Theengine displaced 4.5 L (4,477 cc) with a bore and stroke measuring 100 mm 95 mm (3.94 in 3.74 in), respectively and a 9.0:1 compression ratio; the head used Toyota's narrow-angle overhead camshafts for better fuel economy.[1] The 1FZ had only two variants available: the 1FZ-F and the 1FZ-FE. The only significant difference between the two was the inclusion of electronic fuel injection on the 1FZ-FE, whereas the 1FZ-F used a carburetor.[2]

I have a 1996 Landcruiser with a 1FZ-FE 4.5 litre DOHC enging, the problem that I am having is that it is severley heavy on fuel. I do alot of towing, nothing big, and am getting 23L/100Kms. OUCH I am going broke, it gets over serviced, full filter change every 5000kms. just put full new exhaust system on with extractors, due to a collapsed CAT converter, I have 2 hyclones in it, new plugs, leads, cleaned the airflow meter and throttle body. ???????

The 1zf-fe engine is terrific, especially compared to the old 4.2. They're not bad on the highways but the moment you hit town though, it drinks! It comes down to it being a heavy vehicle, especially if you've got the auto. Your obviously changing filters and keeping it in good tune, the only other suggestion I can make is to switch to a K&N air filter, alot of 4wd's get good results switching to one of these. Together with the extractors this should give you an improvement Rusty.

the K&N filter is about all I havent done. I did a lot of research on google over the weekend and i keep coming up with the same outcome, and that is that they are heavy on fuel and there is nothing that can be done about it.

If you are here, you know what these are for. Most serious engine rebuilder will use one of these plate when boring a block. It is easy to see if a block has been honed with or without a plate just by out of round the bore can get once everything is torqued down. These plate simulate the stress of a fully torqued head when doing the cylinder bore honing. I make a lot of torque plate for different engine and got asked to do the Toyota 1FZ-FE torque plate. I now stock these from now on!

With a good tune, your fuel economy should get better. Dyno testing before an aftermarket ECU is fitted to your car will give an indication of how rich/lean your engine is running. From these results, your tuner will be able to inform you of the potential fuel savings to be had.
