It's February and the new themes are up for our 12's challenge, I will be attempting all 6 themes this month. First up is the theme Water drops/ Water splash. It's always fun doing this type of photography, although I wish I had a flash trigger.
During the winter months, the sky and sunsets near the Sacramento Wildlife Preserve can be spectacular.
I have learned the hard way to wait until it is absolutely dark before leaving a sunset. There is nothing worse than seeing the sky flare brilliantly as you are driving away. And, frequently your camera can catch more in subtle tones and colors than the eye can see and especially in the reflections in a body of water.
The small boat harbor in Los Angeles has very calm waters and I loved the way the reflections of the masts wiggled. Water takes many shapes and forms depending on the motion, the speed, and what is on the surface. Finding the patterns and squiggles is almost hypnotic.
Even in the desert areas of Arizona near Sedona, you can find teacups of water that may reflect the lovely scenery. Whenever I see a water puddle, I always walk around to see if I can find a photogenic reflection.
Slow wave ripples taken from a ferry going from Port Angeles, WA to Victoria, BC. We had stopped and were just waiting for a large ocean liner to move out of the channel. The water was very calm and the sky was overcast.
Another popular way to photograph water is at a waterfall. We have all seen those wonderfully romantic, soft water waterfalls. To get really great shots, you need to have good depth of field (about F-8 or smaller) and a slow shutter speed (about 1/30 or slower depending on how fast the water is moving). You may need to adjust your ISO to get those settings and have to bracket and check to make sure you are getting just the right amount of softness.
Oceans on stormy or windy days can be fascinating. I like using my long lens to capture
the spray, the foam along the shore and the reflection in the sand as the water retreats.
Just as the wave is rolling over it can become translucent and that is lovely too.
This was a beautiful tropical leaf that I found in a botanical garden. The colors were quite
striking, but following a soft rain, it was the tiny, sparkling drops of water that attracted me.

"Water Drop" is a musical theme composed by Hans Zimmer for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. It appears as track thirty-nine of track listing one on the film's complete soundtrack at 2:04 in total length.
The track consists of two full statements of the theme from "On Stranger Tides", followed by a short coda. The first statement is delicate and mysterious, accompanied by an arpeggio pattern and tribal wind instruments. The second statement is accompanied by a driving bassline and male choir and is altogether more powerful. The track ends with Blackbeard's six note figure.

Famous dogs, like former U.S. President's dog Bo, or the Disney classic dog, Red, or Blue from Blue's Clues, are all famous dogs in pop culture with names that mean water. Some are subtle, like Bo, which means wave. Red may refer to the Red Sea or Blue as the perceived color of water, though it is really transparent. However, when it comes to pop culture icons bearing a water-themed name, none stands taller than Ren Hoek, the asthmatic Chihuahua from the 1990s cartoon show, Ren and Stimpy.
The Ren and Stimpy show was one of the first three cartoon shows on Nickelodeon during the channel's debut of Nicktoons, alongside Doug and Rugrats. The show plays a pivotal one as it first introduced adult themes into children's programming and helped inspire adult-themed cartoon shows such as South Park on Comedy Central and Beavis and Butthead on MTV. However, the Ren and Stimpy show was not intended for the adult audience. As Nickelodeon grew in popularity, executive management deemed the show too controversial for young viewers and canceled it.
Ren, which is a water-themed name, means water lily. The water little is a lovely flower that grows in the water; however, Ren the dog is probably the farthest thing from a lovely little water lily. Ren, from Ren and Stimpy, is an emotionally unstable Chihuahua who often resorts to violence against his dim-witted cat friend, Stimpy. The choice of the Chihuahua breed partly relates to that dog's sometimes short, feisty temper but the creator of Ren got his inspiration for the character in a pop culture photograph. Creator John Kricfalusi saw a photograph of a Chihuahua in a sweater and remarked that it appeared like a "psychotic-looking monster in a cute sweater." Kricfalusi also felt that such a small breed should not usually inspire such ferociousness as Ren so plainly has in the show. It is pretty clear from the creator's perspective on Ren that this character's name was not inspired by the beauty of a water lily. Nonetheless, Ren is a water-themed moniker that dog owners may choose. The impact that Ren the ferocious and emotionally unstable Chihuahua has had on pop culture and subsequent cartoon programming since the 1990s is also undeniable.
Our theme this week is Water Droplets. This week, we want you to think about how you can shoot Water Droplets within your photographs. Can you take a shot where the water droplets are sitting perfectly on a leaf? Or maybe you could try to capture water droplets on an animals fur?
