could find one somewhere online.

But, if I am reading this right, are you looking for this screen?

Thanks Elfie, I've noticed a decent improvement between 1.6.4 and 1.7.10, but some of the PCs I'm working with still struggle. I've found a couple of posts that suggest creating a batch file with the required JVM arguments, but no luck yet.

Maybe try to do it through the launchersettings.ini file. See if it takes them that way.

Can be found in Minecraftedu\launcher_res
