When I first thought of a zombie topic,  it was a dead air filler. One of the things I found out there is  an islamic  cult that actual strive to reach a spiritual zombie state ..commonly known  as  the  whirling  dervish.
And I thought the idea of a spiritual zombie to be an original idea. Goes to show just how little I know. My original  thought was that there are what appear to be spiritual  zombies mindlessly  following religious teachings without questioning  the dogma and doctrine. Not to say anything about teachings.

Wonder if it will fair better this time?

Allan , those of us irrespective of religion or clime , who follow someone or something without conscious effort to understand the dogma and act as if taken along by the current of extremism are Zombies. But those who apply their mind to understand things and then act with resolve and determination to do what they understand to be right are really free as can be. Such extremists who consider themselves to be free and yet act contrary to humanity are not zombies but butchers and need to be exterminated.

To the point, RP! Let's see if we can manage to cut the rope of zombie entanglement between Allan and Neil and their fears, delusions, shadows etc., okay?
My theory is that Neil does not dare to say NO to Allan's Zombie messages because he feels he needs to protect him from the typical American minds eye killing tradition, which really is scary. So what has history planned for the two that could help them in the here and now?

Exteimist definitely  would fit into the zombie category of religious people. There also those that study hard memorizing religious documents and selected passage having no real compension following  the D&D without questioning  the value or truth.
The other  problem of those that act to follow  ethics of humanity  committing  rape and enslavement  of others..  The question  is do you want to become like them by responding in the same manner?

There is indeed a killing tradition here Gabby.  I hover regularly over the Milgram electric moderation control button left in my care, always lacking the courage to send you to the eternal moderation of another.  This is a daily routine here at Planet of the Apes Central.  The idea of pulling the thorn from the lions foot is not about then sticking it where it really hurts.  I sometimes think your days with Uncle Screwtape gave you the wrong ideas.

The Zombie notion is dealt with rather well in Mein Kampf, the real bible of modern entertainment, politics and newsrooms.  The 'masses', a term one might take as meaning 'everyone except Gabby' forget everything, are confused by multi-faceted argument and need to be fed fairy tales and repeated slogans to keep them on the same correct page.  One sorts out a focus, vilified in caricature, for hatred - here roped together old men referred to as 'Zombies' - before making everyone in the way of the ego that must be, the enemy, including, as with the Wahabi Berber warriors in Saudi, those who have done the ego's initial killing.  Anyway, the story has long paled.  I can love you, poison and all.  And Allan owns the coffee machine,

Allan is probably wrong on the Whirling Dervishes.  I did see a performance once, with a Jewish woman who thought I was a gift from god.  Nice chaps, though I would have preferred to watch women.  We had a drink afterwards, once no authorities were watching.  Yemen uses 40% of its water growing the 'herb of the prophet' (have we tapped this market Chris?).  Sufis do a lot of stuff in pursuit of religious moments of experience.  Francis Bacon and Ernst Mach were similar experimenters.  I often find what I feel people are doing to each other in company as so distressing I have to drink to stay with the experiment.  The Zombie stage seems to be reached early, before lips taste the amber nectar or pinot noir gifts from god.

The Zombie might be a good metaphor for management development.  Put under training and therapy, it recovers and gains new strength - to be an even better Zombie back in the workplace.  Of course, many mental patients recover in therapy, only to relapse once back amongst normal zombies.  I have forgotten the Lord's Prayer, National Anthem and school hymn.  They come back to me amongst zombies, a bit like the 12 times table, or at least I can hum along.

My own theory is that zombies are kept in most individuals under a thin skim of 'education', waiting to be broken out when needed by the Establishment as soldiers, voters, workers, prostitutes ... Tony's recent link to Wax Taylor shows a lot of what I mean.

Think you've missed the point on this one completely, Allan. The Sufi are the ones who practice the whirling meditation to achieve a particular state of consciousness. Nothing to do with zombies, extremism or terrorism. Jeesh. Sufism is the mystical tradition of Islam. Some of their teachings are real jewels.

When I first ran the zombie topic a long time ago. Some where I read the induced state was a zombie like state of concousness induced by the whirling.
I could have read it wrong or remember it wrong.
What I do remember a reference to zombie  like state connected with the whirling dervish.   It is one of the islamic sects  I do believe it refers to the sufi,  I never continued due to lack  of interest.  I was surprised that sufi was an islamic sect.
Lost interest  a long time ago.

Zombies?  Has someone dragged me back into undergraduate teaching while I wasn't looking?  This implies a metacognitive deficiency in self-correction by evidence.  What advantages does this have in evolutionary terms?  One would guess none though this seems contradicted by shuffling groups of students passing in and out of university gates of excellence to join the Ant Tribe at a subsistence level just below student loan repayment.
