LotsOMobs adds giraffes, penguins, pterosaurs and more! Animals spawn in their natural habitats, some are useful and others are dangerous. This mod brings lots more life to Minecraft.
Oh, give me a home where the Buffalo roam
Where the Deer and the Antelope play;
Where seldom is heard a discouraging word,
And the skies are not cloudy all day.
- from "My Western Home" by Dr. Brewster M. Higley, 1873
This mod has a simple approach to animals. The models are "blocky" and their behavior is similar to vanilla mobs. Configuration is uncomplicated and perhaps unnecessary since the animals do not spawn in great numbers. LotOMods has is a nice variety of everything but not an overwhelming amount of features or creatures.
Simplicity does not make this mod any less interesting. New weapons and armour, new foods and of course lots of animals, even a flying dinosaur! There are also two dimensions, the Ice Age and dinosaur era that can be accessed through portals or with a time traveling device. These portable items are very handy when escaping from a T-Rex!
Many animals are tamable, some can be ridden but the focus is mainly on variety (biodiversity ;p). From butterflies to elephants, this mod currently adds over 45 different animals.
They fit well with vanilla mobs and follow the same "Minecrafty" rules.
How to train your Triceratops:
Gazelles can be tamed with wheat, they are fast and great for scaling mountains. Camels and pterosaurs can also be ridden but are not tamable. They are difficult to steer, but riding a flying dino is awesome! :D
There is also some simple farming and processing. Goats can be sheared for angora wool. This wool can turned into rope with a spinning wheel.
Rope is used to make a salt bath and tanning rack. These items prepare hides that can be crafted into armour.
The special armour is very stylish! ;p
LotsOMobs is frequently compared to Mo'Creatures, the most famous of the animal mods. It is one of my favorite mods for singleplayer but can cause massive server lag in multiplayer. Extensive configuration is needed to avoid being overrun with creatures. There are many monsters and fantasy mobs in Mo'Creatures as well, which is fun for adventure, but a bit over-kill if you just wanted to spice up the savanna. Are fairy horses really necessary for a lesson on the Ice Age? This mod adds so much, you may find yourself disabling most of it. However, it is A LOT of fun riding around on various creatures searching for snakes for a serpentarium. ;p There is great opportunity for animal farms; dolphin breeding, elephant rearing, ostrich racing...If these are the kinds of activities you want to do then it is definitely worth editing some config files for Mo'Creatures.
Check out Mo'Creatures Website
If your looking to get deeper into dinos, there are two other mods that go further with paleontology and archeology:
Jurrasicraft adds all the dinosaurs from the movie and more. TheLarsinator, developer of LotsOMobs, is also a contributor to this mod. I haven't tried it yet but I'm looking forward to it! The dinos have more detailed models and advanced behavior, though LotsOMobs is still the only mod with a flying dino. :)
LotsOMods Brontosaurus - we used to think it was a real dino:
Jurrasicraft Dinos - just like the movie:

Fossils and Archeology Revival is another great dinosaur mod, this one has a lot more science to go with all the giant lizards. I have used this mod with version 1.6.4 and it works great on MinecraftEdu. The process of hatching your own creature is more involved and ultimately more rewarding. When playing this mod much time is spent researching and building the best habitat for your ancient creatures. There are all kinds of dinosaurs along with animals from the Ice Age, there are ancient ruins to discover and laboratories to build. This mod has a great balance between science and adventure. Over the summer I helped create an epic dinosaur zoo on our community server (contact me if your interested in accessing the private Technic modpack). Everyone had a great time and learned a lot - more info about the project and this mod is coming soon...

Configuring mods usually involves editing text files, but in 1.7.10 mod settings can be changed in the options screen. This works for client side changes, then the config file can be copied to the server.
Access Mod Options from the main screen:
Find the mod you want to configure in the list on the left, then click the config button:
Available options for the mod will be displayed:
Changes settings, note the name and location of the config file at the top of the screen:
Setting mod options in-game will change the values in the config file on the client, though you can still open and edit the config file directly if you want.
For the new settings to take effect in multiplayer, copy the config file from the client and replace the old file on the server:
It's generally a good idea to make sure your config files are the same on both the client and server to avoid weird problems.
Many mods now have configuration options available in-game, though most changes require a restart, this is much easier than editing text files!
Adding more animals to the the game makes things much more lively and creates even more opportunity for learning across subjects. The Ice Age becomes much more memorable when you meet a mammoth. Interest fostered in the Minecraft world is quickly transferred to the real one. While playing this mod with some young people I have been asked things like: Is a giraffe really that tall??? (and so blocky!! LOL!) Do real whales sound like that? Are penguins that noisy? Where do antelopes live anyway? LotsOMods adds more fauna to go with the Minecraft flora and more questions soon follow! :D

Extended Farming
I had one little Minecrafter come for the T-Rex but stay for the tractors!
