The Hawn Foundation is pleased to announce two days of professional
development opportunities for educators and school leaders and those
individuals interested in the social and emotional development of
children and young people. This two-day workshop will be held at
Colorado Mountain College, Aspen, Colorado on 19-20 May 2012. As a co-
sponsor of the Workshop, Colorado Mountain College is offering a CEU
option for registrants. A leader in innovative education and practice,
Colorado Mountain College is collaborating with The Hawn Foundation to
bring MindUP to the Roaring Fork Valley and Colorado.
The MindUP program is the signature educational initiative of The Hawn
Foundation. MindUP is anchored in current research in cognitive
neuroscience, neurophysiology, evidence-based classroom pedagogies,
best-practices mindful education, percepts of social and emotional
learning, and guiding principles of positive psychology. MindUP is a
family of social, emotional, and attentional self-regulating
strategies and skills developed for pre-kindergarten through eighth
grade to cultivate wellbeing and emotional balance. Among the various
MindUP skills taught to students, focused attention and nonreactive
monitoring of experience from moment to moment display the potential
to have a long-term impact on brain function and social and emotional
behavior by promoting happiness, resiliency, optimsim, and self-
awareness. MindUP lessons fit easily into any school schedule and can
be implemented in a variety of contexts. Classroom management tips and
content-based activities are also provided to assist educators in
using MindUP throughout their schools.
You may register separately for Session 1 (Saturday) and Session II
(Sunday), or sign up for both Sessions I and II.
Theoretical and pedagogical foundations of MindUP will be explored
during Session I on Saturday, May 19th. Practical, hands-on
implementation strategies and MindUP lessons will be experienced in
grade-level breakout sessions. Participants in our MindUP workshop can
expect to:
Learn how to implement MindUP in the classroom;
Become familiar with the theoretical and pedagogical foundations
of MindUP;
Experience first-hand the MindUP curriculum through interactive
learning;
Develop an acquaintance with how MindUP supports children's
acquisition of skills to recognize and manage emotions, develop
concern for others, make responsible decisions, and maintain positive
relationships;
Learn how to integrate the principles and concepts of MindUP into
standards-based or core curricula;
Evaluate and manage the efficacy of MindUP;
Explore a variety of topics and issues ofcused on SEL, mindful
education, and The MindUP Curriculum.
In Session II of the workshop is designed for people who have already
attended an introductory MindUP Workshop and/or are already
implementing the program in their school or classroom. In this
Session, participants will be given the opportunity to:
Delve deeper into a variety of topics and issues focused on SEL,
mindful education, and the neuroscience of learning as it relates to
The MindUP Curriculum;
Develop strategies for implementing innovative programs in
schools;
Evaluate and manage the efficacy of MindUP;
Begin to develop the skills and acquire the tools needed to
conduct on-site MindUP Teacher Training workshops in a "brain-
friendly" fashion;
Engage in multi-faceted, interactive ways to facilitate learning
and understanding.
The Hawn Foundation encourages all skilled, conscientious, dynamic
educators with experience implementing MindUP in their own classrooms
and who ascribe to our mission to apply to become a MindUP trainer. We
prefer that MindUP trainers are experienced classroom teachers who
have implemented and practiced MindUP with students for at least one
year, although certain exceptions can be made. Regardless,
prospective MindUP trainers are required to attend a MindUP Regional
Workshop sponsored by The Hawn Foundation.
