We have really been enjoying Minecraft Edu for 3 years now and I am looking to get my class into modding with Tynker, our school has Minecraft Edu version 1.7.10 build 20. Today I decided to try things out.  I have a Mojang account so I  logged onto my Minecraft account, added the Tynker server but it states "Outdated Client!" So do I have to install a completely separate version of Minecraft on my machine to connect to Tynker?  Does this also mean all of my students would require their own separate version as well on all our machines? Or is there another way? Thanks for your help.

I would be very surprised if you could get McEdu working with Tynker.

Your MinecraftEdu license entitles you to a gift code to install the full regular retail Minecraft software with a regular Mojang account.  That is probably your best option if you want to leverage your investment in MinecraftEdu for use with Tynker.

Hi Outpost,
You need to use normal unmodded Minecraft that is updated to the latest version. It won't work with MinecraftEdu because you need to connect to Tynker's servers. Each student needs to have their own distinct Minecraft account. Like Pat says you could leverage your gift codes but this would only get you so far if you were doing this with more than one class.
I used it this summer for a camp and it worked great, but the packages are far too cost restrictive for me to use in school. Last I checked it was $27 per child for a 3-month Tynker plan + $27 (coincidentally) per Minecraft account. $54 per kid is impossible.

Thanks for your responses, we sent an email to teacher gaming about those gift codes and here was the reply

Hi Kevin,
Unfortunately the gift codes that were offered as a bonus gift when purchasing MinecraftEdu are no longer available. We kept them available for two months after the sales of MinecraftEdu ended, but as we were no longer a part of Minecraft in Education, we had to move forward and couldn't legally get and distribute the gift codes any longer.
The problem with them was that they were not a product like MinecraftEdu licenses were, they were something TeacherGaming LLC chose to offer as a bonus, but now as Microsoft owns the rights for MinecraftEdu, they have no legal obligation to offer the gift codes.
I am very sorry for any inconvenience this may cause, but there is nothing we can do to help with the gift codes at this point.
Please do not hesitate to contact us if there is anything else we can do for you.
Thank you for your understanding!

So gift codes are a not go, we have 30 seats for out Tynker account I guess I would have to figure out a way to get funds to get 30 regular Minecraft versions onto our laptops.  At $35 a pop here in Canada its not cheap.  I also emailed Microsoft and they will not support any mods. Too bad we have Minecraft Edu and cannot link it to Tynker.  My kids here would love to make that happen, it would be amazing.  Thanks for your help and suggestions, really appreciate it.

Keep in mind that Tynker doesn't work as "seats" either but as accounts for individual students.
