Hi

My daughter was in a camp this week and I'm trying to get things working for her at home.  I've gone to the computercampedu and downloaded Forge and the mod and I think I followed the install instructions successfully.  However when I start it there is no text displayed on any of the menus.  Screenshot attached.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Thanks

Hi Paul,

Exactly which mod are you talking about? And what camp did she go to?

Hi Matt

She was at a programming camp at MOHAI in Seattle this week.

The mod I downloaded is called ComputerCraftPlusComputerCraftEdu1.74   So, I just think it's called ComputerCraftEdu.  This is the first time I've tried a mod so I hope that's the name.

Thanks!

Yep, that helps.

Does it look like that before you add Forge or the mod?

Use the Forge automatic installer for 1.7.10 to get it installed first. Make sure that Minecraft runs normally (you shouldn't notice a difference except maybe a Forge notification on the splash screen).

Then add the mod to the mod/1.7.10 folder of the Forge version that you just created.

I would normally be more detailed but I am away from my computer. I hope this at least gets you going in the right direction.

Thanks Matt

I think I did all this but I might have downloaded the Forge for 1.8.  I'll try 1.7.10 and see if that changes things.

I did follow the linked instructions from the site so I got Forge installed and launched MineCraft and saw there was a Forge user even though I hadn't put any mods in.  When I launched that user the missing/wrong characters first appeared.  When I picked the normal user (or maybe it's called profile) things worked normally.  I added in the mod thinking that would help but the results were the same.

I'll give the lower version of forge a try.

Thanks!

Well, didn't work.  And for reference when I go to the Forge page and select the Minecraft version the file that gets downloaded is apparently the same version for 1.8 or 1.7.10.  That file is named ComputerCraftPlusComputerCraftEdu1.74.jar

The mod will not work for 1.8. You specifically need a Forge 1.7.10 install in order to run it.

Picture it this way, Forge is the middle-man or translator between the mod and vanilla Minecraft. The mod is speaking the language of 1.7.10 so it needs the 1.7.10 versions of both Forge and Minecraft in order to work properly.

Gotcha.  Well, I totally uninstalled Minecraft and grabbed 1.7.10 and reinstalled Forge for 1.7.10 and still get the crazy characters.  Weird.

I'm a little disappointed that the site where the mod came from doesn't have any sort of support or even contact information--they just point here.  Has anyone tried to contact them or do they monitor this group.  Maybe they when it's not the weekend.  Guess I'll just keep puttering.

If the characters appear when you install Forge then it is a Forge issue, not a ComputerCraftEdu problem, perhaps the best place to look for support it on the Forge forums rather than the ComputerCraftEdu support area.

I would try removing the ComputerCraftEdu mod and see if the funny characters still appear, if they do, look into it is a Forge issue, it looks to me to be a font issue, perhaps Forge is trying to use a font that your computer either doesn't have or that is corrupted on your computer. If the characters go back to normal with no mods and only Forge, then it is a ComputerCraftEdu issue and the developers do check this forum, and they will look into the issue when they get a chance.

This seems to me like a texture pack/font issue
(I'm not a teacher or anything, I just want to help)

Go to the settings menu (bottom left next to the world in a magnifying glass)
Then go to Reasorce Packs (bottom left again here's a picture of the normal settings screen)
If you see more than one option on the right like this hover over the options and a little < arrow should appear, click it (and for all the resorce packs)
then click done see picture
If this doesn't fix it
Download another resorce pack such as Faithful
Then go back to the Resorce packs screen click the Open Resorce Pack Folder as seen on this picture
Then put the file we just downloaded in there, Don't unzip it
Then click done as seen on this image
Then reopen the resorce packs seen on this image
Then click the > arrow on the picture on the left shown here
Then click done as shown here

If you see only one option on the right and none on the left
Download another resorce pack such as Faithful
Then go back to the Resorce packs screen click the Open Resorce Pack Folder as seen on this picture
Then put the file we just downloaded in there, Don't unzip it
Then click done as seen on this image
Then reopen the resorce packs seen on this image
Then click the > arrow on the picture on the left shown here
Then click done as shown here

If you see only one option on the right but one on the left
Then click the > arrow on the picture on the left shown here
Then click done as shown here

Thanks for the tip.  I was wondering if it was something along those lines--a corrupt font file or something.

But, I get the same issue after trying all of this.

And the Forge Forum seems not to have much help.  There is one report of this happening but there really isn't a solution.  There is a comment to change a config\splash.properties file--but I don't have that file.  So, I'm trying to figure that one out.

Thanks

Ah ha!!!  Figured it out.

When I first looked in my config folder the splash.properties file was not there.  But, somehow it showed up and I made the change and things started to work normall!  Hurray!
