So.... How about this:
If I have students create custom minecraft worlds using worldpainter, how can I then merge all of the files the kids come up with (after exporting them each as a separate minecraft maps) together to have one map that contains everyone's work and we can explore everyone's creation at the same time? I tried "merging" them in within worldpainter, but cannot figure it out.
GO!

I want to do that for my classes too. I googled around a bit and found this suggestion on Minecraft Forums
I have not done this yet but will add it to my 'Try This' list for classes.

The suggestion in the forum says to use MCEdit to copy the best parts to a flat world, clean them up a bit then copy them again to a new generated world. There will be a rift or split where McEdit does the paste. Use MCEdit brushes to clean up the rift. A lot of work but could be done. Or just copy and paste it all to a flat world.

If you beat me to it and try this trick, post back here to let us know how it worked out.

You can also use the WorldEdit mod to create schematic files of each student's build then import them all into a new world. Basically this will allow you to make a copy of the things the kids create and then paste them into a new world individually.

I would recommend MCEdit, but am not sure if it works with MinecraftEdu Special Blocks.

There is a way to manage this, but it might be a bit complicated. Have u ever worked with WorldEdit? This is a plugin which is part of the MC-EDU Server. You can select an area and can do different commands. However u need to be Operator (/op) or if u have a plugin like Essentials Group manager u need to be in a group with access to the WorlEdit Commands.

So if you want to merge different parts of maps you can try following thing: (Before I forget it: If you don't understand something - ask me. English is not my native language ;)  )

I)    Select the area you want to have copied in another world. (By default: Use a stick [ID 280])
II)   write: "//expand vert"
III)   Position your character on the corner and stay on the ground floor.
IV)  write //copy
V)  write "//schematic save [FileName]

Now you have a file which contains all the blocks in the copied area. To place the area on another server you need the file in the same directionary where it was saved.

In my case it would be:
"..\minecraftedu\servertool\server\config\worldedit\schematics"

after transferring successfully the file start the server (if u have not already done this)

Go into the world place yourself again on the ground floor and do following thing:

I)  write: "//schematic load [FileName]
II) write: "//paste"

I hope this helps.

Thanks so much for all of the suggestions!  So one thing that I'm trying to do is have kids individually, or in groups if I have to, actually focus on making just the terrain first, without focusing on building on it yet. This is why I was thinking World Painter would work. I could have it in the lab on the computers... the kids make their section of the world, save as a world file, and then I maybe use World Painter to combine all of the terrains. Then whens I in theory have that done, they can then go in and build.
I'm having trouble envisioning using MCEdit for this sort of approach. Does this make sense?  We only have one server here at my district at the moment and I want to try and keep from having 25 kids all in the same world at the same time hackin things up.
Have any of you used World Painter?
Thanks so Much!
